Summary: A contemplation of Honda Tohru, through Hanajima Saki's eyes.

*****

They sat together on the floor of the Sohma family's living room, drinking hot chocolate and wrapping presents. For Honda Tohru, this was one of the best times of the year, a time when she could devote her thoughts to picking out the perfect gifts for her friends and family and look forward to seeing their delighted faces when they received their presents; a time when she could bring everyone joy by cooking them a wonderful Christmas dinner; and most of all, a time when she could be together with those she loved and cared for, in a spirit of yuletide cheer.

For Hanajima Saki, this was also a wonderful time of year, but not for any of the same reasons as Tohru. For Saki, the fun of this time of the season was seeing Tohru so happy.

The remarkable thing about Honda Tohru, as all who knew her eventually came to realize, was that she was utterly incapable of even the most basic of human deceptions. Every emotion she felt was nakedly displayed in her eyes, on her face, and through her words. She was the epitome of human openness and honesty, and because she achieved this unwittingly, the impact was even more profound on those she blessed with her simple, overwhelming presence.

Saki knew that anyone who met Tohru---anyone with any shred of human feeling---couldn't help but be affected by her sweet, trusting nature. The fact that her emotions were so deeply felt and so openly expressed could do nothing but touch everyone she came across. If Tohru walked into a room smiling, within moments everyone in the room would be shaking with warm, friendly laughter. If Tohru was seen crying, anyone who witnessed this sight couldn't help but be stricken with the deepest sense of misery. Tohru both reflected the emotions of the ever-changing world around her, and orchestrated the emotions of life simply with her presence.

Perhaps because she was so incapable of disguising her own feelings, Tohru was also incredibly receptive to the feelings of others, and because of this, she had a keen understanding of the basic humanity in every person. For her, there was no evil; only people who were misunderstood, or who misunderstood themselves. For her, the old adage that all humans were fundamentally the same was made into a cliché, but ultimately reliable truth. She saw the good in everyone, even when others didn't always pay her the same respect.

To Saki, Tohru represented absolute beauty. Saki saw the world in shades of grey, faintly illuminated by each individual's unique aura. Tohru's aura was a blend of colors that never ceased to fascinate Saki. Tohru's energy was a mixture of so many elements that seemed as though they should conflict, yet didn't. Her light spoke of simple delight and profound joy; of deep misery and terrifying loneliness; of eager understanding and ultimate wisdom; of patience, loyalty, honesty, and the purest type of confusion, for which she felt no shame.

Tohru possessed the gift of enjoying the company of her fellow beings without ever judging any of them as less interesting, wonderful, or lovely than another. Because of this, Saki could believe, and sometimes even understand, that someone always thought of her as beautiful, even when she didn't think of herself that way. For Saki, Tohru was her anchor, and the source of her own delight.

Tohru took joy in the simplest of things, and somehow made the most complex matters seem simple in the light of her happiness. One thing that gave Tohru obvious joy was when she was able to give the people she cherished most gifts; presents that would mean something both to the giver and the receiver. So Christmas was one of a few times of the year when Tohru shone with an even greater light than usual, a constant smile on her face. Each present that she lovingly wrapped, chattering absently about what she'd made and who it was for, seemed to shine with the same light. Just sitting next to Tohru while she cut wrapping paper in funny shapes, stuck bows on every box, and hid away every precious gift made Saki feel as though she too had been wrapped with effervescent light...a light that would never die.

Sometimes Saki wished that she could become light herself, and join the cluster of brilliant colors that surrounded Tohru; that she could melt into Tohru and become one with her, seamlessly altering herself into just one of Tohru's endless supply of pure, compassionate emotions.

But trapped in the cage of her own skin, Saki had to be content to sit with Tohru, to talk with her and sometimes touch her hand; to bask in the glow of Tohru's light, and feel herself lifted by the curve of Tohru's smile. If she had had a choice, Saki would never have left Tohru's side.

She looked up, eyes focusing suddenly as she realized Tohru had said something to her, something important enough that Tohru was looking at Saki intently, awaiting a response.

"I'm sorry, Tohru-kun...what did you say?" Saki asked breathlessly.

"I said Merry Christmas, Hana-chan," Tohru said with the same brilliant, luminescent smile.

And as she so rarely did---so rarely that it hurt, that tug of skin against cheekbone---Hanajima Saki smiled.

"Merry Christmas to you too, Tohru-kun."

/I would be nothing without you, Tohru-kun. Merry Christmas./
