Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto.

The full moon hovered overhead, silently watching all beneath it with an air of detached longing. Or perhaps it was the single figure gazing at its otherworldly beauty that held that empty longing. He sat there, knees hugged to his chest, shivering slightly, in the middle of a grassy field with nothing for company but his own thoughts. The night was clear, cold, and lonely.

ÒBeautiful...Ó Naruto breathed. No matter how many times he stopped to look at the moon on nights such as this, it never ceased to amaze him how hauntingly alien the moon seemed to the Earth. ÔIts almost as thoughÕ, he thought, Ôthat it doesn't belong here, with us. Or perhaps its us that are intruding on its presence, dirtying it.Õ

He couldn't help but feel akin to it somehow, for it seemed as though the moon was as desolate as he was. Empty of emotion but for an almost overwhelming feeling of sadness born of loneliness. Knowing that on this Earth he would never feel the warmness of belonging or the touch of another person. A bitter smile spread across his lips ÔHeh, why am I dwelling on this? This is how its always been. This is how it will always be.Õ

A chill wind swirled passed him, gently tousling a few strands of hair as he put his head down and held his knees tighter. ÔI wonder what the Moon feels like?Õ A single cold tear slid down a scarred cheek. He closed his eyes and started to cry. When there was no one around, Naruto didn't need to hide behind his mask anymore. Living with a smile on his face, leaking hollow laughter from his lips, was how he spent each day surrounded with people. No one ever saw through it, not even when he barley tried to hide it. No one cared enough to.

ÔBut that's ok, right? You never needed anyone before so why do you now? Just forget about it, already!Õ Naruto fell back into the grass and lay, glaring up at the moon. ÔThis is my existence...Õ His tears grew hot, welling from beep within him. All emotion left his face and no sobs came forth, it was too late for that. All his body could do was drain its self of any semblance of hope, into a cold, calm, bitter acceptance. Hope only brought disappointment.

ÒNaruto?Ó

Naruto slowly got up, back facing the approaching figure. He didn't want to pretend anymore, acting happy and carefree whenever he was around another human being. He didn't have the strength.

ÒWhat are you doing, dobe?Ó

Naruto turned only his head to Sasuke, eyes empty as he glanced at him, hair partially covering his face, with tears glistening over his scarred cheeks from the moonlight, before he turned and started walking away. Having never uttered a word.

Sasuke started, ÒN, Naruto! What's wrong?! Wait!Ó He quickly caught up to him, grabbing NarutoÕs wrist and turning him so that he faced Sasuke. ÒHey, are you ok?Ó

Naruto let out a bitter laugh, ÒHah, ÔOKÕ? Nothing out of the fucking ordinary, Sasuke.Ó Naruto wrenched his arm out of SasukeÕs grip and turned to walk again, leaving a confused Sasuke behind.

ÒWhat the fuck are you talking about Naruto!? YouÕre never like this!Ó Sasuke had run up to him, grabbed him and roughly shoved him against a nearby tree to force Naruto to look him in the eye. ÒÕNever like thisÕ?! How the fuck would you know? You couldn't give a shit about the people around you, let alone actually stop and pay attention to how I act! YouÕre just like every other fucking person on this planet!Ó

Sasuke just stared, mouth slightly open, ÔWhat the hell is wrong with him right now, this isn't Naruto.Õ Sasuke tightened his grip on NarutoÕs shoulders. Softening his voice he said, ÒStop being stupid. I do care Naruto, why else would I ask? Now what happened?Ó

Naruto slumped against the tree, defeat evident in his voice ÒNothing happened, this is how I am. Have you ever really listened to me when I laugh or looked at me when I act stupid? I cringe at the how hallow my own laughter sounds!Ó NarutoÕs voice steadily rose then dropped off to barley a whisper. ÒOf course you havenÕt.Ó

His eyes dropped from SasukeÕs ÒI always envied you Sasuke. You were never afraid to give people the cold shoulder when you didn't feel like talking. You never pretended to be something your not because you were to scared to show people how you truly felt.Ó Sasuke watched as crystal tears started to gather in NarutoÕs blue eyes then slide down his face as he looked into SasukeÕs once more. ÒSometimes, when I saw you at the academe, your eyes would look so sad...like mine did whenever I was alone and looked into a mirror. But you would look back at me with the same cold indifference you do with everyone else. Like I was just the same as them. ...And to you, I am just the same aren't I?Ó

Naruto knew the answer. He had always known that he meant nothing to Sasuke and, like everything else, that would never change. ÔThis whole time... Naruto was... Like this, underneath all of that?Õ Sasuke stood there, numb, watching Naruto as he again lowered his eyes. Tears streaming across scared cheeks. Sasuke couldn't speak, couldn't find any words to comfort Naruto, to try and make it up for all the times he ignored him. ...So he didn't.

Before either Knew what was happening, Sasuke had gently lifted NarutoÕs chin with his hand and leaned in and kissed him gently. Naruto closed his eyes and and...just felt. He was overcome by a different feeling, one that was replacing the sadness. ÔWho would have thought the Moon would feel this way?Õ
