The Story

1
Those who walk amongst the trees
Those who belong to no man
The free ones dancing in the moonlightLiving as one with The Forest forbidden
To those who follow their king
Tell a story, tell a legend
Tell of the Protector that allows them
To live as they do, to dance as they do
To laugh, to cry, to die as they do
The Protector who mourns and hunts and begs
For forgiveness, for love, for an ending
I am the storyteller, I am you
I live as you do, I dance as you do
I laugh, I cry, I will die as you someday shall
Listen to me now, listen well
Children, gather, settle down
Every life has a beginning
And every story and end
Let us go back, back, back
So far back that we, the Forest Children
We are not here, we do not exist
It is a night like this one
Where you can see...

2
The stars shine brightly in the black sky
There is no moon to light the forest path
The silence makes the soldiers nervous
The chirping of the crickets
The croaking of the toads
The hoot of hunting owls
The squeaks of searching bats
The shrieks of dying mice
The rustle of foraging vermin
All is silent, all is gone
Only the footfalls on the forest path
The crunch of dry, dead leaves
The rustles of shields and swords
The startled breaths
The barely muted whimpers
Of the traveling horde
The horses' hooves
Their nervous huffs and neighs and whinnies and
Grunts that coincide with the creaking, rusting wheels
Connected to the old, rusting cage that needs repair
With bars that are still strong enough
To withstand against a thousand men
With grimy straw lightly covering the jagged metal, stained with blood
Old blood, new blood
The blood belonging to the scraped knees
And elbows, and back, and arms, and face of the creature inside
The same blood spotting the clothes
That envelope the emaciated figure
Blood, dried and crusty
Falling to the ground like the forgotten feathers of a phoenix
Blood, wet and glistening
In the faint, faint torchlight the leader of the flock
Is carrying to light his path, his trail
The tattered rags cover just enough
For modesty's sake, but they do not hide what is left
Of the wings that sprouted from the creature's back
Great wings, lively wings
Wings that reminded one
Of summer days, and spring mornings
Multicolored hues that seemed to glow
That seemed to exude happiness
Joy, laughter, and smiles, but
Now resemble the frayed clothing
That gives no protection against the autumn winds
Silver eyes stare blankly at passing trees
Eyes are the window to the soul
The soul is dead, but the container lives on

3
The stars shine brightly in the black sky
The Hunter needs no moon to see the forest path
The silence is broken by the thundering soldiers
Calculating eyes watch the horde travel past
Black eyes with no mercy, no forgiveness, never blink
The forest holds its breath, waiting for The Hunter
Waiting for his hunt to finish, for the blood to fall
Waiting to feast, waiting to mourn for the souls
That will go to the gates of The Dark Oblivion
To be lost forever amongst the others
The ones who dared upset the one who holds
The hunter's heart, black as it may be
The one who is The Hunter's Heart
Who is light and joy and sunshine
The wind gusts across the canopy
The trees dance and sway in response
Branches creak and threaten to fall
The Hunter stands unmoving
Great, leathery wings unfurled
Clawed wings mottled with shadows and blood
Wings that breathe death and pain and vengeance
Soulless eyes follow the cage trapping
The lifeless eyes and tattered wings
The stole from Him, they captured
They tortured, they mutilated
Merciless eyes close, fighting tears
Tears for The Hunter's Heart
Tears for her pain, for her torment
The Hunter's eyes open, they stare at his Heart
He sees her before the capture
His light, his laughter, his smile, his joy
His song, his dance, his sanctuary, his softness
All of that is gone, dead, deceased, never to be again
The Hunter's eyes narrow, he notches an arrow
Into the bow of bone and hair from enemies long slain
Ready for battle, for payment, revenge
A smile gracse his features, fangs are revealed
The arrow flies, torchlight extinguishes
The forest breathes once more
The chirping of the crickets
The croaking of the toads
The hoot of hunting owls
The squeaks of searching bats
The shrieks of dying mice
The rustle of foraging vermin
Goes unheard in the darkness
Amidst the screams, amidst the death
Amidst the blood, amidst the vengeance

4
The Hunter's Heart closes her eyes
Listens to the symphony around her
Smiles, laughs, silver eyes open
The guise held over her features
Becomes the words she chanted in her head
Hidden in a place no enemy could reach
'I believe in you'
The Hunter laughs, a frightening sound
For those his sword is destined to meet
For those whose heart his claws will rend
The words he chants inside his head
'I'll give up everything to find you'
The mingling laughter of the pair
The Hunter, his Heart, the smiles
They share, words echoing in their heads
'I have to be with you, to live, to breathe'
The battle comes too close to the horse
The one who pulls The Hunter's Heart
He startles, he bolts, he weaves and bobs
Through the bodies, the trees, the battle
The Hunter's Heart screams
The Hunter hears, but cannot move
The battle continues, the horse retreats
Blinded by fear and the smell of deathBoth horse and passenger plunge onward
Through the forest, out of the trees
Into a river that sweeps them away
The battle ends, The Hunter collapses
His Heart gone again, his energy spent
Dawn breaks over the horizon
The forest awakens, the forest sleeps

5
The horse's head breaks the surface
Of the river who tries to bring death
The load he carried through the forest is gone
Has broken free, he is lighter, he floats
He swims to the bank and wearily makes his way
To a dry spot in the sun, sides heaving
he shakes his mane, lets out a whinny
And trots away, to freedom, to life
As far away from the gates of The Dark Oblivion
As his hooves will carry him
Deep beneath the water
Where the sunlight can't reach
Water rushes through bars of a rusty cage
A pair of hands tug at the bars, beat at the roof
But nothing budges, nothing moves
The prison is a deathbed, squeezing the last breath
From the lungs of The Hunter's Heart
A mental scream, a mental sob, she cannot voice
Her frustration, her words, her vision as life fades

6
They meet in the Realm of Dreams
The Hunter and The Hunter's Heart
He mourns already, tears leak
From eyes that now show sorrow and guilt
The Hunter's Heart smiles sadly and kneels
She wraps her arms around the weeping Hunter
She whispers words she hopes he can hear
If not today, then tomorrow
If not tomorrow, then some day afterward
The words will echo in time until they reach his ears
'You know I can't stay long
All I wanted to say was I love you and I'm not afraid
Can you hear me? Can you feel me in your arms?'
The DreamWorld vanishes before her eyes
Silver eyes see nothing but darkness
She feels nothing but cold, rushing water
The pain of torn wings, scratches and blood
Then, nothing, a light appears
A light that reveals the gates that lead to The Dark Oblivion
She retreats, she is not done, Death cannot come
She tightens her arms around the oblivious hunter
She lightly kisses his cheek, savors the tears residing there
'I know you hear me. I can taste it in your tears'
The Hunter's head lifts, he turns his head
Nothing is there, nothing at all
he wishes there was, he can almost see
Her form, her visage, his Heart
The Hunter's Heart smiles and lets him go
She shakes her head and backs away
The DreamWorld is fading, the gates appearing
Caught between to realms, The Hunter's Hear whispers
'You pray your dreams will leave you here
But still, you'll wake and know the truth
No one is there. Say good night, don't be afraid
I can hear you calling me, calling me as you fade to black'

7
The Hunter awakens, darts up to search
Deep down, he knows, but still he must look
He never finds her, he never dies
It is by his will the forest changes
It becomes a sanctuary, a haven
Children flock there, orphans and runaways
They live, and they dance
The laugh, they cry, they die
They aid the one who was The Hunter
Now their Protector in his new hunt

Forst Children gather
Lay your heads to rest
Every life has a beginning
And every story and end
But every life has not yet begun
And not every story has written
An ending
