Chapter Five:

Deception

~*~

Her eyes widened, mouth falling open in utter shock as she stared off into space, one hand loosely gripping the cloth that covered her damp body. The cold breeze brushed her bare calves as she continued to drip water on the porch.

"Kikyou…you didn't…" Why would Kikyou do this? It was so unlike her!

The miko in question looked up at her, as if startled.

"You deserve it," she said in a slightly warmer tone than what Kagome was used to.

"But…you wouldn't…not ever…" Kikyou stood up, mouth twisted in a frown, hands on her hips.

"What is so wrong about me laying out a futon for you?"

"But…I mean…you shouldn't…oh!"

"I decided to call it a truce. We might as well get along. I thought about what you said earlier." Kikyou failed at smiling, as if the action was foreign to her, and it probably was.

"I'm…uh…" Kagome muttered unintelligently. "I have no idea what to say!"

"We have to try and forge a relationship if this master-slave thing is ever going to work out." Why had Kikyou had this revelation all of the sudden? Did inspiration fall out of the sky and onto her lap? It sure seemed so. Kikyou was now acting kind and…warm, though it still seemed as if that steely expression was permanently glued to her face.

"Well sure! I'm…I'm willing to try!" Kagome was stilling struggling to find words. She was at a loss. Kikyou wanted to start over from scratch? Her gaze instantly darted down to the cool necklace that lay around her neck. "Could you take this off then?" Kikyou shook her head.

"Only Inuyasha can remove your necklace, but I can change it spell. It'll still be awkward, but not as painful." Kikyou closed her eyes and snapped her fingers; a blue orb of light lifted from her hand and was instantly absorbed by the necklace.

"What did you do?" Kagome wondered aloud. Kikyou failed at smiling once again.

"You'll see. Talk with Inuyasha tomorrow."

"We're allowed to talk now?"

"Yes. Now come in, it's getting cold and you must be freezing." Kikyou ushered Kagome inside. This whole Kikyou nice thing was still new to her and she hadn't quite adjusted to it. Kikyou was acting as if Kagome had been her sister for years…and they hadn't even known each other for two weeks yet! Where was the mean, spiteful, jealous, cold, evil woman who had traded something for her at the "slave markets?" That frigid ice queen who insulted her and made her feel like crap? Where did she go? Was Kikyou acting as if that had never happened or…

Oh, my head is spinning! I'm so confused!

"I'll give you some clothes. You simply cannot wear those disgusting, smelly rags, especially since you're so clean! I'll give you some clothes and I'll get some fresh undergarments from the seamstress tomorrow. You're about my size aren't you?"

This was all too much too soon! Kikyou wasn't being cold. Kikyou was trying (note trying) to be warm. She offered her a futon! She was going to get her new clothes and underwear! Where in the world did this come from?

Kagome didn't understand the "new" Kikyou one bit, but she was determined to figure her out.

Inuyasha was thoroughly surprised when the two girls walked down the hill, chatting as if they had been friends from the very beginning. He sensed something funny in Kikyou's scent, but he couldn't put a finger on it. It was strange and the bitter smell puzzled him. Kikyou didn't usually have that fragrance mixed in with her crisp scent of cold, icy springs.

The hanyou sat perched up on a fairly low branch on a nearby tree, long silvery hair billowing in the wind, hands tucked away in his long sleeves as he regarded the girls curiously. What exactly was going on here?

"Inuyasha. Kagome. You both have a very important job today," Kikyou said. Inuyasha's ears flicked forwards with slight interest. When had Kikyou started calling his slave by her name? So that was her name? He shrugged. Not like he cared any.

"What is it Kikyou?" Kagome asked.

"I would like for you and Inuyasha to bond while I set up for your first miko lesson." Kagome spun around to face the older girl, eyebrows raised.

"A m-miko lesson? But why?!" Kikyou smiled that creepy, secretive grin once more. Kagome shuddered.

"I have decided that all miko's need training lessons. You could become a potential danger to Inuyasha and myself." Inuyasha swallowed. Was Kagome actually that powerful? And more importantly…

"Why do I get stuck with her?" he whined. Kagome turned around abruptly, eyes narrowed in anger, lips twisted in a cute little pout. Inuyasha noticed that she looked different…many cleaner was the word and definitely prettier. Hey! Where did that come from? Inuyasha growled at himself in annoyance before flicking his ears against his skull. He could barely spend a few seconds with the girl without getting annoyed. With Kikyou they could sit in each other's embrace in silence for hours and hours and he would never tire of her company.

Kikyou looked slightly annoyed with his outburst.

"She is your slave. Besides, if you do this for me, you will get a special treat."

"Treat?" Inuyasha envisioned delicious food, a warm spot in front of the fire inside of her hut, and a late midnight stroll along the moonlit lake. He missed spending time with Kikyou without his bothersome slave sticking her nose into his business. Inuyasha liked his privacy and that was that.

"Yes. Now I must set up. Work on your relationship." With that she walked off.

Inuyasha glared at Kagome from his spot on the branch while she looked straight back at him. She coughed and twiddled her thumbs for a while rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet as she hummed. Kagome was able to pull off that stunt for a minute before Inuyasha yelled at her.

"Jeez! Do you ever shut up?" Kagome sighed.

"I guess you're making me uncomfortable. What with the glaring and all." Inuyasha smirked.

"Whatever. I'll give you a call the day I care. Okay?" Kagome glowered at him.

"Some bonding, eh?"

"I'm not going to bond with a useless wench like you."

"I'm not useless! I can chop firewood, clean, cook…"

"You're still useless compared to Kikyou."

"What if I don't want to be compared with Kikyou?" she asked snippily.

"Who the hell told you that I care?"

"Jeez! Potty mouth. What crawled up your butt and died?" Inuyasha growled.

"I'm your master! Don't you dare speak to me that way!" Kagome glared at him, folding her arms over her chest. They competed in a fierce staring contest until Kagome finally blinked.

"What the heck is wrong with you, you arrogant idiot?" Inuyasha's face reddened with anger and his thick eyebrows narrowed. Before he could stop himself, he yelled:

"STAY!" Kagome gasped as her legs began to lock up. Inuyasha's mouth opened in shock. Within a few seconds, Kagome's legs seemed as if they were cemented to the ground, while her top body twisted every which way, as if she were struggling to get free.

"Hey! What the heck…" It wasn't a painful sensation, it was just…odd.

"Wha?" Kagome refused to speak to him until the blood returned to her legs as she could move them. She sighed, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

"Kikyou changed the spell for me. She thought it was inhumane. Like any sensible person would." Her small hands instantly snapped around her necklace. "Why am I stuck with this piece of junk?" Inuyasha ignored her.

"Why would Kikyou change the spell?"

"I told you she was warming up to me, dummy," she chuckled.

"Stay." Kagome's legs froze and refused to be budged. She pulled at her calf, trying to pry her feet from the ground, but to no avail.

"Hey! That stings you jerk!"

"Stay."

"Ow!" Inuyasha cackled manically. He now had power that he wished to use. He could make the stupid wench freeze any time he wished. When the feeling finally rushed back into her legs, Kagome growled at him.

"I hate you."

"What makes you think I care?"

"Some bonding."

"Kagome did amazingly well for her first lesson," Kikyou said.

"Why are you helping her all of the sudden? It seems suspicious too me. The slave thinks something is up, too. She didn't say so, but I could tell."

"Why can't I just be nice? Don't you like the new me?" Inuyasha's grip tightened around her waist as he pulled her against him. He nuzzled her hair, breathing with relief as he felt her smaller hand close around his. Kikyou sighed as Inuyasha kissed her lips softly and began to nibble delicately on her ear. She missed these times with him. Even if he was her slave. Ever since Kagome came, it seemed as if all of his attention was focused on her. But Kikyou was positive he was paying attention only to her now.

Kikyou wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him again. The moonlight peeked in from between the thick willow trees and cascaded down on their forms, bathing them in silvery moonlight. Inuyasha nipped lightly at her jaw before kissing her again. Kikyou broke the kiss and smiled at him, cheeks flushed.

This was how it was when they first started going together. Kikyou seemed so much sweeter and angelic in the beginning, but as time went on she hardened and became cold. Only occasionally could Inuyasha break her shell and get her to soften up to him. Now was one of those times.

Was it because of his slave? So much seemed to be centered around the irritating human that it was getting annoying.

Kikyou's abrupt change was the slave's fault, too. What was the miko planning? What tricks did she have up her sleeve? Inuyasha inhaled her crisp scent of an early autumn breeze and sighed deeply. Whatever it was, it would have to wait for now. Inuyasha was too involved in how good Kikyou fit against him, and how soft and sweet her lips were to think about anything else. That was more important that her schemes and fake façade. At least for now.

"I said, do you like the new me?" Inuyasha stared off into the distance, over to the large, pool of inky black water that was stroked lightly by the faint touches of the moon's glow. He bit his lip.

"It's too…sudden to tell. Kikyou what are you trying to prove?" She kissed his cheek softly and smiled against his skin.

"Inuyasha you must know me better than that. We have known each other for so long…" He was shocked. Usually if he said something so...so daring, he would have been harshly reprimanded…maybe even slapped. Now all she did was giggle and flirt shamelessly while kissing him.

"I do know you well, but this isn't like you." He gulped as she began kissing along his jaw. "Kikyou…tell me…"

"There is no secret. I am telling you the truth." Kikyou nuzzled his neck, licking his chin while snuggling against him. Inuyasha fought to control his raging hormones and the loud blood thundering through his veins. This was strange and it was going too fast. He stood up abruptly. Kikyou followed and reattached herself to his arm. "Inuyasha…"

He tenderly withdrew himself from her tight grasp.

"Part of our relationship is not to keep secrets." He tried to look fierce.

"I am not keeping any secrets." Inuyasha looked at her in what seemed to be disgust. He began marching away from her, loud footsteps muffled by the billowing grass. "Wait! Inuyasha!"

"You said a while back that you weren't allowed to tell lies." And that was the last she heard of him before he disappeared into a tree.

Kikyou cursed under her breath, eyes tapering into thin slits. She glared out across the dark lake, body trembling with anger. She combed her pale hands through her hair without hitting a snag, and chewed her lip with renewed determination.

"Fine. Inuyasha may not have fallen for my tricks. But that gullible slave will!"

I am SO sorry for the long wait. With the end of the school year right around the corner, I've been bogged down with so much homework and responsibilities that I haven't even had time to THINK about writing, much less actually drag my butt onto the computer. This chapter isn't very long, but I hope you liked it. It took me so long to complete and besides my lack of time, I had a huge HUGE case of old-fashioned writer's block. That's why the good writing tapers in the middle and picks up near the end.

Here are a few questions that have not been answered:

What is Kikyou's plan? What is the point of training Kagome? Why was Inuyasha so angry with Kikyou when he is usually so nice to her? Will Kagome's prayer beads ever get removed? Will this turn out to be another crappy romance story?
