Chapter One
Ordinary Day
Yusuke Urameshi sauntered out of the room frustrated, “Keiko will you please take care of this?”
“No, you have to learn sometime, and besides you hardly get to see her as it is.”
“But Keiko...”
“Don't you 'but Keiko,' me it's you're turn to take care of her.”
“I'm not the one that decided to have the kid why do I have go do this anyway.”
“Because, I need to do some shopping and you have to spend time with her.”
“Whatever,” he grumbled, knowing he would never win this fight. He stomped back into the room knowing that, as usual, Keiko knew best. He had come to accept that in the fourteen years that they had been married.
In the other room, Keiko smiled, she knew her Yusuke loved their little Saki as much as he loved her, but he hadn't really admitted to loving her until he decided to just give up and propose when he found out that she was carrying his child. He had said that he'd be damed if he let his kid grow up without a father like he had. He just needed a little persuasion when it came to being fatherly in public.
While she was thinking about this, her husband was in their bedroom grumbling and searching through clothes. He was only looking for something to drop off his daughter in, but he wanted to look as cool as possible, in case anyone he knew could see him. He stumbled over his old school uniform and paused. He grabbed the coat and threw it over the black slacks and black wife-beater he was wearing, slicked back his hair and grabbed his keys.
“Saki, lets get going,” he called as he went to give his wife a kiss goodbye.
“Coming, papa,” called a voice from down the hall. Saki Urameshi was as stubborn as her father, but had her mother's personality. She also had her father's eyes, her mother's smile and her father's little seen goofy side. The thirteen-year old rushed down the hall having got up late for her first day of school. The daughter of the famous Spirit Detective had also inherited some of her father abilities as well. She could see spirit beasts and even had a little mouse demon that her father had given her. She always had her little Momiji with her, even if he had to be hidden. Her father had never told her where he got him.
When Yusuke saw his daughter's uniform his stomach jumped into his throat. “Saki, where did you say you were going to school now?”
“Sarayashiki Junior High, why?”
“Keiko, you are so going to get it when I get back?”
“Huh?”
Saki's father shook his head and started the car, “you'll see when we get there.”
“Do you know where it is?”
“Uh....yeah, I do. Buckle your seatbealt.”
Saki complied and soon they were pulling into the parking lot of the very same school that Yusuke had attended when he was younger. As they approached the door of Saki's homeroom, an older man walked up and whacked Yususke in the back of the head.
“Damn it, Takanaka what the hell did you do that for?”
“And just what are you doing back here you little delinquent?”
“Dropping off my daughter, it's her first day.”
“Daughter huh,” Principal Takanaka now took notice of the girl for the first time, “hmpf, she looks like she's just as thick headed as you were.”
“No, I'm worse, not a delinquent like mom says father was.”
“Thats why I am thanking the heavens that your mother was Keiko. I never imaginged that this idiot would ever attach himself to anyone let alone a wife and a child.”
“Yeah, grandma Yurameshi had to threaten him in order to take her on a personal trip.”
The principal looked at Yusuke in shock, “what did your mother say she'd do?”
A line of red went across Yusuke's cheeks and nose, “she had pictures,” was all he could say.
The man who had watched the boy since his first days of skipping class laughed out loud, “she might not be the best mother in the world, but she does know her son.”
“Yeah well, I saw enough of this place when I went here, I'm headed out sweetie.” He said giving his daughter a hug.
“I'll walk you out,” the old man offered.
“Whatever,” Yusuke said stuffing his head into his pockets.
After a moments silence, he shook his head, “I never imagend that you would have any kids.”
Yusuke shrugged, “life happens.”
“How are you doing anyway?”
“Alright I guess, Keiko and I have the apartment and we get by without any trouble.”
“What are are you doing for work, nothing illegal I hope.”
“I do specialty jobs for corporate types through a third party agency.”
“What kind of specialty jobs?”
Yusuke put on his sunglasses, “if I told you I'd have to kill you but then even if I did I probably couldn't get you off my back.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
The younger man waved him off, “later, old man.”
About an hour later, Yusuke was standing at the end of the strip that Keiko liked to shop at, reflecting on what he told Takanaka about his job. True, he did do specialty jobs and they payed him well, but everyone that he allowed in his life knew what those jobs were. He was a demon killer, he still did actual detective work in the spirit world, but most of his human world jobs were basically what Koenma called, “spiritual housekeeping.” That is what put food on the table for his family.
Keiko called out to him, with a heavily burdened Kuwabara in tow. She raced to Yusuke when he waved and gave him a big kiss.
“You didn't tell me that she was going to our old school.”
“Oops, did I forget to mention that? Sorry,” she said with a grin.”
“Yeah whatever, how was the shopping. Never mind, from the death stare I'm getting from Kuwabara I'd say it was pretty good for you.”
“Ha ha, very funny, you should be the one carrying these, not me.”
“Just stick 'em in the back and quit complaining.”
As, Kuwabara walked to the back of the car, a tentacle shot out of the ground and snatched Keiko along with Yusuke. Yusuke struggled to get Keiko and himself free as Kuwabara pulled out his spirit sword and tried charging on the main body of the beast only to get thrown to the ground. Out of nowhere an arrow streaked with light struck the beast. Though it caused it little harm, it's attention was drawn to the woman who had shot it.
“Uh oh,” the woman said just before the monster snatched her too and started fading out.
“Shit it, not again, Kuwabara, get to the Higurashi shrine and tell them that she was kidnapped, tell 'em I sent ya. They'll know what to do. You got that, go to Higurashi shrine.”
“What the hell?! What do you want me to do that for?”
“JUST DO IT YOU MORON!!” Yusuke yelled just before he faded out completely.
