This I Promise You

Goten sighed, totally miserable. Paris had broken up with him. But that's not why he was upset. . . She had made a big scene in public, trying to make him look like the bad one. He decided to head towards Capsule Corp. and get Trunks to try and cheer him up.

Just my luck, he thought as he approached. Trunks isn't even here! His ki was nowhere nearby. Goten sighed, about to go home, when he heard crying. He slowly landed on a balcony that led into a guest room. Who would be in here? He slowly opened the door and stepped inside, and saw a figure lying on the bed.

Goten slowly went in the room. It was nearly empty, except for a desk and the bed. He cautiously walked towards the bed, now able to make out the green hair and red outfit. "Bura?"

She looked up at him, eyes filled with tears. "He broke up with me. . ." she said. She was talking about her new boyfriend that she had been dating secretly for a couple of months. Goten wasn't supposed to know about him, but Marron had mentioned it a few weeks ago.

So that's why she's here. . . To avoid Vegeta and Bulma. . .

He sat on the bed next to her and started hugging her. He hummed soothingly into her ear.

When the visions around you,
Bring tears to your eyes
And all that surround you,
Are secrets and lies
I'll be your strength,
I'll give you hope,
Keeping your faith when it's gone
The one you should call,
Was standing here all along..

Goten thought the night before had been a mistake. He mad only meant to comfort Bura. . . But they had shared a night of passion and misery.

Misery. . . Heh, that'll be my life once Vegeta finds out about this.

Bura avoided Goten for weeks. That's what made him realize it wasn't just passion or lust or desire. It was something much deeper than that. Bura, on the other hand, was confused. She had always had a crush on Goten, but she thought she had gotten over him. She was almost convinced that that night was just a result of what had happened in her break-up.

But then they ran into each other in town. Goten decided to try and sort things out, and begged Bura to go to lunch with him. She couldn't help but smile. "All right. . ." she sighed, giving in.

They talked for hours, and then the music started playing. "Wanna dance?" Goten asked sheepishly. Bura smirked evilly. She's really enjoying this, isn't she? Goten thought as she pulled him onto the dance floor.

What had started out as a fast salsa faded away and a slow song replaced it. Bura frowned, unsure of herself, as Goten moved in and put his arms around her waist. Seeing her expression, he almost backed away. "What?"

She smiled, blushing, and put her arms around his neck as they started to dance. "Nothing."

And I will take
You in my arms
And hold you right where you belong
Till the day my life is through
This I promise you
This I promise you

It had been a year. Another one of Bura's secrets from her parents. From everyone. They saw each other everyday. They couldn't deny that it was love. But they did. That's why the fights started.

"WHY can't we tell people?" Goten demanded, pacing around her room.

"YOU KNOW WHY!" she practically screamed.

"NO, Bura, I DON'T!" he yelled in her face. He took a few steps away from her. "And I don't think I want to know."

Bura was taken back by this. "What are you saying?"

"I'M SAYING that this relationship isn't such a good idea."

She paused a moment, heartbroken, but then covered it up. Her father would have been proud. "FINE!!!" she screamed at the top of her lungs. She could sense her father and mother coming, startled by her scream. She walked up to Goten, starring accusingly at him. "If you don't want this relationship, this apparent burden, then don't worry about it. It's gone." She started towards her balcony, turning to say one last thing. "And so am I," she whispered. It was a threat.

Bura was gone within seconds before Goten could react. The doorknob started to turn and Goten took off at full speed.

It had been weeks and Bura hadn't returned. Vegeta and Bulma were worried sick, searching frantically, and Trunks was irritable. Goten was absolutely miserable. He felt bad for what he had said, but couldn't bring himself to look for her. But, finally, he admitted, he had no choice.

Bura was standing on a cliff. She had been traveling a lot in the past few weeks, clearing her mind. She still didn't want to go back. What if he hates me. . . As if on cue, someone landed behind her. She turned around, not wanting to get her hopes up.

"Goten. . ." It was barely above a whisper.

"You didn't tell me why."

Her face showed sorrow. He was right in front of her after weeks of not seeing her. And he looked angry at her. She couldn't have him, ever, not after leaving. He would hate her forever. . . "Goten. . . I don't want them to hurt you. . ."

He was surprised. He hadn't thought about what Vegeta and Trunks would do to him. She had been protecting him. Suddenly, his need for her took over his body and he ran to her, hugging her. Now she was surprised, too much to even hug back. "I'm sorry," he said, hugging her tighter. "I love you. . ."

"I love you too," she said, finally putting her arms around him.

I've loved you forever,
In lifetimes before
And I promise you never...
Will you hurt anymore
I give you my word
I give you my heart
This is a battle we've won
And with this vow,
Forever has now begun...

Just close your eyes
Each loving day
I know this feeling won't go away
Till the day my life is through
This I promise you..
This I promise you..

The wedding had gone smoothly. Nothing but a few minor problems had occurred. Bura beamed, ecstatic to finally be allowed to be with her mate in public. They hadn't told anyone about the wedding until the day before when they had announced it at a dinner party. A party in which Vegeta and Trunks had not been invited.

The two watched the couple as they danced together. Trunks wasn't sure what to feel. It was his best friend and his little sister - his only sister - and it was odd. He almost felt betrayed by their secrecy. But one look at his father made him change his mind.

Vegeta was fuming. He did NOT like the idea of his daughter - his ONLY daughter - mating with Kakkarott's second brat - ANY of Kakkarott's brats. And he wanted to kill the boy. But he saw how happy Bura was and couldn't bring himself to do anything but glare evilly at the dancing couple. Bulma was at his side, watching him as Bura and Goten had requested.

Goten and Bura were oblivious to the rest of the room. Nothing in the universe existed except the two of them. Bura put her head on Goten's shoulder and closed her eyes. This is heaven. . .

Over and over I fall
When I hear you call
Without you in my life baby
I just wouldn't be living at all...

And I will take
You in my arms
And hold you right where you belong (right where you belong)
Till the day my life is through
This I promise you baby

Callie and Bardock ran across the lawn, occasionally shooting ki blasts at each other. Bura smiled, remembering her own childhood. Callie looked just like Bura, except with dark blue hair. And Bardock looked just like Goku. Bura almost laughed, remembering how her father had reacted. His first grandson and he looked like the cursed Kakkarott. Bura hoped for her son's sake that when he grew older he would look more like Goten than Goku. After all, he was only 6 now. He couldn't always remind everyone of Goku.

A hand slipped around Bura's waist from behind. She turned around and saw a pair of ebony eyes staring at her. He smiled and hugged her, then released her. They both turned to watch the children.

"Did you think things would be like this?" he asked.

Bura shook her head. "But I couldn't ask for more."

Just close your eyes
Each loving day
I know this feeling won't go away
Every word I say is true
This I promise you

Bura was crying, sitting in the corner of her room. Callie was sitting to her right, hugging her mother desperately. They were both sat, unable to move or think or talk or do anything.

"Mom," called Bardock, entering the room with a book. He was now 15, and he still looked more like Goku than anyone else. He was much quieter than the other Son men, and more aggressive. He walked over and sat to the left of his mother. He handed her the book. Reluctantly, she took it.

"Family Album. . " she said, reading the gold text on the cover. Slowly, the three looked through the album, reading the captions and remembering things long gone. Bura sighed as she closed the book. Something fell out. She picked it up and looked at it. Just another picture of her and Goten.

"The back," Callie said, noticing something. Bura turned it over and read the poem. She had never seen it before. It was from Goten. The three cried together, longing for the past.

Finally, Bardock got up. He pulled up his mother and sister. They all shared the same thought. We love him but we have to move on. . .
