Black Jack - Description/Synopsis
In the medical profession, there is a name spoken in hushed tones, of an unlicensed genius physician who can save lives - for a price. His name is Black Jack, and he is a dashing, moody figure, caped in black, a Harlock of medicine, a man who lives by no rules other than his own - and the Hippocratic Oath. A man who would defy the will of God himself in the name of preserving life. He works with his little assistant Pinoko (who has a massive crush on the doctor), dealing with medical cases not very well known, which can be strange, dangerous, or not known at all.

Black Jack is the doctor Tezuka wished he could be, one free of the constraints of the modern rules, who can heal and help on his rules. He travels the world helping those who pay him, sometime those he takes mercy on, and always those who move him. Despite not having a valid license, he is still the doctor of last resort, the only man who keeps the reaper at bay. Sometimes though, he\'s the one who brings the reaper...

Very good... sometimes
Black Jack is a very strange anime for the fact that throughout the 8 chapters the entire personality of the series changes drastically from one episode to another. In general it may be seen as a medical drama, but everything else is variable. This is posible because the eppisodes do not form a straight storyline but can be watched in any given order. During the first part it develops a dark, almost grotesque atmosphere where disease and pain drive the characters' lifes along the abyss. Mythical viruses and gory operations combine with a hopeless vision of contemporary politics: inequality, colonialism, civil wars; a world that is sick itself, all narrated by the unemotive voice of the impartial mercenary Dr. Black Jack.
Unfortunately this line is lost during the second half of the anime series. The underground observer turns into an exemplar hero and emergency resources like time travel are introduced for simple purposes of getting it on. We actually see wide portions of comedy. It is hard to believe we are still watching the same series or the same characters. Still the main part of it is really worth watching if you enjoy dark or realistic anime.
