Where to Find More Detailed Instructions

=========================================================
This Readme file is not intended to provide detailed instructions
for using your new electronic dictionary and thesaurus, but the
program includes several references that do provide that
information. To learn more about your new electronic references
and how to use them, see one of the following:

* HELP WITHIN THE PROGRAM:
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus includes an
easy-to-use help system that likely contains answers to any
questions you may encounter about using the program; it also
provides details about the kinds of information that can be found
in the dictionary and thesaurus, and about the typographical
conventions used to display the information on-screen. To use
the program's Help system, click on the Help menu and choose either
the Contents and Index (Windows), Help contents (Macintosh), or
Search for help on option to locate the information you want.

* ON-SCREEN (ROLLOVER) HELP:
In addition to the general HELP system, this program offers
on-screen instructions that will appear in the status bar at the
bottom of the program screen when you roll your cursor over key
parts of the user interface.

* PRINTABLE USER'S GUIDE ON THE CD-ROM:
On the CD-ROM, you will find an electronic document called
guide.pdf that contains a printable user's guide you can
use to help you learn to use the program.

The easiest way to locate this file is to put the CD-ROM
in the appropriate drive, then double-click on the drive
icon. You should see the guide.pdf file in the file list.
If you still have trouble finding the file, use your
computer's Search or Find tool to locate it on the CD.

You must use the Adobe Acrobat(R) Reader software to open
and use the guide.pdf file. A copy of the Adobe software is
included on the CD-ROM.

* EXPLANATORY NOTES:
Within the program's HELP system (accessible from the Help
menu) are sections called Dictionary Explanatory Notes and
Thesaurus Explanatory Notes that describe the text-display
conventions (e.g., bold, italics, abbreviations) that are
used in the dictionary and thesaurus.

* ONLINE FAQ:
You can find a list of frequently asked questions related to
this program on Merriam-Webster's Web site at
http://www.merriam-webster.com/service/collegiatefaq.htm.

=========================================================

Registering Your Dictionary

=========================================================
Registering your dictionary helps Merriam-Webster provide better
technical support and makes it possible to inform you about new
software developments. Please register your copy of Merriam-Webster's
Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus, Deluxe Audio Edition today. You can
register either by filling out and returning the registration card
included in the software package or by using the online registration
option. To use the online registration option, select the Register
this Product option from the Go Online menu. Note that you must
have Internet access and a Web browser (such as Netscape 4.6 or
Internet Explorer 5.0) to register online.

=========================================================

Overriding Windows AutoPlay

=========================================================
This program takes advantage of the Windows AutoPlay feature
to make installation easier. If you wish to avoid having
AutoPlay start each time you insert the CD-ROM, hold down
the SHIFT key when you insert the CD.

=========================================================

Listening to Audio Pronunciations

=========================================================
The edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary on this
CD-ROM includes thousands of audio pronunciations in recorded
speech to enable you to hear the most commonly used pronunciations
for English words. All entries with pronunciations appear in
blue. To hear a pronunciation, double-click on a blue word.

For the blue links to appear and the audio pronunciations to
work, the dictionary program must be able to access the audio
files. Either the CD-ROM must be in the drive or you must
install the audio database on your computer's hard drive to use the
audio feature of the program. During installation, you will be asked
to decide whether to keep the audio files on the CD or install
them on your hard drive.

You can move the audio files from the CD to the hard drive after
the initial installation by rerunning the install program. If
you prefer, you can move the audio files from the CD to your
hard drive without rerunning the installer by following the
steps below.

1. Use your computer's Search or Find tool to find the files
the files named sound.ndx and sound.cmp on the dictionary
CD-ROM.

2. In the folder where you installed this program, locate the
folder named "Books." Inside that folder, find another folder
named C10. Paste sound.ndx and sound.cmp into the C10 folder.

3. Close the folder C10 and the folder Books and return to the
main folder where the dictionary is installed (by default,
that folder is Program Files > Merriam-Webster). Find the file
named C10.dct.

4. Open the file named C10.dct using your computer's NotePad (Win)
or the Simple Text reader (Mac) program.

5. Find the line sound_dir=CD:.\books\C10\ in that file. This line
tells the program where to look for the audio files for the
dictionary. It includes the letter name of the drive where the
files are stored and the names of the folders that must be
opened to access the sound.cmp and sound.ndx files.

6. Modify this line, changing the "CD" to the letter name of your hard
drive. You can leave the rest of the line unchanged.

7. Save the C10.dct file and close it.

The dictionary should now be able to access the audio files
from your hard drive.

=========================================================

Macros for Accessing Windows Word Processors

=========================================================
Macros are small companion programs that are included with this
program to make it easy to look up words from within your word
processor. Macros are included that allow you to put a dictionary
lookup button on the toolbar of either Microsoft(R) Word (Word 95 or
higher) or Corel WordPerfect (R) (version 9.0 or higher).

During installation, you will be given a choice which macro(s) to
install; you can also elect not to install any macros. The
installer should automatically detect which word processor version
you are using. If it cannot find a compatible word processor,
a screen will appear asking you to indicate where your word
processor is installed.

In some cases, the installer may fail to locate your properly
installed version of Microsoft Word 95 or 97. A dialog box will
appear asking you to locate the program. The default installation
path for those programs is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

After locating your word processing program, the installer will
add a button to the appropriate toolbar of Microsoft Word; if no
toolbar button appears, contact technical support for assistance
(see below for contact information).

After the dictionary installation is complete, WordPerfect users
will need to run a special helper macro within WordPerfect to finish
the dictionary macro setup. To do so, follow these instructions:

WordPerfect's helper macros establish a link to
Merriam-Webster's Dictionary Lookup Macro. The helper macros are
named AddMWtoToolbar.wmc and AddMWtoToolsmenu.wmc. To run a helper
macro in WordPerfect, choose Macro > Play from the Tools menu, then
select the appropriate macro to play. If you select
AddMWtoToolbar.wmc, an icon will be added to your top toolbar. If you
select AddMWtoToolmenu.wmc, an item will be added to your Tools menu.
Either one will add an icon that looks like a cassette tape to the
appropriate menu.

Note: each time you run either of the AddMWto... macros another
button will be added. We recommend running each of them only once.

After the macro button is installed in your word processor, you can
use it by placing your cursor in a word and clicking the button. This
will bring up the dictionary. If the dictionary was open in the
background before you clicked the macro button, the word containing
the cursor will be looked up automatically. If it was not, click the
macro button a second time (after the dictionary opens) to look up
the word.

================================================================

M-W Link for Macintosh

================================================================
M-W Link is a small companion program that allows Mac users to
quickly access the dictionary from other programs. M-W Link is
an extension that is loaded into the Extensions folder of your
computer when you install the dictionary.

Before you can use M-W Link, you will need to configure it so it
can find the dictionary on your computer. To do so, navigate to
the folder where you installed the dictionary and find the M-W Link
icon and double-click on it. Use the Browse button to find the
dictionary (i.e., to set the correct application location), then
click Apply to save your changes.

After you have saved your changes, you must restart your computer
to load the new Extension configuration into your computer's
System folder.

Once M-W Link is correctly configured, you can use it to quickly
open the dictionary from your other programs. To use it, simply
highlight a word on the screen and press the M-W Link hot key
combination (the default hot keys are COMMAND + CONTROL + D).
The dictionary should open automatically.

For more detailed instructions on using M-W Link, click on the
Help menu of the program and choose the M-W Link section from
the Table of Contents.

=========================================================

Windows Screen Resolution

=========================================================

If you use a Windows screen resolution must be set to 600 x 800
or higher for this program to function properly. To reset your
screen resolution, right click on your Windows desktop and choose
Properties from the menu that appears. Click on the Settings tab
in the dialog box that appears and move the slider to the 600 x 800
setting.

=========================================================

Font Issues

=========================================================
All of the fonts needed to view the special characters in the
dictionary should be installed along with the dictionary program.
In rare cases, your computer may fail to recognize these fonts
unless you restart your computer after the dictionary installation
is complete. The dictionary's installation program should prompt you
to restart your computer after it has finished adding the dictionary
files to your hard drive.

If the special dictionary symbols do not display correctly after
restarting, you may need to install the fonts manually. To do so,
follow these steps:

************************
WINDOWS
*************************
1. Place the dictionary CD in the appropriate drive, then
click the computer's Start button and choose Settings >
Control Panel.

2. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Fonts icon.

3. In the Control Panel, double-click on the Fonts icon.

4. When the Fonts folder opens, choose Install New Font from
its File menu.

5. In the "Drives" drop-down box, choose your CD drive.

6. Locate the Fonts folder on the CD and click on it.

7. A list of the fonts needed for the program will appear
in the "List of fonts" window. When they do, click the
"Select All" button, then the "Add" or "OK" button.

The special fonts needed for the dictionary will then be
installed on your computer.

************************
MACINTOSH
*************************
1. Place the dictionary CD in the appropriate drive.

2. Find and open the folder named "Fonts" on the CD.

3. Drag the fonts to your computer's System folder.

4. If your computer asks if you want to place the fonts
in the "Fonts" folder, say yes.

The special fonts needed for the dictionary will then be
installed on your computer.

=========================================================

Very Long Results Lists

=========================================================
Many searches in the dictionary and thesaurus can produce
very long results lists. To prevent your computer from using
too many resources when attempting to display very long
results lists, you may find that the results of a search you
have run are truncated.

Try making your search more specific to obtain shorter
results lists.

=========================================================
