Prologue

As I walk through the art gallery he promised to meet me in, I feel so happy. I know he'll propose! After meeting him at a school meeting, I knew he was right for me. Despite the fact that we're both only 19, I know I'll wait! He will too! Suddenly, someone has just put a hand over my mouth, tied my hands, and pressed a knife to my back. “Be quiet,” he breathes in my ear. His breath is warm and rancid. “Now come with me,” he says. I know this is a nightmare. Why can't I escape it? I don't know why, but I feel so calm. Perhaps it's because I know I'll wake up. He can't be kidnapping me.

I am waiting for her at the Café Lindá. I know she told me she had something to tell me, but I can't wait to hear it. Have her parents changed their minds about our marriage? Ah, here she is now. “I have something to tell you,” she says. “My clan has engaged me to Hiiromi Hatako. I can't be with you anymore.” “Wait! No!” I scream, but she just keeps walking. This must be a dream. She can't have left me.
