Tokyo Babylon - Description/Synopsis
Volume 1 Is it possible for one person to be so lucky? Shinji Nagumo seems to lead a charmed life amidst the inherent dangers of building a skyscraper. Unfortunately, everyone around Nagumo has been rather unlucky - fatally so. It\'s up to Subaru Sumeragi, the most powerful medium in Japan, to piece together the clues before there?s another death. Are the accidents due to just bad luck and random chance, or is it something more sinister at work? Subaru will have to work fast because the lucky Mr. Nagumo has made many enemies. And one of them is ready to sacrifice everything to create a creature that will end Nagumo\'s lucky streak - permanently! Volume 2 Terror is stalking the subways. Women were once save, but now each morning\'s train carries another brutal butchered body. Without a motive, the police are helpless against this psychotic killer. With nowhere else to turn, Mirei Hidaka, a psychic \"postcognitive\" is called in. Using her sense of touch, Mirei can feel the currents of the past and has the ability to witness murders hours or days after they\'ve been committed. But just as the threads are slowly starting to come together, Mirei\'s own life is in jeopardy! Its now up toe Subaru Sumeragi, to save the day. But this case won\'t be solved until the separate strands of destiny have been re-woven into a new patter - on that binds Subaru, Mirei, and a psychotic murder.

Swept away by cherry petals
This two Original Animation Videos can catch your eye with their lovely animation. Not surprising, since they're based on a bestselling manga series by the famous Clamp group. But if you look past that, you'll find an unusual soundtrack and a plot that'll keep you spellbound with mysteries, magic and romance.

The two videos don't have much connection except the main trio of characters - they're both stand-alone cases in the life of Subaru Sumeragi, exorcist and magician. Their style differs slightly, and altogether if you must choose one of two, I'd recommend the second one - I regard the plot as better crafted, and even more appealing to one's emotions and with secondary characters one can relate to. Still, both have compelling action and take up serious social issues in a way that's both intrisically human and as un-preacher-like as possible.

One word of warning though: as with all Clamp's work, you need to have an open mind about sexual preferences. Though apart from one look it's not evident in the first video, the second features the moments you might have seen in the manga, the ones that highlight the relationship between two characters - Subaru and Seishirou. It's nothing drastic - light-hearted teasing, a few looks, protective actions - but the fact remains that Subaru is a sixteen year old boy and Seishirou is a twenty-five year old man. For some, this may even be the appeal, but even if so-called 'yaoi' and 'shonen-ai', or even 'shoujo' (girl's anime in general) isn't your piece of cake, you'll be able to enjoy the movies regardless.

So, if you have a chance, watch it and be swept away by a storm of cherry petals, as a child Subaru is in the beginning of the second OAV - in one of the most beautiful scenes I've seen in anime to date.
