CHANGING DARKNESS INTO THE LIGHT

Book 1: Changing darkness

Chapter 1: The beginning

One year after the battle of Coruscant where the Yuuzhan Vong had defeated the new republic,
hope has risen in the imperial remnant. The greatest of all warriors came back. Thrawn.
The invincible genius, murdered by the rebels, came back. And took command.
The imperial remnant had a new emperor.

At the same time, a new order of the Sith appeared. Their apprentices learned the ways of the
dark side, and the ways of the Jedi as well. This new style, founded by Brakiss in the shadow
academy, was the new path of the Sith. Under their master, Jossir Tharagon, the Sith became
the executors of the emperor.

--------------------------------------------------------- --------------- ----------------------

Imperial deep space reconnaissance probe 11243-xc74-7983 on position in the territories of
the wild space. In a system, which had no significance in the battles which were fought
between the stars. Until now.

A large energy output strong enough to be detected by the probe, changed this.
An energy which had no similarities to any form of energy which was used by the empire.
An energy which came from a battlefield.

----------------------------------------------------- ------------------- ----------------------

2 weeks later

An imperial officer on courier duty brought reports to the emperor.
"My Emperor, here are the new reports from the probes in the wild space. No Vong activities.
There is only one interesting report, it lies on top."
"Good."
Then, the officer left.

Thrawn began to read the report. Only a fast blink revealed the fact that he was surprised.
After finishing the report, he closed his eyes.
A few minutes later, he ordered that the supreme commander, Grand Admiral Palleaon, should
report to him.

A few minutes later, the Grand Admiral enters the Emperors chamber.

"My emperor."

"Grand Admiral. Have you read the report from the wild space?"

"Sure. But I see no significance in it. A defect of the probe is the most believable
explanation."

"Yes. And it is the way of least resistance. The empire can not ignore such an occurance.
This energy, which is far too strong for such a primitive planet, has a waveform pattern that makes
it inpenetrable for the most weapons."

"If the probe is correct. Otherwise, there is nothing."

"We can not ignore the fact that there could be the ultimate weapon against the Vong out
there. If this report is correct, no Vong plasma or accelleration weapon is strong enough to
penetrate this energy field. But, if necessary, our high-energy weapons can slice through.
This is far too important to be ignored."

"I have to agree. I think that a recon-gun boat will be sufficient fot this task."

"No. There are far better possibilities."

"Which are?"

"Tell me, what do you think of the new Sith-order?"

Pelleaon, not really surprised by the change of the topic replies:
"As I said before, they are a threat to the empire. Their so called Dark Lord has often
declared that the Sith should rule everything. His struggle for power is a great peril
for the stability of the empire. We should wipe them out. Immediately."

"Do you know who would be the new Dark Lord if Tharagon dies?"

"Yes. He is the best hope for a stable Sith-order, but he will be consumed by the dark side.
Every Sith met this fate, and he will be no exception."

"And if we can change his faith?"

"I wouldn't know how. If we could, it would be the best thing for the empire since your
return. He's the best pilot we have, and a very good tactician. Most importantly, his ability
to design the best fighters and spaceships exceeds even our best design-teams.
We need him, but I see no way how we should be able to let him live.
In the end, he will try to gain the leadership of the empire, and then we have to eliminate
him."

"We can change his faith. He has a weak spot. And now we have the perfect opportunity to use it."

"I don't understand. Which weak spot, and what opportunity?"

"He became a Sith out of his state of mind, his feelings. They had consumed him. Anger, hate and
aggression followed. This state of mind, these feelings were the reason to choose the dark side.
But what would happen if we take these feelings away?"

"I wouldn't know how. As a Sith, he has every opportunity to change.
He is not interested. And I see no great event which could alter this."

"I do. Have you looked on the information about the planet where we detected this energy-field?"

"No, not really."

"The planet is populated by 3 billions of humanoids. Primitive technology. Nothing what we would
call a spaceship. Some strange religions, no real government, no real science, no knowledge of other
planets and lifeforms and no peace. And contrary to you, I have also read the information about
our young friend. I am sure, there he will find what he need to change."

"You mean, there he will find what he desires?"

"More what he needs. And if we can stabilize the Sith-order we would have a great tool for our war.
Terminate Tharagon, and change the Sith to a more Jedi-like order, and most of our inner problems
are solved. To do this, we need a Sith, which will not be consumed by the dark side."

"Is that possible? I always thought that every Sith which rejects the dark side became a Jedi."

"Or is dead. We need no Sith. They are too dangerous. But in this order, we have the persons which have
the ability to become our Jedi. So we have to change the order. He can do it, and I will give him
the opportunity to do it."

"How?"

"I will send him to investigate the whereabouts of the energy-field. If I am right, he comes back
as our first Jedi, otherwise, we still have this new weapon. We can only win."

------------------------------------------------------------ ------------ ----------------------

2 days later

"My emperor."

"I have an order for you."

"Yes my emperor."

"You will fly to a system where we have discovered a new form of energy. You will find all
information about it, how we are able to use it for our purposes, and you bring this informations
directly to me. You will do everything which is necessary to gather this informations. There is
no time-limit, but I expect fast results. If you fail, we will send an invasion force to get
the data. And it would be wise for you, that you are dead, if this is necessary."

"As you wish, my emperor."

-------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- ----------------------

<Damn! Now that I have everything in place, now, where I have the perfect opportunity to kill
Tharagon, I get this stupid assignment. And I can do nothing else than to accept it.>

He went through the halls of imperial palace, until he find a communication console. He tipped
his authorization code, and established a link to the military space-command of Bastion.

"I have new orders for the Aggressor. Set up a secure connection to the Captain of that ship."

"Yes, sir."

After 30 seconds of silence, an image appeared.
"This is captain Raad, commander of the Aggressor. What do you want?"
Then he recognizes the man which has the new orders for him.
"Sir. How may I serve you?"

"You will load down star-maps of the sectors 77-4-136, 77-3-136+135+134, 2-1-22, 34-2-46, 83-2-267
and 45-3-3. I will board your ship as soon as possible. When I arrive, you will bring me to the
coordinates I tell you."

"Yes, sir."

------------------------------------------------------------ ------------ ----------------------

12 minutes later, he started with his personal fighter, one of his own designs. The spacefighter,
an advancement of the Tie-Defender, was built as a multi-role fighter. 6 laser cannons,
3 ion cannons, 2 missile launchers with 18 missiles and 2 torpedo launchers with 12 torpedoes were an
armament, with which no other fighter could compete. Strong shields, superior speed and the same
maneuverability as the Defender, made this fighter to the best existing fighter in the galaxy.

It's form was strange. The round cockpit in the middle, three sonar panels surroundig it, 1 under
the front of the cockpit, the 2 other, clearly behind the cockpit. The solar panels had the same
style as the panels of the TIE-Interceptors.

------------------------------------------------ ------------------------ ----------------------

As soon as he boarded the Aggressor, he went to the captain.

"Raad."

"Sir."

"You are not worthy of your position. You are a disappointment for your superiors, for your family
and for me, since I promoted you to captain."

"S..S..Sir!"

"Now you die for your incompetence."
With that said, he reached out for the dark side, and began to freeze the captains lungs.

"A....AAAAHHH.........AAAAHHHRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

He went to the communicator and activated it.
On the image screen a young man in the uniform of a commander could be seen.
"Sir."

"Are you the number one of this ship?"

"Yes, sir."

"False. Now you are the captain of this ship."

"Yes, sir. ............... May I ask what happened to captain Raad?"

"He disappointed me. By the way, send a workcrew to the captains quarters. They need to clean up."

"Yes, sir."

"You have the information I sent you?"

"Yes, sir."

"Then you know what you have to do."

"Yes, sir."

------------------------------------------------------------ ------------ ----------------------

3 days later

"You will maneuver your ship behind the moon of this planet. There you will hide. If I need something,
I will contact you."

"Yes, sir."

With that, he boarded his fighter, and initiated the start-sequence. After his launch from the hangar,
he activated the cloaking system and begun his way towards the planet.
<Hm, this planet looks like nothing. No wonder. To call it a backwater-planet would promote this piece
of dirt more than a few steps. I hate this planet. It reminds me of my home-planet.>

------------------------------------------------- ----------------------- ----------------------

As he begun to enter the athmosphere, he started to recall the informations he already had.
<First, land near a city called La Paz. Search for informations of their government. Since this
place was nearly unaffacted by the event they called "Second Impact" it is a logic place to search for
information. Hope that the idiots of IF-intel are right about that. Otherwise, they will pay for
wasting my time.>

After landing a few clicks outside of the city, he begun to search for a road which he had seen as
he landed. Soon, he had found the road and waited for a transport vehicle which he could use to
reach the city. As a small white car approaches his sight, he decided that this vehicle would fit
his purpose.

A little manipulation of the drivers mind, and it stopped.
He went to the car, and with his mind control, he forced the driver to exit the car.
Then, with a light snap, the drivers neck was broken and he had his transport.

He entered the car, but was soon faced with a problem.
"WHAT IS THIS FOR A SHIT!!"

This was definitely not a technology he could master. No thruster controls, no flight stick, no maneuver
jets and no repulsor controls.

<This is the same crap as we had on my home-planet. I never learned to drive such a piece of rotten junk.
Just great!>

He exits the car, and looked along the road.

"This will be a long walk." <Next time, first watch if I can handle it, THEN kill.>

After a walk of a half hour a bus came along the road and stopped. He entered the bus tricked the
driver that he had not to pay and was finally on his way to La Paz.

------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- ----------------------

<At least it is easy to find the government buildings. On every planet, these are the most eyecatching
pieces of architecture. And the buildings with the lowest average IQ inside.>

He looked to the entry of his destination.

<Two guards, only armed with pistols. Cameras. Primitive. The guards are weak minded, they are no problem.
And the security is so old, a little defect won't surprise anybody.>

With that he walked to the entry, manipulating the guards, and disabling the camera with an electric
discharge.

<No problems so far. The bureaucrats should be no problem either.>

His target was on the 2nd floor. A room with 2 large computers inside. He activated a terminal, and
looked on the screen.

<What's that for a language? Sounds horrible.>

He took a translator out of his backpack. Then he used his lightsaber to cut the wires of the keyboard,
so that he was able to link the wires with the translator.

<Now it is easy.>

He gave the translator the necessary commands and waited for the results. 4 minutes later, he had the
results on the screen. He was not pleased.

<No information available? Just great. Only a hint that the US-government, whatever that is, should
have information of the kind I search. Looks like I have to fly to Denver. At least there's a good
map with an usable coordinate system in this piece of junk.>

He didn't bother himself to cover his actions in the computer room. He simply left, walked through the
corridors, out of the building. Nobody tried to stop him.

2 hours later, he started his fighter and headed north.

----------------------------------------------------------- ------------- ----------------------

<Great, the same situation in less then 6 hours.>

He stood again on a road to a city. But here was a lot of traffic, so he found no problem in getting
a ride to Denver.

This time there was tighter security, but nothing he couldn't handle. The equipment was better, too.
And he didn't need to use the translator. The language of this people was strange, but familiar, so that
was not a problem.

The informations he found were another case. They were a problem. No infos about force-fields, advanced
technology, high energy weapons or the reasons of the energy readings which were found by the probe.
Not even some weapon data to gain knowledge of what kind of technology is available for use against him.

Only one interesting sentence:
Informations about this topic are accessible on the UN residence, code level blue.

And the info that the UN residence was in Vienna. The historical data showed that after the destruction
of a city called New York, the UN was relocated to Geneva, which was nuked in the Swiss-French war in 2002.
After that, the UN took residence in the last of the three former UN-cities. Which had the bonus that this
city was the capitol of a state which wasn't capable of any kind of war.

He sighed.
<Looks like I have to go to Vienna. This is a damned world journey. What's next? Beijing? Tokyo3?>

He left Denver and headed east, toward a continent called Europe.

---------------------------------------------------------- -------------- ----------------------

As he arrived in the woods near Vienna, where he hid his fighter, he got a big, positive surprise.
The language on the advertisements was the same as his native language.

<That should make things easy. Good.>

This time it wasn't necessary to stop a car. A walk of 30 minutes was enough to reach the city, and
the tram brought him within 30 more minutes to the center of the city.

On his way to the UN-Center, he decided to go through the old city center. He enjoyed that he was at
a place where he could use a language, which he hadn't used for far too many years.

On his way, he had a little encounter in one of the shopping sprees. A redheaded girl, packed with more
shopping bags than a lone person should handle, ran into him. Instead of apologizing, she shouted:
"Pass auf wo du hinlatschst, du Vollidiot."

"Dämliche Göre."

"Wie haben sie mich genannt!? Ich werde....."

That was the point where de decided that it was the best way of action to avoid further attention by
using his powers.

She stopped in mid-sentence, as he altered her memories.

<So, now she should recover in 90 seconds, when i'm away and forgotten. Next time, i'll kill this stupid
little brat.>

He walked away, to a nearby metro entrance. To his surprise, that metro brought him straight to the
entrance of the UN-center.

<Very good. As annoying as this little brat was, the encounter was beneficial for me.>

Security was tight, but compared to what he was used to, primitive.

<And guardians are never a problem. Boring routine dampens every mind, and weak minds are easy to
manipulate. Glad that I'm no jedi. They wouldn't use such effective methods, since they think that
this is evil. Those stupids.>

After he found an appropiate terminal, it was easy to gather some informations.

<They call this energy field AT-field. No technical datas available. Positron weapons. No technical
datas available. Angels. No datas available. Evangelions. No technical datas available. Just great.
AND WHERE I CAN FIND THE TECHNICAL DATAS???>

After a long search, he get an answer to his question.

<This must be a joke. TOKYO3?>

He whispered angry to himself: "IF-intel will pay for their incompetence. I'm not here for a
sightseeing tour around the world."

And again he had to fly to a new location. And again he had to hope that there he will find the
information he need to leave this pitiful excuse for a planet.

---------------------------------------------------------- -------------- ----------------------

After his longest flight in atmosphere of this planet, he reached the hills around Tokyo3. His sensors
showed that these hills were spicked with sensors, but he didn't understand what they searched for. They
scanned for wavelenghts that didn't exist in known technology.

<Irrelevant. Whatever they are looking for, it doesn't matter. The cloaking device works properly, they
have no chance of discovering me.>

And the city itself looked strange too. Many buildings without windows, all buildings heavily reinforced.
Built like a damned fortress.

<Nothing a good orbital-bombardement couldn't handle. Or an AT-AT attack force.>

He landed in a wood, on a place where he was pretty sure that nobody would stumble over his fighter.

"Tokyo3, here I come."

With that, he began his way towards the strange city.
