Vernon pulverized Marvin Drinkwater after classes one mild spring day.  He justified the beating as self-defense.  Marvin kept stealing his pencils, firing spitballs into his hair, copying his test papers, and calling him a dunce (when it turned out that using his answers was maybe a poor decision).

When Marvin approached him at the gate, talking filth and flicking his ear, that was enough.  Three things stayed with him from that day: one, the sickening crunch of cartilage collapsing under impact; two, the gurgled shriek his tormentor unleashed; and three, the horror in his mum’s eyes when she found out.
