Epilogue
“Come on mom!” she said, motioning for her to hurry up, “We wanted to do this before the sun set right?”
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” Collette said, trotting up to where her daughter stood, “You are so impatient.”
“I’m not impatient; I’m just really excited for this that’s all.”
Collette felt her stomach tie up in knots as she watched her fifteen-year old daughter skip along the sidewalk to the beach in her white ceremonial dress. She and Sven had anticipated this day when they were young as well. Back then the ceremony foretold heartache, but now it was a time of happy celebration. Though they were no longer required to give up their children who had inherited the merpeople’s curse those living on the island still performed the coming of age ceremony out of respect.
They arrived just in time and Collette stood by the newly erected statue as she watched. As she had predicted the traits her daughter had inherited from her father surfaced on this day. Collette watched with a decent measure of pride as her child leapt and twisted out of the water with her long tail streaming out behind her.
“Oh, Sven…” she whispered, gazing up at the statue of her deceased husband, “If only you could see her. She’s so much like you…”
The statue of Sven had been built and erected shortly after his death by the townspeople who were grateful for the sacrifice he had made. It depicted him in two ways. One was of him with his long fish tail, holding a javelin in his hands, and the other was of him with a pair of human legs standing next to Collette. Much as she liked the statue it would never replace the real thing that she had lost fifteen years ago.
“MOM!!” her daughter called from the water.
“Yes, Taylor?”
“Watch this!”
“OK, I’m watching.”
Grinning like her father she dove out of the water and then burst back out, trailing her fish tail behind her. Collette smiled and clapped her hands as a solitary tear trickled down her cheek.
“She’s like you in so many ways Sven…So, so many ways…”
