Inescapable Destinies
Chapter three
Last Time
In fact the entire place seemed ethereal; it just was so unbelievably beautiful that she thought it was too good to be true. She looked around and finally acknowledged two other presences. She looked around and spotted one of them, there lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood lay Sesshomaru.
Now
She stood rooted to the ground as she looked upon the Taiyoukai, the one who had stood proudly and confidently before her so many times before. She saw in her mind the many times he had put not only her life, but her friend's lives on the line. And now she looked at that same proud Taiyoukai, but she didn't see the proud Taiyoukai. What she saw was a man who was at this moment losing his life in such a beautiful place. A man whose life she could save, who she could prevent from going into nirvana. This place was not meant for death or any of those melancholy things; it was meant for life and happiness. And she was not about to let herself be the one to ruin that. She would not let him die, not here or anywhere. She felt so strongly about this that it scared her to no ends.
What about her friends? Were they looking for her or worrying about her right now? Sure lately they had been very hard on her, but I mean that wasn't on purpose! They still cared for her right? They didn't just think of her as someone who they needed to do their chores or find the Shikon no Kakera, right? They couldn't, not after all she had done for them! Then so many things flew into her head that it gave her one of the worst headaches she ever had. `Ugh! Not now, I don't have time for this! I'll just think about these things after I heal Sesshomaru. Yeah that's it, I will heal him, to get yet another duty of mine out of the way, and then think about everything later! But there are so many things to think about that I might not be in this peaceful place anymore by then. So I guess I will have to think and work, sigh.'
Then there came that other presence again, it was as if it was watching her every move, but it oddly felt relaxing having that other person around. So once again she let it slide to the back of her mind and set off to check on Sesshomaru to see what herbs she would need. But she was surprised to already see all the herbs right there, as if growing off of his own spilled blood. And the thing was that all the blood that had been pooling around him was gone now, the ground around him was still moist from it but it was like it had been absorbed! “This is getting weirder and weirder by the second! I mean how did we even get here? And who brought us here? Kami-sama, there are so many questions that need answers right now, I just wish some one could give me some answers…” and as if answering her prayers, which they were, not one but two other people came out of the bushes.
But she had started to tend to Sesshomaru's wounds with some items that had somehow appeared before her, but hey she wasn't asking questions! So while she bent over his figure, removing the top half of his kimono and moving his weapons to the side, she didn't notice the two people on the outskirts of the forest. She didn't even notice them staring into her back intensely, as if summing her up. She quickly grabbed a bowl that had presented itself to her, and went to the small creek to get some water. When she returned she looked over the body briefly to see what exactly she had to clean, and then picked up the washcloth dipped it in the water and started to clean his wounds.
As she dabbed at them, so as not to harm him in his sleep, she couldn't help but feel guilty. She felt guilty because of the stub where his left arm should be, guilty because she had never really given him a chance to get to know her, although he never would have wanted to. But still she had given everyone else a chance to get to know her, even if they had attacked her. It was just in her nature not to hate someone, friend or foe. Some perfect examples were Kikyou and Naraku. She couldn't hate Kikyou because she loved or `loves' Inuyasha just like she does. She understands what it feels like to love someone, and then to lose that person because of distrust. `Just like I did my father… ugh! What am I thinking! Happy thoughts Kagome, happy thoughts! But still, no one has ever asked what happened to my father, and at first I was glad. But I mean don't they even care? Now I just have to let it out. To let everything out…'
And Naraku, the truth was she didn't hate him either. She never had a reason to, what she did hate was his methods. His methods yes, but not him. She felt guilty all over again; she should hate him, not ever want to regret hurting him. Because every time she did manage to hurt him she felt guilty. And that in turn made her feel guilty, she should care about his pain just as much as he does others. But she couldn't hate him, she cared for everyone, and she wasn't about to let her own mind make her do other wise.
As she went back to concentrating on tending to his wounds she could feel her guilt and sadness engulf her. She didn't want to think anymore she didn't want to be sad anymore. So she did the same thing she always does when she doesn't want to think, she buried herself in her current task. She had to keep cleaning the wounds for a good 36 minutes, because they just didn't want to stop bleeding, and Sesshomaru was beginning to look deathly white. She was really starting to panic, but it finally slowed down to a little trickle every so often. She then grabbed some bandages and pushed him up into a sitting position so she could wrap him up in the bandages before settling him back on the ground.
“Good, I thought that would never be over. Now all I have to do is make the paste, tea, and some extra herbal extract for the wounds, just in case. Now, do I have the necessary items to do this? Well I can go look for the wood, I can use one of the bowls as a little pot by propping it up on some more sticks. Then I have the creek for water and I know how to use my hands for anything else, so I am set!” So she set off to get what little she needed to gather in the forest.
The two figures watched the girl the entire time, never once taking their eyes off her. They were to wait for the `final one' to come before they made any noticeable movement. They both knew the girl well, they both have a special link to her, but the `final one' had the strongest link with her. They never knew how they were linked but they were. They had never heard or seen the `final one' before and were eager to see `em. But right now the girl was their main focus. She would be the one that frees this world from all of its worries. They still did not know how, but it was her duty to do so. She was so loyal to everyone that it was no wonder why she was chosen for this.
And even Sesshomaru had a part to play in this. They were not too happy to see the condition he had arrived in today, but they knew that with Kagome around he would be fine. When she returned and finished fixing him the `final one' would have been there to tell them what exactly is going on right now. And so he was, for as soon as Kagome entered the other edge of the forestry he appeared. Funny they always thought he would be a she, oh well. But they watched as he came up to them with a smile that could match Kagome's smiles.
“Ano… do you happen to be the `final one'? If so we have been awaiting your orders for quite sometime now.”
“The `final one' you say? Hai, that is what they call me but my name is… well at the moment that does not matter. Just refer to me as whatever you wish. But at the moment you must make your presence known. You will answer all her questions and ask as many as you wish. That will be all for today.” As he was speaking the two women were looking at him taking him in.
He had raven black hair that went up to his mid-back in a low ponytail, beautiful blue depths, and perfectly sculpted eyebrows. His face was chiseled and had a firmly set jaw. His jaw-line curved up to meet with his ears, which in their own way were just perfect. His nose was small on his masculine face, but was in no way ugly. But the most stunning part of him was his eyes. You could look into them and get lost in them, but if you looked hard enough, all you could see was a sea of regret, betrayal, longing, fear, and the most prominent, love. Love for what they could not decipher, but it was a lingering love for something. Or someone…
But they had to snap themselves out of this or they would never get what was needed to get done, done. “Hai, we will set out on our duty now, Otou-san.” She saw him shot a smile at her and then he turned on his heals and walked off back into the never-ending forestry. Her melodic voice had seemed so simple compared to his, it had seemed like it was nothing, or like the squeak of a mouse. No wonder he was above all of them, he was so… perfect. But then you would look at those sad sapphire orbs, those seas of nothing but melancholy emotions…
“Ano… Midoriko? Are you ready? We really should be going already; she can be back anytime now. In fact there she is now fixing the things! Oh Kami-sama! Come on, we have to go talk to her so she can get back to her friends and duties. Umm… what were we supposed to do? I am so nerves now, I don't want to fail Otou-san on the first thing he tells us to do!” Midoriko couldn't help but feel relieved of her problems with her friend's antics. It was very funny how she looked breathing in and out deeply to calm down her beating heart. She couldn't stop it, as they walked out of the edge of the forest she burst into a fit of laughter…
When Kagome had gotten all the wood she thought she would need she returned to the side of the field where Sesshomaru lay and set to making the fire. Once the wood was in a beautiful burst of dancing flames she set to making the paste with the right herbs and boiled the water as she did so. The paste was done in a matter of seconds, she was very much used to the icky feeling it gave off and making it. I mean she was the one that was usually left untouched at the end of a battle; she was the one to tend to everyone. So she started to apply the paste to his body to ease away the left over pain. Just when she finished and the water started to boil, she heard a burst of pure laughter coming from one edge of the clearing. She quickly turned her head to see what the cause was of the sudden disturbance to her peace and was met with quite the sight.
There stood two very beautiful women, one ningen and one youkai. The ningen had long midnight-black hair that reached passed her butt. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of brown and held wisdom beyond even most noble youkai's. But they also had a tender look to them. Her face was a sight to behold with her perfectly high cheek bones, her pale, smooth, and flawless skin which accented her eyes. Then there was her perfect nose, which was feminine and looked so delicate with its petite size that you thought you might break it if you touched it. Her lips were full and a soft pink color and looked even more beautiful when showing off her perfectly white teeth and that beautiful smile. Her body was also put to perfection, as the clothes she was wearing did not make you think otherwise. She had full round breasts and the perfect amount of curves. Her legs were shapely and long and you could see by the slits up the side of her skirt. All in all, she was one of the most beautiful ningens you would ever see.
Then comes the youkai-onna, who was also very beautiful, that seemed to be an Inu-youkai by the looks of her aura. She had long, silky silver hair that went down to her knees and had a few curls in it every so often. Her face was quite similar to that of the ningen, perfect, except her eyes were more a cross of silver and gold. It made you think of a beautiful sunset on a small pond. Her curves were just as defined as the ningen if not more. And her breasts were a bit bigger and rounder since she was an Inu-youkai. She had a look on her face that seemed to be for a caring and understanding person, who at the right times, knew when to play and when to be serious. Right now she was being playful and had a fake pout on her face. But there was something familiar about both these women.
“Ano… I hope I am not interrupting but do I know either of you? I know I have seen you both somewhere before…” when she was at the end of her sentence she trailed off as if thinking and that was exactly what she was doing. She was going through all the events with her and the inu-tachi in her mind when she stopped at one when Sango was barley joining the group. There was a statue of a beautiful Warrior miko by the name of Midoriko whose body was encased in stone and soul was trapped in the Shikon No Tama. Yes this was the same Midoriko, and she was almost sure that the youkai was related to someone she knew, she didn't know how but she did, yet again. “You must be the Warrior miko Midoriko whose soul is now in the Shikon No Tama, and you…” her thoughts were interrupted by a slight moan of pain, she immediately looked over to Sesshomaru and saw… the same features that the inu-youkai has! Now she was truly surprised, not only is she meeting Midoriko, but also the person that could quite possibly be Sesshomaru's okaa-san! Her eyes went wide and her mouth was agape as she gasped and just stared at the two women honoring her with their presence.
But there was still something nagging at the back of her mind… why had she only sensed Sesshomaru and Midoriko, because she surely did not feel the inu-youkai until right now. A look of confusion passed through her face as the two women who were now serious walked towards her. And as if sensing a question the inu-youkai answered, “Hai, my dear, she is who you believe. And I am pretty sure you would like know who I am, do you not?” She waited for her nod but instead got a shake of the head and listened as she replied. “Iie, I am almost positive that you are Sesshomaru's okaa-san, ne? But why did I only sense one presence when I got here? Why didn't I feel your aura? This is so confusing! Why are we here, and who brought us? Aren't you both dead? UGH! I can't take this!”
“Calm down Kagome-san. We will answer your questions but it seems your patient is beginning to awake.” Kagome quickly shot a glance at the still nameless inu-youkai and saw a motherly look of concern and relief flood through her face. It really touched her to see someone care so much for someone like Sesshomaru. So she quickly went over to him to see how he was doing and saw him begin to open his eyes slowly. When she kneeled down by his side she could see him blink a few times before putting on his cold façade and looking at her rather harshly. The look made her wince a bit but she brushed it off. She had to be cheery if she was going to look at another day.
“Ohaiyo, Sesshomaru-sama! Are you feeling better now? I hope so because then that means that you were worst than I though you were.” A look of pure concern crossed her face and he scowled at her. He did not need for a lowly ningen onna to feel concerned for him. He, Sesshomaru needed nobody and he needed nothing. But he had to admit he was feeling better than he ever had. “How about I get you something to eat? Would you like that?” She said once again brushing off the look of pure hate and contempt he gave her.
Sesshomaru couldn't take it, she was being too nice to him, and she was probably going to ask for something because she has done all this for him. “Bitch, what is it that you want from this Sesshomaru? None of you greedy ningens do something without wanting something that you want. You bitch are no better, so wipe that fake smile and look of concern off your face.” He watched with satisfaction as she did as he told here but he was shocked to now see a sad and angry face.
Kagome felt like she was going to cry! Here she had saved his life and probably lost her friends trust because of it, and he accused her of such vile things! She could feel her lower lip tremble slightly. She tried to hold in her anger and how hurt she was with his accusations, but she couldn't and she let him have a piece of her mind, and if was going to see one of her emotions then he would see anger above anything else. “You jerk! I came and saved your life while my friends now most likely don't trust me because of it and you come and throw it in my face! Well, let me tell you I did want something! I wanted you to get better because I couldn't stand the thought of you or anyone for that matter dieing! But if you are going to be such an asshole about it just forget it. I just wanted to be nice to help you after everything you have gone through because of me and Inuyasha! But just forget about any of it, ok? Just forget…” but she now knew she should have never said a thing. Her hand quickly went to cover her mouth as if that could erase what she just said.
As soon as she looked back up she could feel herself pinned to the floor with a clawed hand wrapped around her throat. She couldn't breathe and she could feel Sesshomaru let his acid drip and burn her skin. It hurt like hell! She started to claw at his hand to futilely try to pry it off. Her eyes were beginning to be surrounded by darkness and she felt like she was becoming weak; he dug his nails into her skin and was letting his acid go right through to her veins. Her hands fell limp at her sides as the darkness started to consume her. But then as if it were Kami-sama himself she could feel Sesshomaru being pried off of her and someone yelling, “Sesshomaru!” But her eyes gave out on her, she couldn't see anymore because the darkness had taken her, and she felt numb.
He had been enveloped in peaceful warmth. He had felt at peace, like all his duties and problems had been taken from him, like they didn't have to be his burden anymore. And he liked it, he liked not having to worry about one thing or another. Even as a child he had many duties; he had never had one moment to himself, where he could just be himself. But now, he could feel what it felt like, to be free of duties, to be free of pressure, annoying toads, and ningens.
He could escape it all, and he didn't mind one bit. The only time he had to himself was when he was sleeping, and even then he dreamt about all his problems. It was quite annoying really, to not be at peace for one moment in life. It was annoying to have to work all your life for something you can never reach, that you can never have. First as a child he worked to get his fathers praise… that never happened. Then as an adolescent he worked to figure out how his father could love a ningen so much as to forget his mother. His mother who had been so caring and beautiful to all that she crossed, so… perfect. Once again, though, he would never know. Then when his father died he had sought out someone who could potentially be a mate to him… never did he find that potential person. Then he sought to kill Inuyasha and keep the Tessaigia for himself… and he still has not accomplished that feat. Now he sought to awaken to a newly recovered body… but he could still not open his eyes.
He could hear people talking around him about what he wasn't sure, but he could hear them there. He was starting to will himself to open his eyes again, and this time he could feel them starting listen to his commands. He slowly opened them, partially to prevent his eyes from being blinded, partially because that is as fast as they would go. As soon as he opened his eyes he saw the girl who had just been trying to save him, or at least he hoped it was just now. When he heard her start to blabber about him in what he could only take as false concern, he could feel his temper start to rise. She thinks he is stupid enough to believe that she is concerned for her enemy? Ha! That is a laugh… none is caring enough to do such a thing, none except his deceased mother.
He could feel his anger rise even more when she dared to speak to him in that tone. `If this bitch is so willing to die, then allow this Sesshomaru to do the honors…' and before he knew it he had his hand wrapped around her neck preventing her from breathing. He could feel her futile attempts to free herself of the offending appendage constricting her throat. But this only angered him even more and he began to dig his claws into her skin and let his acid seep into her veins and burn the meat underneath her flesh. Then he felt someone grab him from the shoulder and pull him off her, and not liking the idea of his prey dieing so fast he let his hand slide off of her throat as she went unconscious. But now he could kill whoever it was that dare get in business that was not their own. He quickly wiped around with his claws ready to ripe out their throat, but when he saw that person his hand was captured and he didn't try to fight it off.
There she was, his beautiful mother seething and it was directed at him as she kept glancing between him and the girl. He could smell her anger dieing down slowly being replaced with concern. Then without another thought he felt his hand being released as she ran past him and knelt next the girl, along with another person he could faintly recognize. But his mother held his attention; he knew it was her he could tell. But she was dead, was she not? He stared there with his indifferent mask all but forgotten. He watched as she shouted out what could only be the girls name.
“Kagome-san! Onegai, forgive him. He is a fool, onegai wake up, I need you to wake up right now! Please just fight it off, I need you here, Midoriko needs you here, the world needs you and your kindness. You have faced far worse injuries than this, or have you gotten weak.” That seemed to have done it because she started to stir and mumble what could be thought to be “I am not weak…”
