Vernon’s father died whilst he attended Smeltings Academy.  The headmaster summoned him to the front office to deliver the news; it was the best-worst information he’d ever received.  Ding-dong, the wicked wastrel was dead.

The autopsy confirmed what Marge suspected: cirrhosis of the liver. Thankfully, their father hadn’t succeeded in pissing away all the family fortune, but only just. After the funeral, Marge sat him down and they discussed what to do with the house that had never felt like home.

“I guess arson isn’t an option?”

“No, insurers frown on that sort of thing.”

“Damn and blast.”

“Amen, brother.”
