X/1999 - Description/Synopsis
A gripping drama with an evocative musical score, X features the outstanding artistry of Clamp, four women animators who head up an all female animation studio in Japan. Thirty-year veteran anime director Rintaro is best known in the US for directing the television series Kimba The White Lion and Astro Boy. Art Director Suichi Hirata (acclaimed for his background design in Ghost in the Shell) conceived the strikingly detailed, futuristic city depicted in X. The popularity of the film in Japan crossed over into the music arena as well, the theme song, Forever Love by the band X-Japan shot to the top of the Japanese pop charts. The story takes place in 1999, the Year of Destiny, and the beginning of the end of the world. The future of the universe rests on one young man, Kamui Shiro, who must destroy either the Dragons of Earth or the Dragons of Heaven - two opposing armies. He alone must decide whether humanity should be destroyed to create a purified universe, or whether it should be protected to preserve civilization. Two oracles, the sisters Hinoto and Kanoe foresee the coming of the Dragons and predict opposite outcomes. Each sister gathers strength and ammunition to insure her own vision for the future. However, neither sister realizes that there is one man who has an even greater power than the Dragons, and that ultimately he will determine the fate of the earth.Which sister will prevail and how does Kamui fit into their struggle? The answer to this question will forever affect humanity.

X/1999 is a retitling of \"X\". The title was changed when the series was licensed in America to prevent confusion with the Dark Horse comics by the same name. X/1999 is continued in a TV series and an OAV, as well as spinoff series \"Tokyo Babylon\".

X is a nice anime, though rather complex
I like X because I think that the characters are really cool. Not only that,I think that Clamp seem to actually understand how each of the characters feel.I like the twisted way the characters destinys seem to go and how much they are entwined with each other.

I recommended X to everyone who likes anime with a deep twist in them.

X: too much,too basic(WARNING: story spoilers)
RATING: **1/2
This anime is a srtict to series movie. For it seems it has left off from something else. For anyone who hasnt seen the series such as myself should stay away from this. This is only to the fact it feels awkward in the begining and sadly stays that way through out. This movie is simply nothing but eye candy in my opinion. The rest is flawed one way or another. The music has quite an erie tone to it but also shallows in parts when it needs it most. the characters are cut out and while some are kind of decent they all really just dont have any real reason of being (all except the protagonist die anyway). The plot is inept and comes off just insipid. What i got out of it is some guy returns from some place and just ends up in some mess only he can clean up.This a simplistic version of saying things so don't think this plot is really something because it means nothing. To its credit though it does have some slick charcter designs and some cool animation but some of it is sooner the top its hard to specify anythings purpose. But the true flaw is thats its uninvolving, and everything is just thrown out at you and even its characters suffer the same kind of feeling for just of chance. Storys like these need a better basis. Funny enough actually it feels like mission impossible (you have the select indivduals to aid you in your mission if you choose to except). I dont know alot about the series so most likely my review wont come through. Its concept when overlooked by for some
.reason confliction between fuma "i forget the other one', it becomes stronger because when the forces of evil decide to use fuma as the oposser of "i forget the other one" the dnt realize how evil he became. In a way that is a good conception but when it seems even more inept is each side needs another to start the apotacliptyic battle. Wow what a basis. IN a nutshell though its got pluses on animation, and a little bit on concept and music, but with weak characters, storyline, so-so voice overs, visual non sense, intro it seemed too much to bare or care. I supose fans o fthe series will pay respect to ths movie. Theres too much to say. I have seen the movie throughly 2 times nad i havnt found much difference in opinion

If you read the books, you'll like the movie
The movie version of "X" has beautiful animation, outstanding music and very good voice actors. Visually, it's a feast for the eye, but be aware that if you haven't read the manga, you might get lost. Very easily.

I think this might be a result of an attempt to squeeze 16+ books - each almost 200 pages of lovely artwork by Mokona Apapa - into merely 90 minutes. Due to this, the dramatic emotions that drive the characters aren't presented. Often the carnage may seem pointless and without motivation, though still lovely. Some characters are so widely different as to be completely unrecognizable, and the intricate network of relationships is nowhere to be found.

Another feature is the almost-absolute cutting down on the homosexual themes of the manga, from downplaying of relationship between the characters that the Clamp group devoted a whole series to (the magicians Subaru and Seishirou) to complete absence of some manga scenes that had an almost sado-masochistic mood. This, combined with the rougher character design that makes the male characters less androgynous-looking, converts "X" from a girls' series into one any person can enjoy. If they don't mind getting a little lost, that is...

For a fan of the manga, the "X" movie is a must. If you haven't read it, watch it as well - it'll provide entertainment and possibly make you curious enough to buy the tomes, which are well worth it.
