This is a songfic to the song, "When I'm Gone" by 3 Doors Down.

Disclaimer: I don't own the song, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or any of the characters in it. But I do own crackers! This is my first angst, actually first fic. Oh yeah, and the name has nothing to do with the fic - I just thought it had a neat ring to it.

Ryou sat on his bed, thinking. (Why cant I break free? What did I do to deserve this?) He felt like he was in chains. (I think my father meant to do this to me….. But why?) He felt so alone. He knew that he, Malik and Yuugi had Yamis. But their Yamis didn't treat them like dirt…. Especially Yuugi's. Ryou knew Yuugi's Yami treated him very well and didn't possess him. He remembered the day that Bakura had decided to go on a killing spree, and let Ryou watch the whole thing. Ryou would never forget it. Not ever.

Somewhere in this darkness

There's a light that I can't find

Maybe it's too far away...

Maybe I'm just blind...

He was blind. And he knew it. He couldn't find the way out, couldn't do it. But he still knew that he should tame his Yami. He knew the Pharaoh and the Tomb Keeper had been tamed by their hikaris, so much that they would go into bed with them and fuck each other till they had no energy left. But Ryou couldn't have a relationship with Bakura. The tomb robber was too violent, too sadistic for poor Ryou.

Maybe I'm just blind...

He was alone in the world, never able to find what he was looking for, whatever it was. He needed a reason to live, because he had none. He had no one. He knew he would never be part of Yuugi's inner posse, because they were all open with each other. He couldn't be. He had to keep his feelings bottled inside, and he couldn't do anything about it. He couldn't discard the Ring, because he knew it would come back.

He was hoping someone would come kill him. So he could be free…

He got up slowly, knowing exactly what he was about to do.

When your education x-ray

He walked to the kitchen, and studied the knife block. (I have to do this. I don't want to, but I have to…. I just want it to stop… hopefully he cant go after anyone else when I'm gone….)

He selected the butcher knife, and held the blade between two fingers. He drew it across his thumb to test the sharpness. It cut him at the lightest touch. (Too dull…) He grabbed the knife sharpener and drew the blade across it. He tossed a sheet of paper in the air and drew the knife down upon it. (Sharp enough.) He took out a pad of paper and wrote a list of his few personal belongings, not things that his father had given him for the house. He put in hyphens, and wrote the name of a friend beside the hyphen.

Maybe I'm just blind...

The list read:

Money - Jonouchi, for his sister and himself,

Car - Honda, for picking up the chicks,

DVDs and DVD player - Anzu, for your collection,

All of the rest - Yuugi and Jii-san, I hope you find these useful to you in some way.

It was his will. He walked to the door, and unlocked it, so when his friends came to call, they would find him there.

He remembered the faces of his friends. They would have always been there for him, but not anymore. It wasn't possible. He was just made to be a loner, and nothing he did could change that.
