Chap ter 15 – Me, Myself, and I

Kaede wore a protective mask over her nose and mouth, so that the power of the smoke wouldn’t get to her, as she stoked the flames, dumping in some sort of dried herb. She instructed the two to breath deeply. It was more of the same herb that helps with unconscious identity, as well as another that is meant to decrease the body’s reaction to stimulus. Inhaling that smoke alone could be enough to make somebody pass out, but before they did, she had them each drink a potion she’d made for them, the one that had taken so long in the coming. What it did, was slip them into a very specific level of unconsciousness, placing them in a sort of drug-induced coma, while the smoke dulled their senses enough that their bodies wouldn’t react on any sort of lower instinct. It should help to assure that the tiniest amount of identity that had still clung to their natural bodies, that which could reach them in their sleep, stayed dormant, and did not accidentally shift, when she chanted the incantation that would remove, and replace, the larger, main portions of their souls.

With them fully and completely out of it, she began. The spell all in all took only about 20 minutes to complete, all the time had been in the preparation. She chanted her special chant, especially careful to say each and every word correctly, which she did, of course. The lights of souls could be seen leaving each body, and when they were removed from each one, and floating a few feet above, they then floated back down again, into the other body.

After most types of incantations such as this one, it’s wise to let the patients rest for a while. However, for this particular type of exorcism, it’s crucial that they do not rest. Each soul has to be reanimated within its correct body.

Dumping a new bunch of herbs into the fire, the scent of the smoke changed. This essence is designed to wake those in deep, possibly magic induced sleep.

Coughing and hacking, they both shot straight up into sitting positions, hands over their mouths, as they tried to breath. Once they were awake, Kaede had dumped water over the flames, effectively eliminating the nauseous odors rather instantaneously.

It took about five seconds for each to gather their wits, and as they turned and gazed into each other’s eyes, they then, rather simultaneously, shouted happily

“You did it!”

Kagome was so happy to be back in her own flesh, and see the amber eyes across from her that she’d grown to love and cherish so deeply, that without even thinking about it, she lunged herself forward, pressing her lips to his own.

For a split second, Inuyasha actually returned the kiss, until an unconscious swivel of his ears picked up the nearly inaudible chuckle that Kaede had tried, yet failed to suppress. Pulling himself away with an insincere “Feh!” Kagome merely smiled at him, noting that his face was about as red as his robes, at the moment.

“Thank you sooo much Kaede-sama!” she said enthusiastically to the elder miko.

“Keh…”

“Of course Kagome…Inuyasha…” she answered with a sweet smile in her voice. “You two are most welcome.”

“Come on Kagome…” Inuyasha said suddenly as he bolted to his feet. Then, surprising both herself, as well as Kaede, he reached down and offered her his hand.

She pulled a stray hair back from her eyes, tucking it behind her ear, while smiling up and him, and then, reaching up, gripped his offered hand, as he hoisted her to her feet. They then exited Kaede’s hut hand in hand, leaving the elder miko to her knowing smiles and chuckles.

The two wasted no time, Inuyasha bent down so that Kagome could climb up onto his back, and in an instant, they were gone.

Kagome “Whoo Hoo!”ed as they flew through the woods.

She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed riding on his back. It never really was quite the same, when she was the one doing the running. She had to focus some of her energy on where she was going, watching where she placed her feet. She could also sense Inuyasha’s uneasiness, when he had to concentrate on not falling off. But they each fit naturally into their new rolls, as Inuyasha effortlessly flew through the sky, the act appearing to be the second nature that it truly was for him. While Kagome, at the same time, effortlessly held on to him, holding him tightly, maybe a little tighter than she had in the past, but that was for a different reason.

Coming up on the Goshinboku tree, he effortlessly leapt up into the thick depths of its branches, where the immense overgrowth concealed them from prying eyes.

Once there, he eased Kagome off of his back, gently and slowly, so as to be sure she kept her footing. Once she was perched on the branch beside him, he sat himself down, leaning against the base of the tree’s thick trunk, as he gestured for Kagome to join him. Silently, she crawled towards him, careful not to loose her balance, and then, she curled up happily in his lap. He wrapped his protective arms around her, and the two fell into a quiet, peaceful sleep. A sleep filled with actual dreams for the first time in 6 days.

Later that afternoon, when they awoke, Kagome was the first to break the growingly awkward silence between them.

“Ya know…” she started, still snuggled up against his chest, his arms still wrapped around her body. “In a way, I’m kinda glad this whole thing happened.”

She wasn’t sure what his reaction to that statement was going to be, but she wasn’t expecting to hear him say “I agree.”

She pulled back just enough to look him in his amber eyes, never realizing how badly she missed them. “Really?”

“Keh…” he mumbled, she could tell by the look on his face he was trying to formulate something to say, so she waited, not interrupting, until he found his words.

“Never would have known how you felt otherwise.” He uttered in barely a whisper.

“Neither would I.” she agreed, kissing him gently. This time, he did not pull away.

That evening, when everyone gathered around the fire pit in Kaede’s hut, the conversation stayed focused mostly on the suspended mission of hunting Naraku and completing the jewel. Kagome reminded him that she had her math test the following day, and though she hadn’t really had any time to study for it, she still had to at least attend. They were both thankful that her family didn’t have to be made aware of what had transpired. Inuyasha was grumpy about it, as usual, but finally conceded that she could go home. He also reminded her that that night would be the night of the New Moon. At first Kagome had volunteered right away to only go home long enough to attend school, to take her test, and then she’d be right back, but he surprised her when he instead insisted that she could stay in her time, and he could stay with her.

Though that had earned a few raised eyebrows, everybody knew better than to comment directly, except of course for Miroku, who just had to say something, but what he’d decided upon was “That’s an excellent idea. Kagome’s time is much safer than our own.”

“Keh” was his only response.

Kagome found herself truly sympathizing with poor Inuyasha in that moment. After having his demonic powers for nearly a week herself, she now found herself missing them. She’d get used to being in her own body again, eventually. But gradually over time, what had at first been incredibly foreign and alien had slowly become expected. Now she knows how he feels when he looses his power on the night of the New Moon. That week in her body must have been hell for him. It didn’t seem fair that he only got two days and one night in his own demonic flesh again, before being stripped of his powers once more, but at least he will still be in his own body.

Her understanding of him transcended to that of his behavior that night in the hut. It hadn’t surprised her in the slightest when he slept against the edge of the wall, Tetsusaiga gripped in his clutches and resting against his shoulder. Though truth be told, she wanted to snuggle up against him, she wouldn’t even dare breech the subject, instead passing him only a moment’s glance, to allow him to see and register the smile she bore on her face, before she turned herself over, and snuggled closely with Shippo, instead.

Early that morning, as they left for the well, Kagome thought about how to phrase her question, but before she could even attempt to spit it out, he’d already sensed that something had been disturbing her, his understanding of her rivaling hers of him in every way.

“What it is?” he asked rather out of the blue, except she wasn’t even startled by his question, instead simply coming out and stating

“I was just wondering what we were gonna tell the others.”

“About what?” he asked gruffly, though he knew very well what in deed.

“You know…” she said smoothly, “About us.” She specified anyway.

“What are we?” He asked her, having given the topic at hand much of his own attention as well.

“I don’t know…” she responded honestly. “We love each other, so shouldn’t we be together?”

“Like mates?”

His question triggered a flash of memory within Kagome’s brain, and without even really thinking about it, she growled the word “mate” in the inu tongue.

He paused dead in his tracks, looking at her with a bewildered expression.

She saw his face, and couldn’t help but chuckle. Seeing her chuckling enabled him to relax, as he took her hand, and nodded slowly.

“I’d like that…” she heard him admit slowly, then adding “…never thought I’d ever find a mate.”

She surprised him again, but not really, when she immediately jumped in with “You are not a worthless half-breed, you are Inuyasha.”

“Keh”

Back on Kagome’s side of the well, they greeted her family, visiting briefly throughout breakfast, before Kagome had to leave for school. Sota also having left for school, and Jii-chan out tending to the shrine grounds, it left Inuyasha alone for several hours with Mrs. Higurashi.

She tried to strike up a normal conversation, but he brushed off most anything she said with a response of “Keh” so after a few minutes, she went about her housework, doing laundry and whatnot. When she entered Kagome’s room to collect her daughter’s dirty clothes, and discovered the hanyou perched up on her bed, sitting Indian style, sword draped across his shoulders, she couldn’t help but smirk.

“Keh, what?” he asked a little grumpily, but not really, as he slowly opened his eyes to acknowledge her presence.

“I thought you’d be out in your tree, not in Kagome’s room.” She stated simply.

“Keh” was of course his only reply, but he quickly lost his composure, when she caught him off guard with her next statement.

“I understand, I’m sure you find my daughter’s scent very soothing.”

He nearly fell over he was so surprised, he did manage to drop Tetsusaiga as he unfolded himself abruptly, preparing to stand and defend his actions, before he realized there was no reason to.

Mrs. Higurashi raised her hand palm out, meaning to sooth, as she said “Calm down Inuyasha….I understand and it’s okay.”

“Feh. You don’t understand…” she thought she heard him grumble disbelievingly.

“No?” she asked with a smile. “You’re half inu-youkai, and I know a thing or two about canine social structures.”

“Feh”

“I also happen to know, that you care for my daughter a great deal.”

That earned her a very serious expression, as Inuyasha did bolt to his feet, and looking her right in the eyes, he nodded his head once to show she was correct.

“You’re not….” He asked, astonished. “You’re not upset?”

“Upset?” she asked with a laugh. “I was upset when I had my baby girl cry her broken heart out on my shoulder that she loved you, but that you didn’t share her feelings…” at that point, Inuyasha’s ears lowered to his head. “But…” she continued. “I am not blind, and I saw the looks of love you two were flashing each other throughout breakfast. Now I find you in here, where her presence is obviously the strongest.” She took his hand, and smiled brightly. “I don’t know what transpired, that you two have finally confessed your feelings to each other, but I couldn’t be happier that you have. Kagome had a glow about her this morning that I haven’t seen in her in over a year.”

Inuyasha didn’t know what to say to all that, so he said nothing, merely nodding, and muttering “Keh” again. Mrs. Higurashi chuckled, and gently resting her hand upon his shoulder, encouraged him to raise his eyes to meet hers.

“Just do me a favor…” she said in a sweet, loving tone.

“Anything.” He answered without hesitation.

“Don’t break her heart again.”

His ears flattened, when Kagome’s school friend had asked that of him, he hadn’t understood what she’d been talking about, but now he did. Looking Kagome’s mother in her eyes, he clearly answered “Never.”

He went on to confess, though through an increasingly interesting shade of red as he did so, that he intended to take Kagome as his mate. He explained that while they could rut and not be mates, (just like humans) that they hadn’t (not really) and that it was his intention to perform the binding ceremony, that would bond them together. He explained that it was stronger than a human’s wedding ceremony, because it would literally bond them together, increasing her life span to that of his, and increasing her senses as well.

Mrs. Higurashi voiced mild concern that her daughter might not feel comfortable with his senses at first, and explained that he’d better make sure she understood, but all the while he was thinking in the back of his head, that she had no idea, and he chuckled that Kagome would probably be relieved to learn her senses could increase again.

In the end, Mrs. Higurashi gave her blessing. She insisted only that Inuyasha be sure to explain everything before they proceeded, to which he gave her his word.
