CHAIN OF HEARTS

Emerald Princess of Vernea

NOTE FROM THE GREAT WILL OF THE AUTHORESS

*Bounds in* LALIHO! This is the Great Will of the Authoress speaking, here to give you a little background information into this fic and what it will entail.

This fic, `Chain of Hearts', was inspired by the computer game `Kingdom Hearts'. To those not familiar with the game, it consists of visiting various Disney worlds with characters from both Disney and Final Fantasy. `Chain of Hearts' will be similar, but instead of Disney worlds, we are going to visit Anime worlds instead!

Now, isn't that a recipe for disaster, or at least some interesting results?

Now, as the Great Will of the Authoress, I should warn you that this fic will contain a large amount of shonen ai and yaoi content (nothing explicit, gomen nasai SY), so those of you who do not like boy x boy romance had better leave the building now! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Unfortunately I cannot cover every anime in existence, even if I am the Great Will of the Authoress, so I have chosen a select few of my favourites for this fic. The anime's chosen are: Yu-Gi-Oh!; Digimon; King of Bandit Jing; Gravitation; Fruits Basket; Excel Saga; Gundam Wing; Cardcaptors; Weiss Kreuz Gluhen; Escaflowne.

So please enjoy this fic, and don't forget to let me know your comments! I also play a minor part in this fic, so watch out for me! Oh, and the first chapter is kind of like the opening FMV, so to speak. It's also fairly serious, but don't worry, the humour starts later!!!

Chapter One: Loving You Solely

[Song Fic Chapter - Song: Loving You Solely]

Do we choose who we fall in love with…?

Or does fate decide…?

This is something… I have always wondered…

Nikhi Amari was sat silently at his desk, working hard on writing the perfect love letter for Makoto. Nikhi was not exactly the best at writing love letters - somehow the words just couldn't flow through the pen like they ought to. He could think of the words perfectly, but getting them from his mind to his hand was a different matter. He was the type of person who preferred to show his feelings with action rather than words, but he hoped that Makoto would appreciate the effort.

His window was open, letting in the cool air from outside. It was a perfect night. The sky was clear and full of stars. It was so clear it was almost possible to see the many worlds that were hidden amongst the stars. There was an old saying on Fortune Outset - `If you see a star appear then you shall be blessed with luck and love. See a star disappear, and bad fortune will come your way.' Until that point Nikhi had never seen a star appear, and hoped that he would soon see the birth of a new star - of a new world.

Nikhi suddenly put down his pen and quickly read through the letter he had written, before moaning and putting it on the desk, before looking over his shoulder towards the wastepaper basket at the far end of the room where his other twenty or so attempts were lying. It just wasn't good enough. Makoto liked love letters and that sort of thing, and Nikhi wanted it perfect.

Sighing heavily, Nikhi put his elbows on the desk and ran his hands through his short silver hair, being careful not to scratch the silver-furred cat ears sticking up out of his head, which were now beginning to droop with fatigue. Pushing his pen and paper aside, Nikhi folded his arms and laid his head down, looking down at the dark brown wood through the shadows of his arms. Although he wanted to finish the letter before sunrise, he couldn't resist shutting his eyes for a moment or two.

While his eyes were shut, a slight breeze began to blow in from the outside. It ruffled Nikhi's hair and the fur on his ears and tail, but Nikhi didn't notice because he had already dozed off into a light sleep. So he didn't notice as a small leaf floated in on the breeze through his window and landed daintily on his hand.

The moment the leaf touched his hand a bright light quickly filled the room, and Nikhi was instantly shrouded in the light. The light then began to fade, and Nikhi slowly opened his eyes.

He was no longer in his room. He was now standing on the walkway close to the shore of Fortune Outset, facing the tide as it glittered in the moonlight, watching as it swayed gently back and forth on the sand. Nikhi stared vacantly at the hypnotic sway of the water, until he spotted a small silhouette standing alone on the sand in the middle of the beach.

"I'm on my own

I love you so

Wholly"

Nikhi recognised the silhouette instantly. He couldn't mistake that beautiful figure anywhere. The perfect skin, lightly tanned from the sun; the head of beautiful hair that was black on the top and white on the bottom; and the soft black fur that lightly swept over his ears and his tail - he was very bit the perfect mate. Nikhi always believed that he and Makoto were soul mates, and that they were meant to be together.

At that moment, Makoto was standing silently in the middle of the beach, looking so forlorn and alone on the dark, shadowy sand. There was also something quite ominous about the way he stood there just looking out into the horizon, through the many miles of water that surrounded the island of Fortune Outset, never seeming to end.

Nikhi's grey eyes lit up happily as he saw Makoto standing there, and ran down to the rail with the same burst of energy he had every time he saw him. He jumped up onto the rails and called out his love's name. He jumped up and down excitedly and waved his arms round, calling out again and again, but Makoto just couldn't seem to hear him. Nikhi tried again, shouting until his voice was sore, but Makoto didn't hear him no matter how loud he yelled. The other catboy just stood there in total silence, his hair fluttering freely in the wind.

Eventually Nikhi stopped calling out and tilted his head to the side, wondering if Makoto even knew he was there. He stepped down off the rain and made to turn towards the stairs leading down to the sand.

He stopped very abruptly as a dark shadow suddenly fell down over him, and began to spread quickly across the sand towards Makoto. The shadow passed over him too and onto the ocean, and the moment the dark shadow moved over the water the light glittering caused by the moonlight ceased instantly.

"Why are you here? Oh…

I saw you here

And fell…"

Nikhi lifted his head up to the sky and saw a large cloud sweeping across the sky. The cloud was so thick it blotted out the light of the stars and the moon, which were the only sources of light during the twilight hours. The cloud had very rapidly cut off all that light in the space of a few mere seconds, leaving not one speck of light visible on the ground.

As Nikhi watched, a small speck of light began to shine out from the beach - the only bit of light amongst the darkness that had quickly enveloped the shore. The light was small at first, but it was rapidly growing in strength and luminosity. Nikhi's jaw fell open slightly as he saw the source of the light.

"From that moment I loved you

You filled the gap that left me cold inside."

The beach was glowing, all around the exact spot where Makoto was standing. There was a bright, intense white light emanating from just in front of Makoto, making Makoto's body just a shadow against the light. Nikhi was mesmerised instantly as the light filled his eyes, feeling its hidden power. He could feel his heart beginning to pound inside his chest. He even began to feel a little scared of the light, for it was unlike nothing he had ever seen before.

Eventually Makoto seemed to sense Nikhi's presence on the walkway behind him, and he slowly turned away from the ocean so that he was facing him. His eyes met with Nikhi's, and Nikhi instantly felt his heart skip a beat and his breathing stop, unable to move at all. Makoto's gentle light-green eyes were so enchanting and had poor Nikhi so spellbound that he had no control over his own body. Makoto even smiled a little as he saw Nikhi standing there.

The light was coming from a pendant that was hanging loosely around Makoto's neck - Nikhi recognised it instantly because Makoto never took it off. It looked like such a plain little thing - a small intricate pattern made of gold, with a small crystal hanging in the centre of it. The glow specifically emanated from the crystal, lighting up Makoto's chest and making the rest of his body seem like a dark shadow.

All of a sudden the light suddenly changed from light to dark, and Nikhi very abruptly began to breathe again, his heart exploding inside of him as he felt the change in the light.

The light became dark and evil, and was very quickly swamping Makoto up in its dark blanket. Makoto blinked and looked down in surprise at the dark light sweeping from the pendant. Even he seemed surprise by the sudden change in the light coming from his pendant.

"Something about you just pulls me near

No matter how hard I try."

Nikhi hurriedly jumped onto the rail and tried to call out to Makoto, but no sound came from his mouth. Nikhi stopped and held his throat, the panic rising within him, wondering why he couldn't shout. He tried again, but to no avail. The effect of the dark cloud was not only blotting out all of the light, but it was also preventing Nikhi from calling out to the one he loved. Nikhi's voice was swallowed up into the heavy atmosphere the moment the words left his mouth, leaving Nikhi powerless to help Makoto.

Makoto looked up at Nikhi and slowly raised an arm to reach out to him, but he seemed unable to make the effort to reach for him. The dark light now emanating from his pendant was now beginning to swirl around his chest and spread out across his body, over his arms and down his legs. It wouldn't be long before it swallowed him up completely. His light-green eyes looked almost sad as he looked at Nikhi's desperate face. His expression grew even sadder as the dark light finally swept up over his face and shadowed his view of Nikhi.

Nikhi could only watch and cry out in despair as his love's body disappeared into the cloud of darkness that swept up around him. Only his pendant remained untouched by the darkness, a small, tiny speck of white light remaining in the shadows that had clutched it.

That single white light slowly began to move out of the dark cloud that had swallowed Makoto and began to float towards Nikhi's outstretched palm. Nikhi reached for it, stretching his arm out as far as he could. The light touched the tip of his fingers and exploded into a shadow of light so bright that Nikhi had to shield his eyes from it.

"It don't change a thing `bout how I feel.

Please don't go away.

I'll go all the way."

Footsteps tore rapidly down the dimly lit corridors of Duelist's Castle, and moments later a small figure appeared from around the corner and into the main hall, heading towards the door.

Yugi Motou was one of the three legendary duelists' of Duelist's Castle - the castle built exclusively for the duelists of their world. One of the other legendary duelists resided in the castle, but the other's whereabouts was unknown.

Yugi tore down the corridors, the belt straps around his neck, upper arms, wrists and thighs whipping back in the wind. Hanging around his neck was the legendary Millennium Puzzle, also being blown back as he ran.

He reached the large black metal doors at the end of the main hall and pushed them open with his hands. Running out into the courtyard he could see his friends instantly. Joey, Téa, Tristan and Bakura were all standing in the middle of the courtyard on the lush, warm grass, duelling like they always did.

The young duelist stopped as he came out of the doors and looked out of his friends with a slight smile of his face. They all looked so happy together as they duelled, for that was what they lived for. Yet, Yugi couldn't help but feel a little bit sad as he watched them. Every day was the same in Duelist's Castle. Of course, Yugi loved to play the game with his friends, and every day he spent with them was precious, but he always longed for something more to happen. He wanted an adventure.

"Just to keep you, you near

Loving you solely is how I get through these lonely nights

I need to have you near."

At that moment Yugi's friends spotted him come out of the castle, and they all waved to him excitedly. Yugi slowly raised a hand and waved back, his other hand gently holding onto the smooth, shiny edges of the Millennium Puzzle. He knew he couldn't hope for any change in their calm lifestyle, so he put on a smile and began to run across the grass towards his friends.

Only two people refused to join in the games that were going on in the courtyard. Standing by the far wall were Seto and Mokuba Kaiba, watching as the games continued.

Seto Kaiba, like Yugi, was also one of the three legendary duelists in Duelist Castle. He did not have a Millennium Item like Yugi did, but his skill in duelling was almost unmatched. In fact, the only person who could challenge him in skill was Yugi himself. As for the third and final legendary duelist, no one knew what his/her skill was like. The final duelist did not reside in Duelist Castle, and no one knew where he/she was.

Standing faithfully beside Seto was Mokuba, his younger brother. Mokuba followed Seto and stood by him completely no matter what he did to try and beat Yugi. Unlike his brother, Mokuba was friends with the other duelists in the castle.

Folding his arms, Seto continued to wear the stern and angry expression on his face as he watched Yugi with his friends. The ends of his trench coat blew back in the wind as he leaned back against the wall, his golden Duel Disk attached firmly to his wrist.

"Solely

I will love you till the end of time

And a little further on."

Mokuba suddenly felt a cold chill run down his spine, and he quickly looked up towards the sky. Looking up at the bright ball of the sun he had to shield his eyes, but he could just about make out the shape of a small black dot that had suddenly appeared in the centre of the ball. He tugged on his older brother's arm and pointed towards the sky. Seto looked up, and his blue eyes opened wide.

A small dot of black had appeared from nowhere in the middle of the orange sun, and as the two watched it gradually began to grow larger. Within a few seconds the dark ball had grown so large that it was the same size as the sun, and a dark shadow fell over Duelist's Castle, instantly changing the scenery.

It was only at that point that Yugi and the others finally noticed what was going on around them. They all stopped duelling one another and looked up at the sky in surprise. Their eyes widened in fear as they saw the dark ball in the sky continuing to grow bigger and bigger above them, and as it began to spread out across the sky. Bakura's jaw fell open and he dropped his Duel Disk onto the floor, unable to take his eyes away from the sky.

It didn't take long for the black ball to spread out across the entire sky, casting a very dark shadow on their entire realm. The lush grass became dark and cold in seconds, and a cold chill made them shiver. The cloud itself began growl deeply within itself, ready to burst at any moment.

"I don't care what they say

My heart will always belong to you

Till the end of time."

The core of the cloud very suddenly burst open, and everyone on the ground jumped back and cried out in surprise. Waves of pure dark light emerged from the cloud and began to tumble down from the sky towards Duelist's Castle, and in particular towards the courtyard where they all stood. Yugi and his friends all stood awestruck as they watched the strange, wavering rays heading towards, none of them able to predict what they would do.

They got their answer as the first of the waves hit the edges of their world. The first wave struck the ground at the far end of the courtyard away from where they all stood. A loud explosion occurred, and giant chunks of grass and concrete were thrown up into the air as the beam pummelled its way through the ground and delved deeper into the earth, towards the very core of their world. Yugi and his friends just stared as the pulsating waves dug deeper into the earth.

Something both peculiar and terrifying began to happen at the point where the beam had struck the ground. Moments after the beam began to dig into the earth, the grass that grew around it very quickly became dark and lifeless, as though all the life had been sucked out from underneath it. After the grass went the soil, becoming dry and brittle.

Then the land began to crumble away before their eyes, creating a gaping hole all around the dark beam of light. The ground fell away in large chunks into the dark pit and out of sight. It continued to crumble away, heading towards Yugi and his friends. The group of duelists stared blankly for a few moments more as the crumbling ground made its way towards them, before they finally turned and began to flee away from the onslaught of the waves.

"Solely

I will love you till the end of time

And a little further on."

Unfortunately not everyone was fast enough to outrun the tremendous speed of the wave as it caused the earth to crumble. Téa was running at the back of the group, and was struggling to keep up with the others who were tearing away ahead of her. Téa pushed herself harder in order to outrun the falling earth, but she just wasn't fast enough. She felt the ground beneath her feet quiver and disappear, and she lurched forward.

She tried to grab the edges of the ground, but the moment she touched the tufts of grass they broke apart. She screamed loudly as she began to fall away from the edge into the swirling mass of darkness within the pit.

Yugi skidded to a stop and turned back to see the ground falling away behind him. He stared, wide-eyed as the ground reached up to him and then stopped, the pit reaching its maximum width where he stood. Yugi had a clear view of what lay beyond the edge of the pit.

He could see Téa falling away from him, and hear her voice screaming his name as she fell. The last he saw of her were her terrified eyes pleading with him, before the darkness swallowed her up and she disappeared.

Yugi lifted his head and saw that the same thing was happening all around him. The remaining dark waves slammed into the ground and even into the walls of Duelist's Castle. Wherever the dark waves hit they began to consume the ground, absorbing every rock and leaf until there was nothing left. Anyone unfortunate enough to fall into the path of those waves would be lost forever in an unknown world that Yugi didn't dare imagine.

"I don't care what they say

My heart will always belong to you."

Yugi looked back up into the sky. The dark cloud was still hanging in the sky, spreading out across the sky and casting its shadow over their calm little world. He couldn't believe that this was happening now, right before his very eyes. The dark energy that cloud was spewing was rapidly consuming every inch of his world, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. Not even the golden blade-shaped disk attached to his wrist could help him now.

He was completely helpless.

"Till the end of time."

Nikhi clutched firmly onto the warm, glowing ball of energy in his hands, his eyes gently shut so he couldn't see a thing that was going on around him. He couldn't feel any solid ground beneath his feet. He felt as though he was floating on nothing into a pitch-black abyss. The only comforting light came from the pendant that he held - Makoto's pendant.

A sudden pang of pain struck his heart, and Nikhi's eyes snapped open. He gasped for breath, his voice echoing in the empty abyss he was floating in. Yet he had no time to adjust, for at that moment the unknown force that had been holding him up suddenly disappeared, and the catboy fell down into the black abyss, reaching up for a hand that wasn't there to stop him.

He fell down for what seemed like forever, and all the while Nikhi continued to reach up with his one free hand for any kind of hold that would stop him. Realising that there was nothing to stop him Nikhi clutched onto the pendant, feeling its warm light in the centre of his palm. That light pushed away the fear that had overcome him, and very slowly Nikhi reached up again into the darkness. He felt no fear at all as he fell now, and didn't jump nor flinch as a small but firm feeling closed around his palm, slowing his descent.

Nikhi slowly opened his grey eyes and looked up. There was nothing there, but he could feel the presence of a warm hand grasping around his own. Nikhi's jaw fell open slightly. It was as though an angel had grabbed him and saved him from falling to his death.

The unknown hand continued to hold Nikhi all the way down into the pit, and Nikhi felt safe as long as that hand continued to hold him. They finally reached the invisible bottom of the pit and the hand eventually let go, letting Nikhi float gently down and set his feet firmly on the ground.

Looking around, Nikhi could see that he was the only one there in the darkness - a single lost soul in an infinite abyss.

Realising that he was completely alone, the fear and panic began to rise up within him again, and Nikhi once more clutched onto the pendant he had taken from Makoto when he vanished - his only comfort. He ran his hands across the golden metal that protected the jewel, praying that someone would save him.

While he prayed, a feeling of warmth began to spread across his shoulders and across his chest, as though the arms of the angel he had been praying for had suddenly wrapped themselves around him to keep him safe. Nikhi closed his eyes again.
