Chapter 3
It's beautiful, Song whispered, after Syaoran had finished playing his song to her. He set his flute down and smiled.
“Thank you.”
But it's so sad… and angry… Song smiled. Still, I would like to copy it.
“Copy it?”
Song nodded. I can remember an infinite number of songs… and this is lovely, really. Can I?
“Of course.” Syaoran smiled as Song copied his tune, measure for measure…. Thank Clow that he had inspiration…
His stomach suddenly growled. He hadn't eaten since this morning… but before he could say a word, a tray of exquisitely prepared and expensive (he knew from one or two banquets he had attended before) food appeared before him.
“…”
Create is one with the Castle, so he senses your needs and thoughts. Song explained, as she helped herself to a goblet of raspberry wine.
“I see… well, thank you, Create, if you can hear me.”
The gleaming crystal around him pulsed lightly, and he thought he heard a whispered thank you, but he wasn't sure…
In any case, he applied himself to the food.
Master Yue usually keeps to himself, but he may summon you if he needs you.
“Thank you, Song.”
It is nothing, Syaoran. I'm going to go see Voice now.
Song vanished, and Syaoran finished the rest of his meal in silence.
Two days passed without anything really notable happening. Syaoran met the castle's few other inhabitants - Cloud, Storm, Rain, Voice, and Twin…
Odd… where were all the other cards? Running free? Staying with Cerberus or the other guardians? He didn't know, but it really was of no importance.
Unless the cards were scattered…
It wasn't as if he had any special role to play. All he had were four cards Empress Ruby Moon had given him. Nothing special, really…
He would just wait for the right time to strike…
Why would the Cards help him though? He was trying to kill one of Clow's guardians… surely…
Didn't the cards obey the guardians?
It made no sense, unless they were working on Ruby Moon's orders. She was a guardian as well, after all… and if her power was stronger than Yue's…
Who knew?
Fight and Syaoran stood on the battlements, watching. It seemed that there was a riot going on outside…
The prisoners were fighting amongst themselves.
“Should we interfere?”
We are to interfere only if they attempt to breach the gates. Yue-sama cares not for them.
“I suppose that makes sense…”
After all, these were prisoners condemned to death, so it made perfect sense. If they killed each other, so much the better!
The other prisoners were sent to wander the desert wastelands that bordered Cerberus's land. Either way, it saved the guardians the trouble of having jails…
He watched as blood stained the snow crimson, and several men fell. What happened to the corpses?
The answer was soon given, as they simply seemed to vanish.
“The Erase card?”
You guessed correctly, Syaoran…. But was it merely a guess?
“You know.”
We all do. We keep no secrets between our brethren.
“Then…” He frowned. “Why aren't you stopping me?”
It was not as if he wished to kill Yue, but he had his duty…
Because we have hope… and you have not harmed Yue-sama yet…
With those cryptic comments, Fight smiled. It's over. Erase will take care of the mess.
Syaoran nodded.
Yue reclined on his throne, not sleeping, but not quite awake either… he preferred to relive his memories, remember when Clow was still alive…
Yue-sama?
“What is it, Snow?”
Snow frowned. Cerberus-sama has extended an invitation for you to dine at his dwelling six days hence.
“My brother deludes himself. He drowns his sorrow in gluttony.”
Yue-sama, it has been nearly a hundred years since Clow-sama… surely…
“Enough.” The guardian narrowed his eyes. “You would do well to remember your place, Snow card.”
Snow frowned, but nodded as she exited.
Master Yue was scary when he got unhappy, because his icy rage was worse than his habitual silence…
“Wait.”
Snow paused at the door. Yes, Yue-sama?
“Send the little wolf in to me.”
Yes…
“Yue wants to see me?” Syaoran was surprised, if nothing else. The moon guardian mainly ignored his existence completely…. Of course, it had only been about a week, but even so…
He hesitantly entered the throne room.
“Yes, my Emperor?”
Yue scoffed slightly at the title, but showed no other emotion. “Sing for me.”
Syaoran blinked, thinking he had misheard. “What?”
“I wish to hear your voice, not your flute this time. Perhaps you are talented in this area. Sing.”
Well, he didn't know what would happen if he refused, but… perhaps it was better not to test the monarch's patience…. He closed his song, and began to sing…
His voice didn't come out as rough as he expected… it seemed that Song was helping, but Yue didn't have to know…
It didn't quite have words, but Yue appreciated it nonetheless… odd… the pain seemed to fade away, and if he concentrated on only the music, Clow's hurt faded to the back of his mind…
Perhaps this boy had some use after all…
Unfortunately, Syaoran was mortal, and after almost two hours, his breath grew short. His throat felt absolutely parched…
Yue finally noticed Syaoran's state, and made a sign with his hand, almost irritably. A tray with several glasses and a pitcher materialized, Create again…
Syaoran hastily nodded his thanks and downed two glasses of water.
“You are dismissed.”
He quickly left, not wanting to incur Yue's wrath. The moon guardian was so… odd. But he seemed sad…
I wonder…
