Ch 34: How Can I Tell You, I Love You

Inuyasha paced nervously back and forth across their.. no his living room squeezing the engagement ring in his hand. The day before purchasing the ring had felt the right thing to do, but now it seemed like a huge mistake.. It wasn't only the matter of cold feet, but the fear of rejection. He collapsed onto his couch and began slamming his head back against the wall in frustration. His neighbors below began banging on the wall and yelling.

“Sorry!” Inuyasha yelled at the floor. He took a deep breath and opened up his hand to look at the ring. It was everything and nothing to him at this moment. It held the potential to make or break his future and held all his hopes for starting a family with Kagome one day. He took a glance at the clock and couldn't help but chuckle at himself.. It read 3:12 AM.. He still had the whole day to worry about Kagome Higurashi.. Kagome Takahashi.. Kagome Higurashi-Takahashi? Eh. Kagome. The name echo through his mind. Kagome.

“Kagome.. Kagome? KAGOME!!!” Screamed Sango waving a dark green dress in front of Kagome's blank face. “ Kagome, what do you think?” She shoved the dress into Kagome's hand along with several more dresses she picked from the rack and began to shove Kagome in the direction of the dressing rooms. Kagome suddenly snapped out of her thoughts and dug her heals into the wooden floor of the boutique.

“ What did you just give me? Why am I buying new dresses? I can barely afford to pay rent.” Kagome passionately said while she thrust the dresses at Sango. “I'm sure I have something good in my closet.”

“ Did you say you needed a job?” One of the store's associate's popped out from nowhere. He had on a pair of skin tight jeans and a equally tight hot pink t-shit. “ I'm Jakotsu.. We are looking for someone to help out part time. The pay is really good, the work is easy and you get a 50% off of everything in the store.” Kagome blinked slowly and a smile crept on her lips.

“ I'm a college student so the hours would have to work around my schedule.” Kagome waited for the next reply from the man.

“Of course of course. I own the store and you can pretty much make your own hours. Your employee discount kicks in now of course. When can you start?” Kagome wanted to jump up and scream, but opted for a more dignified response.

“ Um. Er. Uh.” Kagome shook her head and laughed. “ The soonest would be on Tuesday if that's okay.” Jakotsu giggled slightly.

“ Tuesday's fine. Be in at nine?” Kagome nodded enthusiastically yes. “ Cool, I gotta get back to work. See ya.” Jakotsu smiled to Kagome and winked at Sango who smiled back.

“ How lucky!” Sango said once again pushing Kagome towards the dressing room. “ Try these.” She hung the dresses on a hook within Kagome's dressing room and shut the door.

“ I was beginning to worry about paying the rent.” Kagome said as she pulled one of the dresses over her head. It was the dark green dress Sango originally chose for her. The dress was simple with thin straps on the shoulder and a low neckline. “ I get a 50% discount on clothes too. I have the feeling that half if not all my paychecks will go towards shoes and underwear.” Kagome opened the door of the room and showed Sango.

“No.” Sango shook her head negatively. “ It's too.. I don't know. I just don't like it.” Kagome shrugged and went back in the room. After several minutes of changing clothes Kagome finally settled on a red strapless dress made of satin. The dress came down to her knees and had an A-line shape which began at the hips. “If this dress doesn't make Inuyasha stay in Tokyo I don't know what will.” Kagome rolled her eyes at Sango's comment and stepped back into the dressing room.

“ You know me and Inuyasha aren't like that anymore. We can't. He's leaving and that's that.” Kagome slipped off the dress and placed back on her original clothes. “ He's going to Seoul to complete his internship and I will become a doctor.” Kagome finished changing and stepped out of the room. “We have an understanding. We're going to be friends now.” Sango laughed loudly.

“ Are you convincing me or yourself?” Kagome frowned at stared at Sango squarely in the eyes. “Okay, I know that look.. I'll drop the subject.” Kagome turned silently from her friend and headed towards the register.

Inuyasha sat back idly pushing the buttons on his TV remote. He was wearing a dark gray suit and a black shirt beneath his blazer. Basically, he looked hot. Inuyasha had changed clothes a few hours ago possibly because it made him feel as though he was closer to seeing Kagome. Reaching into his pocket, Inuyasha pulled the black velvet box from his jacket pocket. For the umpteenth time he opened the box and stared at the ring that held his future.

“ Fuck this.” He growled roughly shoving the box back in his pocket. He began to get up when his phone rang loudly. The name flickering on his phone was the name he had murmured to himself numerous times. “Hey Kagome.”

“ Hey.” Inuyasha sensed the worry in Kagome's voice. “ Do you mind if I came over early? I guess I got ready too early so I'm bored.” Inuyasha sighed softly.

“ Of course of can. You never need to ask.” Inuyasha stated awkwardly as he began to walk towards his front door. Kagome said goodbye and before even getting to unlock the door he heard Kagome knock. Inuyasha smiled earnestly at Kagome as he looked into her eyes. Kagome reached out and hugged Inuyasha with uncertainty.

“ So where are we going?” She asked as she pulled away.

“ On a boat ride.” Kagome's eyes lit up with delight.

“ I've never been on a boat! How exciting!” Inuyasha smiled with relief at Kagome who continued to gush about how excited she was.

“ Let's get going.” Inuyasha said with a smile. At least she WANTS to go on the boat.

The car ride to the port was natural and reminiscent of their car rides before everything changed. “So the boat is a restaurant?” Kagome asked curiously.

“ Yea, it's pretty cool. I reserved the entire upper deck.” Inuyasha stated nervously. After parking they made their way towards the boat. It was a fairly large boat and had several lights yet still held a certain air of romance about it.

“ Name and number in the party?” The host stated with a bored tone when Inuyasha and Kagome approached the podium. The host was drawing what appeared to be a lobster with a hat and never removed his eyes from his drawing to look at Inuyasha or Kagome.

“ Takahashi and 2.” Inuyasha stated coldly at the pompous little bastard drawing a stupid little crustacean with a stupid fruity hat. At the utterance of Takahashi the host jumped and his drawing fluttered to the floor.

“ Oh, Mr. Takahashi of course. Right this way.” The host mumbled immediately leading the couple to the upper floor. He bowed to them both before running off.

“ Fuckin' idiot.” Inuyasha muttered angrily.

“ It's ok!” Kagome assured him as she took his hand. She was unaware of the actions of her hand as it began to stroke Inuyasha's. “ Let's just enjoy the boat ride.” Inuyasha nodded dumbly because he was too preoccupied with the feeling of Kagome's hand on his. The evening went along with a hitch and soon desert would arrive and he would make his big move.

“ I want to talk about something with you.” Inuyasha stated staring down at the table with unease.

“ Let me guess.. Seoul? Your plans on soul.” The half demon opened his mouth to speak, but Kagome continued to talk. “I'm glad you're going you know? It's a wonderful opportunity for you. With you gone I think we can fully reach our own potentials.. We're so different in every way and I think that it's good you're leaving. Our fight before has haunted me quite often. Your words were hurtful, but they were true. We haven't been together for very long if you think about it and it was a mistake to get too caught up in this commitment so soon.” Inuyasha felt his heart drop into the pit of his stomach and the engagement ring felt like a weight in his pocket. Kagome continued on as Inuyasha's heart broke. “ I hope you date. I will too.” He was hearing snippets of Kagome's speech. “ In two years we'll be completely different people and I know we'll stay friends.” Kagome ended her rant and smiled to Inuyasha sweetly, so sweetly it felt like a heavy boot crushing the remains of Inuyasha's heart and soul.

The rest of the evening passed in a daze to Inuyasha. “ Are you all right?” Kagome asked as she went over to Inuyasha who was looking over the railing to the dark water below. Inuyasha's silent smile, which was supposed to reassure Kagome had caused doubt to seep into her. She was unsure of what could ever be bothering him and her speech during dinner never crossed her mind.

“ I just have a headache.” Inuyasha put an arm around Kagome's shoulders and pulled her closer to him. “I'm glad I had you for at least a little while. You've become a part of me.” Kagome blushed and looked up at Inuyasha cautiously. While staring into Inuyasha's eyes she swore she saw a twinkle of moisture in his eyes. “Let's head back home.” Kagome nodded silently and headed back towards the table to get her purse. Inuyasha waited until Kagome was safely away and pulled the small box from his pocket. Holding the box over the side of the railing he debated whether or not to toss it over the side.

“ Inuyasha?” Kagome called. “What are you doing?” Inuyasha quickly placed the box back in his pocket.

“ Nothing.” He said as he walked towards Kagome. “Just stretching.”

Author's note!!

I want to thank all my fans.. I had no idea I had so many people that into my story.. WOW well over 500 messages! Well, I know I would post, things have changed so much for me and I'm going to try my best.. This is my chapter after a VERY long hiatus. I'm in nursing school and in a very nice relationship, which will head down the altar eventually, which coincidentally began when I began when I decided to not go to the Navy and stopped writing. I'm back! This story has been very hard to write as I constantly had to reread what I wrote and familiarize myself with my own story. I'm sure I'll have mistakes and possibly write about characters or concepts that MAY not work…. So sorry!
