Byakuya stood still, every line of his body calm and cool as his dark eyes observed the three figures in front of him. How strange, he thought, that these two human children were such startling contrasts from their rough-and-tumble brother, and how different the teen was with those two girls in comparison to when he was with the other shinigami. Of the two girls, Kurosaki Karin was like a more polite version of her brother, but Kurosaki Yuzu was almost a world away in comparison to her elder siblings. Where Kurosaki Ichigo was roughshod and bold, and Kurosaki Karin blunt to the point of tactlessness, Kurosaki Yuzu was timid and soft.

Byakuya couldn't help but to study the lines of the substitute shinigami as he wrapped black clad arms protectively around the frail human figures of his sisters and vanished from the spot just as a hollow's tentacles hit the spot seconds later. He observed how the representative shinigami never left his sisters' sides for more than a few seconds, and not for the first time, Byakuya could see the sharp, calculating mind of the half human shinigami picking apart the situation, determining the best places to strike at, seeking the hollow's weaknesses, and all the while, blocking the carnage from his sisters' sight and hearing to the very best of his ability, while never once leaving them undefended.

As the last hollow was dispatched and the representative shinigami was kneeling in front of his sisters, checking them over for injuries, Byakuya spotted the normally hidden depths of those wine colored eyes. The noble could see the brightness of the wine colored eyes, could see how they softened and sharpened in the vicinity of his sisters, taking on a warm shine that never appeared for anyone else since his mother died, not even for Rukia, of whom, out of all their friends, the teen was uncommonly fond. No one but his sisters had ever seen those eyes turned toward them since Ichigo's mother had died, Byakuya realized as Abarai Renji and Kuchiki Rukia approached and the noble witnessed the warmth vanishing, replaced by an ever present scowl, as the teen's entire body shuttered off, setting up a heavy barrier between himself and the world, locking away the bright warmth and love that was reserved for family alone.

Seeing that, Byakuya knew that the one who would ultimately become Kurosaki Ichigo's life mate would be very fortunate indeed, for they would get the chance to always see those wine colored eyes when they were unguarded and spilling over with love and warmth and the promise that he would fight and die for them.

That night, sharp, wine colored eyes loomed over him, and as he strained toward his release, Kuchiki Byakuya could not help but wish that those eyes would soften and warm for him as they did when they were turned toward Kurosaki Karin and Kurosaki Yuzu. As those eyes shuttered and glazed over, still dark and sharp as he reached his release, Kuchiki Byakuya couldn't help but wonder if those eyes would ever soften for him.

As the noble drifted off into the depths of sleep, still wrapped in his lover's warm arms, he never noticed those sharp, wine colored eyes soften and warm as sword calloused hands brushed soft, raven locks away to reveal sharply chiseled features, stern and imposing in day, and soft and loving at night, calmer, and less burdened in sleep. Byakuya never noticed the petal soft lips that brushed over his temple and the soft eyes that swept over his form before they closed, and Ichigo too, settled into sleep's embrace, his arms still wrapped around his lover.
