Mama Wolf
Motoko wasn't stupid. She could tell that something was off. She
narrowed her eyes at Leo.
“Mother,” he said.
“Disgrace,” she replied. The nymph boy frowned. Why should that be
a surprise? Motoko snorted.
“What's the matter with you?”
“Your face.” Leo sneered. Kana cringed. Motoko frowned as she
turned the cigarette in her mouth. Leo clicked his tongue.
“That's rich of you calling me a disgrace! Look at you! Are those
even clean clothes?”
His mother huffed. This back-and-forth was going nowhere.
“I'm being serious here.”
Leo rolled his eyes. “Since when? You never cared about me.”
“That's not true.”
“Could've fooled me.”
Don't be so harsh on her.
Shut up! Leo froze and looked at his mother. Still no
emotion on her face. It felt like she was sizing him up. The boy
threw up his hands.
“This is stupid,” he said.
“What was that?” Motoko asked.
“You heard me! Why am I here?”
“Can't I show that I care?”
“No.”
“And why not?”
Leo waved her off. Motoko turned the cigarette in her mouth. Her ex
would've gotten their son to talk by now. But… Well, she didn't
know where he went. Motoko was on her own for this.
“Look, I know something is wrong,” she said. “I haven't been the
best with you and your sister, but I am here now. I want to help
you. But I can't do that if you won't talk to me.” Leo sneered at
her. He got up and walked off.
“Leo!” Motoko shouted. Her son threw back his hand and walked down
the hall. She sat back, frowning. Who could see that one coming?
That was how all of their arguments ended after all. But this time
was going to be different. Motoko got up and followed after
Leo.

Motoko knew more about her children than she let on. It was her job
after all. She walked up to the door and knocked.
“What?” Leo asked. His mother took a breath.
“Leo, listen to me,” she said. “What is wrong? Please! Talk to me!”
Silence. Motoko sank to the floor with her ear to the door.
“You might think that I don't pay attention but I do. I know… I
know that there is something wrong with you. I am going to find out
what it is, one way or another. So you might as well come out with
it. How do you want to do this?” Another pause. Motoko got ready to
speak again. But then, the door opened. She lifted her head. Leo
stood over her with a dull look in his eyes.
“You want to know how I am doing?” he asked. His mother nodded. The
boy clicked his tongue.
“Fine,” he grumbled. “I'll tell you.”
