Kat pranced down the hallway, deserted on the Saturday morning, as all military personnel were either in a meeting, or had the day off. She, however, had neither, and was happily enjoying her few spare minutes. Her voice echoed in the empty hallway, resounding on the walls and coming back to her, sounding in her ears and reminding her how hard she was trying not to sing well.
She had a wonderful singing voice, yet often chose not to use it. It was just better that way, because otherwise she always had people bugging her to sing for them, or asking her why she chose to be in the military. All they got was a stinging “None of your business, back off,” accompanied with her trademark glare.
Kat wasn't extremely graceful, now, nor very pretty, at least in her retrospect. She had gotten her fair share of cat calls, all brushed off with her fierce glare and a nonchalant flick of her hair. She wasn't the flirty type, but she liked to toy with some particular men, when she a spare moment of course. But of course she never did, Colonel Mustang always made sure of that. Katherine sighed and brushed a stray lock of shoulder length brown hair out of her placid brown eyes and continued her sing-along walk down the hallway.
As she began to draw closer to her room she started to drag her feet, a sudden feeling of extreme fatigue coming over her, and she almost wanted to collapse in front of her door and go to sleep, but then again too many `creative' minded men might get the wrong idea. Kat rolled her shoulders and yawned, unbuttoning her uniform shirt, blue and pristinely pressed, until it hung down around her waist, revealing the also pristinely pressed white t-shirt below. Then she decided to go in, and take a well deserved nap. She lifted her hand to the cool metal of the door knob and turned it, hearing the click, she pushed it open.
And she screamed; a high pitched squeal that could probably shatter glass. On her stool, her stool, sat a man, well more like a boy, her own age, naked from the waist up, reading a book. Of course, he was no longer reading, but staring at her, his golden eyes widened at the pitch of her scream. “What's your problem,” He mumbled, getting up and stretching “Actually, why are you in my room?” He challenged, glaring at her. Kat met his eyes with her own glare and tossed her head defiantly. “This is my room, you're in it, and…” She looked him over again; careful not to let her eyes linger on his bare upper half. “You're a little short to be asking me the questions,” She replied icily.
Nothing prepared her for what happened next, and at first she flinched, but she didn't show any other sign of fear. “Who're you calling a pipsqueak midget!?” He screamed, getting red in the face. Katherine simply took a step forward, and slapped him firmly on the cheek. “Get a grip, I didn't call you a pipsqueak,” She said harshly. He stood there, looking at her blankly. She guessed no one had ever bothered to interrupt him mid-rant, because with the practiced way he had warped her words, Kat was sure he ranted often. “Now then, let's start over, I'm Katherine, but I would very much appreciate if you called me Kat. Your turn,” Her words dared him to challenge her, and with the fiery confidence that sparkled in his golden-yellow eyes, she didn't doubt he would take up her challenge and then return it. “Okay, Katherine,” At this she gritted her teeth, but said nothing, “I would be Edward, the famous Fullmetal Alchemist,” Ed snapped, taking a step closer to her from the stool.
“Oh, really now?” Kat said, “I've never heard of you,” She laughed, but to her dismay found that as he took a step closer, her cheeks flushed. Not only that, but she found that she was only a scant inch or two taller than him, and she really had no right to call him short. Not only did her cheeks flush, she found herself getting uncomfortably warm in his presence, especially him with no shirt on, and she had to take a step back. As she did this, he only took a step closer, and so on until she was back against the door and could go no father back. “You're not making this easy,” She snapped, side stepping. “Don't I know it,” He replied smirking and taking another step forward so that she felt his torso brush hers. “Fine! Fine, you win, okay!?” She screamed, pushing him back so that she could make her way to her bed. She rocked back on her heels and onto the bed, sitting on it and staring over at him coldly. “Thank you,” He replied simply, “Now please leave my room,” He added, gesturing towards the door.
Just then she noticed his right arm flashed in the meager sunlight that spilled in from the small window at the rear of the room. So… that's what gave him his title. She shrugged and yawned. “I think you got it wrong,” She said sleepily, leaning back so her head touched the wall and she could comfortably recline. “This is my room, and you need to leave,” She corrected. Ed gave her a glare that could curdle milk, “No, this is my room, now you leave,” And so it proceeded until voices mounted, and it seemed that the window would indeed crack. Just as Kat was about to reach forward to strangle him, a large metal suit of armor walked into the room, carrying a tray of food. Kat stared dumbly at him, giving Ed the perfect chance. He swiped his non-metallic leg at her own legs, and she fell to the ground. “Ugh… haven't you ever heard of not hitting a girl…?” She mumbled, rolling over onto her hands. Ed stood triumphantly over her, his hands on his hips. “Now get out, girly,” He said coolly, pointing towards the door with his metal hand, which the metal suited person (at least this was how Kat perceived him) was currently still blocking. “Brother,” Groaned the armor.
“Brother…?” Kat said curiously, more to herself than anyone else. “Stop beating on the poor girl,” Alphonse said putting down the food and walking over to Kat, as if to help her up. “I… can take care of myself…” She said, picking up a hand that had been spread on the floor to keep her body up. She supported herself with one hand, and punched his left leg, what followed was very un-Kat like.
“Dammit!” She screamed, falling down and clutching her hand, which was quickly becoming black and blue. “What the hell!?” Quickly followed, and she wrenched his right pant leg up with her good hand, which was hard to do, considering it was leather, and refused to move. The glint of metal confirmed her suspicions, and she went back to writhing on the ground, clutching her hand. Ed frowned slightly and nudged her ribs with the toe of his boot. “Hmph. Take her to the infirmary, Al, I don't have time for this,” He spat, going back to the stool and picking up his book. Ed walked over to the small bed and lay down, beginning to read again. “Damn you! What's your problem, this is your fault, and… and… and… this is my room!” She ended, squirming as Al tried to
help her up.
When she found she couldn't get out of his grasp she yelled the first thing that came to her mind, which at the time she would not have known how effective it would be. “Look! A dying kitten!” She screamed, pointing out the window. She heard what sounded like a muffled gasp coming from inside the armor, and then she was dropped as the suit of armor rushed off. Kat sighed and wiped her brow with her free hand, sitting up from the floor to see Ed staring at her. “What's your problem?” She said, crudely mocking his voice. Ed glared at her and sat up, “Now, get out.” He said the tone of his voice very serious. Kat stood up and held back a scream rage, which would have probably resulted in his murder, but instead she simply turned, and calmly walked out the
door, and down the hall.
