Chapter 14

Confronting the Forest Incident

When Kagome returned from her room, Inu-Yasha was fully dressed and waiting for her. Maybe her mother had not spotted them together after all. They decided they would try to play it off by having him go back out the window and knock on the front door. Kagome took a deep, calming breath and walked downstairs. The knock came at the door as she sat at the table.

“I'll get it!” yelled Sota, running to answer it.

Kagome bit into a piece of toast as her brother came in closely followed by Inu-Yasha.

“It's Inu-Yasha, Mom, Kagome!” he said excitedly.

“Oh? How long were you outside?” said Kagome's mother, setting another plate on the table, “Sit, you must have some breakfast with us.”

While Inu-Yasha and Sota seated themselves, Mrs. Higurashi caught her daughter's eye, a small smile on his lips, and winked. Kagome's eyes widened and she almost choked on the toast she was swallowing. Inu-Yasha looked over at her, a concerned scowl on his face.

“Are you all right?” he said.

“I'll be fine, really.” She said, and looked at him as if to say we'll talk later.

He shrugged and began eating the eggs Mrs. Higurashi was putting on his plate.

“How long will you be staying?” Asked Sota excitedly.

“He'll stay until we go back together, when my exams are finished,” said Kagome, “that is, if it's ok that he stays here a couple days.”

Kagome looked at her mother, as she said this, not really knowing how she would react.

“That's fine dear, he can sleep in Sota's room. I'll put down a futon.”

Inu-Yasha did not look too happy with this arrangement, but Kagome stopped him from saying anything by glancing at him warningly. He subsided, with a sour look on his face but chagrin in his golden eyes. It would have to do.

It was hard for Kagome to concentrate that day. Her mind wandered as she tried to study in the library. The words on the paper just seemed to be passing through her. Visions and thoughts of the hanyou she loved kept intruding. What was he doing? Were Sota, her mother and grandfather making him crazy? He was willing to put up with them and with boredom just to be near her. That was true love.

When she had finished her tests for the day, she felt frazzled and drained. She had no idea how she had done and was just glad the days round of torture was over. Dodging her friends and their sickening solicitous behavior, she practically ran home. Inu-Yasha was sitting in the tree outside her window again, probably to escape her family she thought ruefully. He jumped down when he saw her coming. Together they entered the house.

“How did your tests go dear?” Her mother asked.

Sota came running up to them, jumping in excitement.

“Mom and Grandpa are taking me to the movies after dinner tonight, do you guys want to come?” He said.

“Um, I don't think so Sota,” she said, trying to sound sad. “I really have to study for tomorrows exams.”

Sota looked at Inu-Yasha hopefully.

“I don't know what this `movie' is, but if Kagome isn't going than neither am I.” He said.

Sota looked forlorn. His mother came over and tousled his head affectionately.

“I don't think they would be interested in the movies you like anyway sweetheart.” She said, “But we'll have plenty of fun without them, you'll see.”

After dinner Kagome waved good-bye to her family, relieved to have some time alone with Inu-Yasha. They had only been gone a few moments before Inu-Yasha came up from behind her, taking her in his arms and kissing her neck.

“Let's go back up to your room,” he growled suggestively.

Kagome broke the embrace with a smile, taking his hand and leading him up the stairs. But after they had jumped onto her bed, she stopped him from pursuing his amorous intentions.

“We will be alone and interrupted for a couple of hours,” she said.

“Yes, I know,” he said, trying to reach for her again.

“It's just, we need to talk. I feel that you have been keeping something from me.” She said.

All the passion left Inu-Yasha in a moment, and he felt deflated. He had not seen this coming after the warm welcome Kagome had shown him. It had been too much to hope that she may have forgotten the incident in the forest. Honesty was too important to Kagome for him to be able to get out of this one. With a resigned sigh he looked into her expectant face.

“Before I tell you what happened in the forest, I want to make something perfectly clear,” said Inu-Yasha. “You are the one I want to be with, the one I love. I made my decision and nothing has changed.”

Kagome's expression became solemn and curious, but she did not interrupt him as he continued.

“When Miroku and I became separated in the forest, a demon came to me. Only it used its powers to fool me…I thought it was Kikyo.”

He licked his lips and glanced at Kagome with trepidation to see the expression on her face at this admission. She looked pale and withdrawn, but did not lash out at him angrily like he had feared, at least, not yet. But he was still hesitant to continue.

“Go on, I want to hear the rest of it.” Kagome said quietly, after a couple painful minutes longer.

“Well, I told her I wanted nothing to do with her, still thinking it was Kikyo, until the demon overpowered my mind.” He said and wondered if she believed him.

“And…?” She said, looking him squarely in the eyes.

Inu-Yasha felt the heat rising in his face as he remembered the demon/Kikyo mounting him. Why should I feel this way? He thought angrily. It's not as if it was really Kikyo. He took a deep breath and willed himself to continue without betraying any trace of embarrassment.

“She made my body submit to her, and drew out my life force by having sex with me.”

Kagome's face was inscrutable to Inu-Yasha after he made this revelation. She did not say anything, and he was unsure if this was a good or bad sign. The silence created a rising wave of fear that threatened to change to panic inside him. Well, I told her the truth, would she have it any other way? He thought. What else can I say? What does she want to hear that I may not have said? I told her at the beginning that I didn't love Kikyo anymore. I can't think of anything else to tell her, so I just better keep quite and wait this silence out.

“In my time they call the demon that attacked you succubae,” Kagome said softly, “but this demon came to you in the guise of someone you knew and loved. That's unusual…”

“Kagome, I…” Inu-Yasha began to say, reaching out his hand to touch her shoulder, but she brushed it away.

He watched her in dismay as she turned her body away from him on the bed, drawing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. She sighed, and Inu-Yasha heard a mixture of sadness and frustration in it. He was reaching the end of his patience, regardless the current situation. He never did have much patience to begin with, and had only used restraint out of his love for her.

“What's the matter?” he growled, “Is that all you have to say about this, because I don't think so. So speak your mind Kagome, come on, let me have it like I know you want to.”

She looked at him and frowned, her eyes flashing her irritation.

“You're such an idiot sometimes Inu-Yasha. Do you really think I'm mad at you?” She said, “Well if you're expecting me to be mad then `sit boy'.”

The hanyou slammed down hard, face first. If he had not been on the bed, he probably would have gone right through the floor of her room. Instead the mattress absorbed the shock, but it bounced back. It also bounced them.

“Ahhhh!” gasped Kagome in surprise as she went over one side of the bed.

“Arghhhh,” grunted Inu-Yasha as he bounced over the other side, landing on the floor on his back.

Kagome groaned as she picked herself up off the floor holding the side of her head. She had hit it on her nightstand as she fell.

“That was really smart,” came the voice of Inu-Yasha muffled by the floorboards.

They hoisted themselves up simultaneously with groans of pain. When Kagome had pulled herself up by her hands on the side of the bed, and got her head and elbows propped up on it she and Inu-Yasha found each other starring into each other's faces. As it dawned on them what a comical situation they were in, the irritated expression left her face, and Inu-Yasha's expression changed from angry to rueful. Soon they were laughing, and he jumped on the bed and pulled her back up.

“So you're not angry?” He said as they settled down.

“No, Inu-Yasha, I can't blame you for what happened…”

“But…?” He said, sensing that she had left her answer unfinished.

“Well, I'd be stupid if I didn't admit that it disturbed me that the demon came to you as Kikyo.”

Inu-Yasha sighed dejectedly. Kagome gave what she hoped was a reassuring smile, and reached out and squeezed his hand. He looked up at her hopefully and started to lean over to kiss her on the lips.

“Are you hungry?” She said, dodging his kiss and getting off the bed, “ because I am. I'll get us a snack.”

He watched her leave the room and thought that despite what she said, the incident in the forest had put a wedge between them. Just when things had gotten better, he thought, now what do I do?

A/N: I had my baby on 8/9. He is a healthy boy and we named him Daniel. I had started this chapter before I had him, but it has taken me this long to finish. I am nursing and rarely get time away from him. I will try to keep updating, but it will still be slow for a while.
