Akira - Description/Synopsis
It is the year 2019, three decades after World War III, which destroyed Tokyo and shattered the world. Now, in Neo-Tokyo, the world may once again face destruction. A child has escaped from a top-secret project dedicated to the creation of humans with tremendous psychic powers. He is found by a motorcycle gang and injures one in an accident. Psychic powers awaken in the injured boy, Tetsuo, and warp his mind into a killing machine seeking revenge.

The movie was originally released Stateside by Streamline Pictures in 1990. Re-released by new licensor Pioneer (now Geneon) in 2001.

Based on the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo. Previously released Stateside by Marvel in a colourized and heavily edited form, now licensed by Dark Horse and published in unedited black and white. 6 volumes, somewhat larger and more expensive than most other manga titles. The manga version differs greatly from the movie, with much fuller development of the characters and plot.

akira (minor spoilers)
rating: ****1/2

probably one of the best animes to date. All of the most breath taking animation, complex concept, slick design, and a heightning musial score, as well as a decent voice cast for the engish dub these atributes alone make this past a 5. Unfortantly though the narative doesnt explain evrything which leaves people sometimes confused, and the " charactrs get caught between situation" Leaves things feel uninvolving . This also leaves the protagonist spending most of the time figuing out what is going on. Still though this movie requires more visual thougt I prosume, and incases like this when the government has the control of things and things go awry, situations like that are bound to be run into. In that fact the premice can be overlooked. These cons are minor at best. Still though it earns its place as a land mark and a masterpiece within the field of animation as well as cinema alone

Akira? Synonomous with 'excellent', if you ask me.
Coolest anime I've ever seen. Hands down. I was a little disappointed at how much was cut- I'm still trying to get my hands on the manga, but I've seen articles contrasting the manga to the anime. But they didn't cut out anything that would horribly spoil the plot... it was terrific.

Hmmm...
I've been reading the manga, and believe me, the movie deviates from the manga in many ways, but the underlying themes are all the same. Ranging from political upheavals, and the dangers of science, this anime is an amazing example of how much power can be put into an animated movie. Or for that matter, any movie I've ever seen. This is one of the best animes, and defintally deserves the pedestal it's been placed upon.
