Chapter One: Joey's Challenge

Beep!

Beep!

Thirteen-year-old Yugi Mutou groaned and pushed the sleep button on his alarm clock. He buried his face in his pillow.

The last thing he wanted to do is go to school, but he had to. It was the first day, not only that but the first day of high school.

Domino High School

That's where he had to be in about forty-five minutes.

"Yugi!" said his grandfather, Solomon Mutou, "Are you up yet?"

"Almost, Grampa." Yugi said and pulled himself out of bed.

He quickly up on his school uniform which consists of a white undershirt, blue pants and blue over shirt. He ran down the stairs where his grandfather was making breakfast.

"So you're finally up," Solomon started and noticed the look on Yugi's face, "I'm sure this year will be a lot better then the last."

"I hope so," Yugi said and sat down at the table.

Solomon put a plate of pancakes in front of his grandson. "Cheer up, I've got a surprise for you."

Yugi looked at him, curious, "What?"

"Wait until after school." His grandfather said in a sing song voice.

Yugi finished his pancakes and grabbed his backpack. As he walked out of his grandfather's shop (They lived behind the card shop. They specialized in Duel Monsters of course.) As he walked to his new school, he thought that perhaps this year might be better then the last.

~~~
Yugi had purposely gotten to school early in order to get his locker and class a soon as he could. The sooner he got to class where a teacher was, the less likely he would get beaten up.
Yugi choose a seat close to a window. He figured he would stare out the window more then he would talk to anyone.
"Hey, Yugi," said a voice.
Yugi gave a small smile, "Hey Téa."
Téa Gardner was one of the few people who were nice to him. But then again, she was nice to pretty much everybody. They didn't ever hang out, her best friends Joey Wheeler and Tristan Taylor didn't seem to like him very much. They weren't as bad as some of the people were, but still…
"So, did you have a nice summer?" Téa asked.
"I guess." Yugi answered. "What about you?"
She shrugged, "Mostly boring, but it is fun to watch Joey and Tristan fight."
Yugi smiled again. He'd seen Joey and Tristan fight. Fighting each other consists of the two of them arguing and maybe throwing a punch.
Another kid walked in. He had longish white hair and brown eyes. Yugi didn't recognize him.
Téa didn't smiled a the new kid, "Hey, I'm Téa, and that's Yugi."
The boy sat down a few seats down from Yugi, "Ryou Bakura." He said softly. "Nice to meet you."
Before they could say anything else, Joey walked in with his deck in his left hand. "Yes! I got here early! Come on Téa lets duel! I'm going to beat you this time!"
Téa grinned, "Okay." She and Joey took two desks and set them together and they both shuffled their decks.
Ryou and Yugi looked on with interest. Considering that Yugi's grandfather owned a card shop, Yugi knew a lot about Duel Monsters. He was pretty good, too.
"I play Shinning Friendship in attack mode and place two cards face down. It's your turn Joey."
Joey drew a card, "Ah Ha! I play Celtic Guardian in attack mode. And I'll attack your monster card."
Téa flipped over on of her face down cards; "I play Malevolent Nuzzler, which adds 700 attack points to my Shinning Friendship, making it 2000 attack points. That's 600 hundred points off you."
"My turn," Téa said, drawing a card. "I'll play Fairy's Gift in attack mode and add Silver Bow and Arrow to my Shining Friendship, which raises it attack points to 2300 and its defense to 1400. I'll attack your face down card with my Shining Friendship."
"Lucky move," Joey said, putting his Giant Solider of Stone in his graveyard. He drew a card, "I'll play Flame Swordsman in attack mode, and attack your Fairy's Gift."
"I'll activate my trap, Waboku, which takes your attack points down to zero when you attack me." She drew a card while Joey grumbled. "I'll play another card face down, and I'll attack your Flame Swordsman with my shining friendship."
Téa's pretty good, but Joey only plays monster cards. Yugi thought and watched the duel as it continued.
Joey drew another card; "I'll play this card face down in defense mode."
"I'll play Stop defense," Téa said.
Joey sighed and put The Unhappy Maiden in attack mode.
"I'll attack your Unhappy Maiden and I win!" Téa said happily.
Joey put together his deck. "I'll beat you, yet."
By the end of the duel several kids were in the classroom and most of them were watching to duel.
"You couldn't beat a monkey, Joey," said a kid.
"I could too!" Joey said, "I'll duel anyone in here who is brave enough."
"Do you think that's such a good idea?" Téa asked.
"Like you haven't humiliated yourself enough already," Tristan said, walking up to them.
"Besides," Téa said, class starts in five minutes, that's not long enough to have a duel.
"It is when you're dueling Joey." Tristan chirped.
Joey stood up on his desk; "I challenge anyone who's brave enough to duel me at lunch!"
"Mr. Wheeler, get off that desk." Said the teacher, Mr. Yugmi.
Joey blushed and sunk down into his seat.
"As you all should know, this is your homeroom class. You should be here every morning at 7:30 on the dot. I do not tolerate tardiness. If your late and don't have an excuse, expect a detention." The teacher said walking up to the front of the room.
Mr. Yugmi set his briefcase on his desk and pulled out an attendance record. "I don't know most of you, please say `here' when I call your name"
Yugi began to stare out the window, waiting for the teacher to call his name.
"Bakura, Ryou."
"Here."
"Fort, Amy."
"Here."
"Gardner, Téa."
And so it went on until he got to Yugi. "Mutou, Yugi."
"Here."
The teacher paused for a moment, "Where have I heard that before? Are you related to Solomon Mutou?"
Yugi nodded, "He's my grandfather."
For the first time, Yugmi smiled, "I've know your grandfather for a long time. I'm glad to have his grandson in my class."
As Yugmi continued, a kid whispered "teachers pet."
Yugi blushed and pretended to ignore everyone.
Good year, huh? Yugi thought sarcastically, Yeah right.
