A Kunoichi

 

Why did I ever chase after Uchiha Sasuke, you ask?

 

Especially since I saw nothing but looks in him to begin with?

 

Trust be told, I could have chosen just about anyone. And of all the girls who chose Uchiha, only Sakura ever, in my opinion, truly cared for him, trusted him. Maybe even loved him.

 

But I had to choose. Why?

 

A kunoichi's life is hard.

 

Once we are no longer genin, we can be sent to do anything. Our lives - our bodies - are no longer our own.

 

We can be sent to seduce a man so we can kill him, or to gain information through him. To even bear him a child. To kill that child.

 

All females who wish to enter the academy are told this, and given a choice. Not all of us choose his path.

 

But Sakura, Tenten, Hinata, and myself…

 

We chose this path.

 

Still…

 

I do not want my first to be a nobody. Or worse, a man I hate.

 

And I do not know if, when I return, I will still be able to love.

 

I have seen them - those kunoichi who have lost the ability to love. Who walk around with empty eyes and even emptier hearts. Who live only for their duty.

 

And I know I might be one of them someday.

 

So, for now, each of us girls chooses a boy, hoping he will let us love him. Knowing me may never be able to.

 

Hinata chose Naruto; Tenten, Neji; Sakura, Sasuke…

 

And I? You could say I chase Sasuke.

 

You could also say I chose Shikamaru.

 

 

We all pray, every night, that we might be permitted to love them.

 

We all know we may never be able to.

 

That is the way of the kunoichi.

 

The road is narrow and hard.

 

But for my friends and I… It is the only way.
