FORTY-SIX

I was on a ship. I can tell I am on a ship by the smell of salt air, the creaking of metal, and the smell of blood. Wait, blood? My senses told me to approach and I found a slew of dead men and one wounded woman with a few minutes left to live if I did nothing. So I started healing her, sealing up wounds, letting the magic extract bullets, closing knife cuts and stab holes in her belly and limbs. Many wounds. The pale look suggested a healing potion would be justified so I gave her one, letting the magic replenish her missing blood. Her pale looks stabilized and finally I could recognize her soul at least.

“I knew you enjoyed sparring, but I always thought you were about using sharp words and harsh language,” I said quietly, stroking her hair. I got my arms under her and struggled to carry her. She’s bigger here than at home.

“Vasser das?” she asked in German. I struggled to remember it and managed to bring it to mind again. Everybody has past lives. Even me. It is part of why I feel so confident in my 108 Skills.

“It’s Loid. I’ve got you. Let’s get you back to the room and cleaned up,” I promised. I carried her where the voice in my head told me, growing stronger as I climbed stairs and down quiet corridors into the ship. Eventually I turned to regard a door and it opened. A tiny pink haired girl stared at me solemnly. Anya, my brain said. I carried Yor across the threshhold and into the room, going to the bathroom and helping her undress and bathe off the blood, healing remaining wounds and removing scars as I went. She had as many scars as a Skyrim shield-maiden. Eventually she took me in and stared in confusion. I head-patted Anya, and then dried and helped Yor dress for bed, tucking her in.

“Thank you for saving my Mama,” Anya said in very careful German.

“You are welcome, Anya-chan. Maybe someday you can save someone,” I suggest. She grinned then.

“I’m a super-spy!” she professed. I head-patted her and then retreated, shutting the door of the room behind me. I turned to regard previous me, waved slowly, and then retreated.

“Anya? Yor?” he asked uncertainly. I left the family to their quiet reunion.

The portal opened and I returned to Chiba City, to the entrance of my home. I took off my shoes and noted the blood-stains on my damp clothing. I’d need to launder this before bed.

“Hey bro,” murmured Komachi, wandering into the kitchen for a snack and glass of water. “You just get back?”

“Yeah. Couple jobs. Saved some lives and a family,” I offered.

“You smell like blood. Give me your clothes and hit the furo to clean up. I’ll launder your uniform,” Komachi suggested. I stripped down and handed her the clothes, wandering into the bathroom to rinse, scrub and soak. It says something when you can do this and its just family looking after each other. 100% cotton, easy wash. I will never understand the weirdos who create incest manga. Why? Its so gross.

I finished up, got some dinner in me, and then went to bed. For once I woke up where I went to sleep, and went to school as myself. Club after school was happy chattering by Yuigahama, while Yukino sat more quietly, commenting now and then, and staring in my direction meaningfully. When club ended I delayed so I could talk to Yukino.

“Thank you,” she said simply.

“You’re welcome,” I answered.

Really, that was all we had to say.
