Vernon’s Year 4 classmates mocked the disheveled clothes he wore to school.  Dad’s benders created chaos in a variety of ways.  Lately, his rages left Mum so sad and tired that she refused to leave her bed.  This placed the burden of household duties on his and Marge’s shoulders. 

They tried their best to cook meals, clean the house, and keep up with laundry; however, the latter chore often fell to the wayside.  Dad didn’t care if they wore rags, he’d told them as much, but he expected swept floors and a hot supper when he bothered to come home.
