Hiei's Tooth
Kurama sat quietly at his desk, which was full of text books and subjects' notes, daydreaming as he usually does nowadays. It was a Saturday afternoon, months after his first meeting with Hiei, and he allowed himself some time off from his homework, which was usually finished by that time.
The fourteen-year-old boy sighed wistfully, no doubt thinking about a certain youkai with three eyes and a foul temper. Minutes passed and he was so engrossed in his daydream that he didn't notice the opening of his window and a little handsome boy sitting on the sill.
“HIEI!!” he exclaimed in surprise when he glanced towards the window. “I didn't notice you come in.”
“Hn.”
Kurama's face turned from shock to pure happiness, all in a blink of an eye, as he looked at his little friend. He stood up and skipped towards him, smiling brightly. Hiei watched him impassively from the corner of his eye. When Kurama was right beside him, he ruffled Hiei's hair laughingly. Usually, Hiei would slap his hands away or utter a few curses but surprisingly, he remained quiet.
“Hmmm. You're more sullen than usual today,” Kurama mused. “What? Did you fall off your tree last night?”
Silence. Frowning slightly, Kurama bent down to see his face but Hiei turned away. Hurt and confused, Kurama straightened, all his happiness vanishing with that single movement.
“Hiei,” he asked softly, almost in a whisper. “Are you angry at me?”
Hiei shook his head, feeling guilty for letting Kurama think that.
“Then what's wrong?”
Hiei silently pointed at his mouth, his face expressionless. Seeing that Kurama was still confused, Hiei walked towards the table and took a pen and a sheet of paper. Writing quickly, he showed the paper to him.
“My mouth hurts,” Kurama read. “Your mouth hurts? When did this happen?”
“A few days ago,” he wrote.
“Does it hurt if you talk?”
“A bit,” he answered.
“What did you do? Bang into a tree or something?” Kurama asked, smiling, unable to resist.
Hiei glared at him as Kurama snickered quietly behind his hand.
“Okay, I'll be serious. Does it hurt if I poke…. here?” He poked lightly at Hiei's left cheek and received a sharp slap on the hand.
“Ow. Don't touch me,” Hiei growled.
“Hiei, I'm just trying to help,” Kurama said calmly, rubbing his red hand. “I think you have a toothache.”
“Toothache?”
“Yeah. It's a sort of pain in your mouth that you get when you eat too much sweets. I told you to lay off the ice-creams and candy-bars,” Kurama said, smiling again. “Come on.”
“Where are we going?”
“To the dentist.”
Twenty minutes later, they were in the dentist office, patiently waiting for their turn. Kurama amused himself by playing with Hiei's hair, trying in vain to flatten it down. The latter sat pouting on the plastic red chair, silently fuming and swatting the playful boy's hands every few seconds.
“Minamino Shuuichi,” the nurse called.
“Hai,” Kurama answered, standing up. “Come on, Hiei,” he said, practically pulling Hiei from the chair.
“Ah, Shuuichi,” the dentist smiled, squinting at him behind his specs. “What brings you here today? I don't have to see you for another three months. Though there's never anything wrong with those perfect teeth of yours.”
“Konnichiwa, Hiyoshi-san. My friend here is having a little toothache so I decided to bring him to you.”
“Toothache, eh? Well, follow me into this room. Come sit down on the chair and I'll have a look.”
Kurama nodded and pushed Hiei towards the door. “Go on, Hiei. He won't hurt you,” he said, smiling impishly. “And behave yourself. No fire-swords or fighting,” he whispered.
“Hn.”
A few minutes later, Hiei's loud scream rang through the office as the dentist pulled out the tooth. The sudden pain made it impossible for Hiei to shout out his usual string of curses.
Then Kurama could hear the sound of drilling and Hiei's questioning voice, “What's that? Why are you going to put that thing in my mouth? What are you doing?” Kurama squirmed and covered his sensitive ears as Hiei screamed once again.
Minutes later…..
“That went quite well, wouldn't you say?”
Hiei glared at him. They were out of the office and walking towards the park. Adults smiled at the cute picture of the two young boys walking together; one smiling and laughing with childish innocence, dragging his friend behind him who was pouting and frowning cutely. Soon, they stopped underneath a tree, sitting down beside each other.
“Kurama.”
“Nanda?”
“Why did the dentist give me this?” Hiei asked, taking out a little tooth he has been fiddling with in his pocket. “What should I do with it?”
Kurama glanced at it. “Oh, that. Well, you put it under your pillow for the tooth-fairy.”
“Tooth-fairy? What's that?”
“A tooth-fairy is a small itty-bitty female winged-creature who goes around collecting children's teeth.”
“Why would the fairy do a stupid thing like that? She has her own teeth, doesn't she?”
“Yeah. Well, maybe she has a thing for teeth or it's her hobby. I'm not sure why she does that but I know you get a reward for your tooth.”
“A reward?” Hiei's ears twitched at that sound.
“Yep.”
Silence followed as Hiei thought the information over. Kurama snickered silently at his little tale. He remembered his mother telling him the exact same thing when he first lost a tooth. The morning after, his tooth was gone but was replaced with five bright new shillings. It was a small white lie that adults usually tell their children.
“Kurama.”
“Hmm?”
“Can I borrow a pillow?”
