Sunset had always been Naruto’s favorite time of day, ever since he was a very small child.

It was during this time of the day that most of the people of the village, both civilian and shinobi, would disappear into their homes or be on some mission for the remainder of the evening.

This was the time of the day were he would be blessed with peaceful solitude; where people would promptly forget he existed and the abuse that he suffered at their hands every single day would halt.

Everyday Naruto would sit by the river’s edge and watch the sun slowly dip into the horizon, painting the sky and waters the most magnificent shades of gold and orange. He especially liked watching the water at this time. When the sun set it looked like the water was made out of gold and the way it shimmered was almost hypnotic. The world just seemed so beautiful and magical at this time and it touched him in the deepest and most profound of ways.

Sunset was Neji’s favorite time of day, due entirely to one Uzumaki Naruto.

Everyday since he was a small child, he would wander over towards the river to see the beautiful blonde child sitting there. It was a sight that always managed to calm him heart and bring him peace, even after the cursed seal was placed on his forehead, even after his father died.

Neji would watch in awe as the fading sunlight would cast an ethereal glow on Naruto, making him look like some sort of divine entity that just arrived upon the earth. The sight made his heart beat with a whole host of emotions that stirred his very being.

Naruto sat on the river bank, as he did every evening, feeling calm and serene as he witnessed day slowly transform into night.

“How beautiful,” he breathed.

“I agree.”

Naruto jumped at the voice. When he turned he saw Neji and relaxed, “Neji how do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Always just appear out of nowhere?”

Neji shrugged his shoulders and looked to Naruto, his normally impassive eyes twinkling with amusement, “It’s because I’m a superior ninja.”

Naruto turned to him, a heated retort ready to go but it died when he saw Neji’s amusement. Instead he settled for a laugh.

Neji just smiled.

A comfortable silence settled between the two boys as the sun set and now night was upon them. Occasionally the boys would take little peaks when they were certain that the other wasn’t looking and blush.

Naruto stretched, “I’m going to go home, I have a mission early tomorrow.”

Neji nodded.

“And Neji?”

“Yeah?”

“Meet you here tomorrow? Same time, same place?”

Neji looked up and saw a slight blush color Naruto’s cheeks.

“Sure.”
