ONE POKEMON

Memorable Battle

By Michael O'Hare

Peace, sometimes boredom. She normally felt the former in this state.
She had more than enough time outside, however. A great deal of that
time was spent not only training, but grooming. She loved to look her
best, whether it was for going into a battle, or simply walking
around. She always made absolutely sure her appearances were perfect.
She did not think of herself as vain, however. After all, who would
not want to look their very best, regardless of the situation?

At the moment, however, as her body floated in a non - corporeal
state, she was concerned about nothing, her body flowing to every
corner of her small confines. Slowly, however, she became aware of a
slight commotion happening outside. Two people yelling occasionally,
the sounds of a battle, these were all natural sounds for her. She
certainly hoped she would be called upon soon, as she was beginning to
feel somewhat bored now.

After several minutes of waiting for her turn, she had nearly
forgotten about the battle happening outside of her world, and was
ready to allow her mind to drift back into a serene state, when she
heard her trainer's voice.

"Vulpix, go!"

At the sound of his voice, her sanctuary shifted suddenly. Almost
immediately, the feeling of tranquility was replaced with a sudden
rush of adrenaline. The adrenaline high, coupled with the thrilling
feeling of her body becoming solid once again, were enchanting to her.
She loved these feelings, almost as much as the battles themselves.
She savored every second of the thrilling, indescribable feeling of
one's body making the transition from ethereal to corporeal, and, as
the transition finished, cried out proudly into the crisp, summertime
sky.

"Vul!"

She stood proudly on the grassy field, her majestic, reddish fur
shining beautifully, her elegant eyes full of prideful determination
and excitement. She was more than ready to battle. So, it seems, was
her opponent.

He was larger than the normal Arbok would be, and certainly seemed
just as determined as she was. For a brief second, they looked over
each other, searching for any weaknesses or potential problems.

When she felt she was ready, she slowly circled her opponent,
searching for an opening. The Arbok, had, apparently, decided to take
a defensive stance, coiling itself up, and rearing its head up high,
giving itself an imposing presence. Although her opponent did look
threatening, it had no effect on her. She had been fighting long
enough to ignore any such petty attempts at psychological undermining.

"Vulpix!" At the sound of her trainer's voice, her muscles tensed,
eagerly awaiting the inevitable command.

"Hit it from behind!"

With lightning speed, she dashed behind her opponent, and, before he
could react, she quickly spun around and collided with him from
behind. The Arbok gave out a startled cry, as his head was violently
pushed forward, and she gracefully and effortlessly bounded off of
him, landing in front of him. As she turned around and prepared to
attack once again, she was surprised to see her opponent's serpentine
body swinging down towards her. The blow to the head had hurt him, but
not enough. He had used the momentum of the strike to swing his
serpentine body at her. His body cruelly slammed into hers, knocking
the wind out of her. Before she could recover, he coiled himself
around her, and launched her into the air. With the sudden shock of
being airborne, she forced herself to recover immediately from the
attack, and spun herself around to view her enemy. Tossing her into
the air proved to be a mistake, as she used the sun to blind her
opponent as she dove onto him. Blinded by the light, the Arbok was
unable to see her as she dove onto his head and drove it into the
ground. Her opponent incapacitated, she quickly leapt onto his body
and began rapidly biting him.

Despite the shock of having his head forcefully driven into the hard
earth, the pain of the repeated biting was more than enough to snap
the Arbok out of his incapacitation, and he quickly rose up and tried
desperately to shake her off. As she continued sinking her teeth into
his scaly flesh, he thrashed around wildly, trying to force her off of
him. She was finally unable to hold on any further, and was thrown
from her opponent. Unable to flip her body around in time, her back
impacted painfully on the ground. She shook the pain off, and looked
up in time to see the enraged Arbok looming over her.

"Arbok, Poison Sting!"

At his trainer's command, her opponent quickly sprayed a volley of
stinging, needle - like projectiles from its maw. At such a close
range, it was impossible for her to dodge, and she knew it. As the
attack repeatedly pierced her body, wave after wave of searing,
unbearable pain rolled through her body. Her body began convulsing
from the near - maddening pain coursing through it. As the attack
reached its end, she let out a cry of pain, and collapsed.

After several seconds of shuddering on the ground, she managed to pull
herself up slowly, despite the agony. Her vision was blurred, and her
mind was heavily clouded with pain. She could hear her trainer
yelling, and, although she could not understand a single word he was
saying, the fear and concern in his voice was evident. She forced
herself to focus, trying her best to focus on her surroundings. She
could barely make out the Arbok, who simply seemed to be waiting for
her to pass out. Indeed, she could feel her strength and coherency
leaving her with every passing second. She did not want this to
happen, she could not let this happen, and fought with every last
ounce of herself to stay awake. It seemed, however, that this battle
was lost.

That was when the sensation hit her. It did not settle into her
gradually, it rushed into her being all at once, the very shock of its
sudden presence enough to snap her out of her daze. The sensation was
indescribable. It felt as though every single atom in her body had
accelerated dramatically. The pain, once unbearable, was now slowly
disappearing from her, her vision once again became clear, and her
mind was once again sharp and alert. She was, for certain, not sure
what this feeling was, only that it had given her an unbelievable rush
of adrenaline. She had never felt anything like this before, not in
her entire life. Was this what it felt like to evolve? Had her time to
turn into a Ninetales finally come?

Remember where she was, she quickly pushed these questions away, and
focused on the battle at hand. She quickly steadied herself, much to
the surprise of both the trainers and the Arbok, and crouched into an
attack position.

"Vul!"

Her voice resounded with her newfound strength and determination, and
she dared her opponent to attack her. Shocked by her sudden burst of
energy, the Arbok did its best to disguise it shock, and gave off an
imposing hiss. She ignored his response, and charged straight at him.

This time, the Arbok could not hide his shock. This little Pokemon,
which he had just beaten down, was charging him as if he had done
nothing to her. Quickly, however, this shock gave way to anger. He
charged at her as well, crying out in fury.

As they reached each other, the Arbok lashed out at her, ready to sink
his teeth into her flesh. She nimbly leapt over his attack, and he
caught nothing but empty air, his head once again driven into the
ground as she landed forcefully on him once again. As he tried to lift
his head, she leapt up and drove his head into the ground once again,
and again. Now seething with rage, the Arbok violently threw his head
up, throwing her off onto the ground. For a moment, they stood still,
staring at the other, each poised to attack. An arrogant smile crept
across the Arbok's lips, as he broke the stillness with a sudden lunge
at her. She effortlessly leapt to the side, avoiding his fangs, but
leaping right onto his waiting tail. Before she had realized what he
had done, he had coiled her body around her. She was trapped.

Her mind raced as she tried to find some way to escape, as the Arbok
tightened his grip. As he did this, she began to push herself back,
trying to force herself free, tail - first. She pushed back as hard as
she could, but her opponent had coiled itself tightly around her
backside, making that form of escape impossible. As she continued to
push, the Arbok moved its head in front of her, and their eyes met.
She met his savage arrogance with a steely defiance, no trace of fear
evident in her.

"Okay, Arbok, finish this fight!"

At his trainer's command, Arbok opened his fearsome maw, preparing to
deliver the battle's final strike. He was fully expecting to see his
opponent shaking in fear, and was surprised when, instead of terror,
he saw an arrogant smirk cross her face suddenly. It was at this point
that he realized he had inadvertently loosened his grip on her forward
body.

Before the Arbok could react, she catapulted out of his grip, using
his own body as a springboard, and slamming her head onto the roof of
his mouth. He reared back, crying out in agony, as she prepared to
attack attack, her move met with cries of shock from the Arbok's
trainer, and cheers from her own.

"Fire Blast, Vulpix!"

She nodded, and opened her mouth to let out a long cry that slowly
increased in volume. As she did, her eyes began to glow with an
intense light. When the light in her eyes reached a frighteningly
bright intensity, she let loose a humungous blast of yellow and
crimson flame towards her foe. The Arbok recovered from the blow just
in time to see the stream of fire bear down on him, and let out a cry
of pain and defeat as it enveloped his body. As the flames died down,
he belched out a small cloud of smoke, and collapsed in a heap.

She stood, silently and still, for several seconds, allowing the
victory to completely register within her mind. As soon as it did, the
adrenaline rush ended, and she collapsed herself, gasping for breath.
She heard her trainer call her name, but she was not moving. Her head
was ringing, she was bleeding from the mouth, and her hind legs hurt
like Hell. She was going to lie down, and wait for him to come to her.
More accurately, she was going to collapse, and wait for him to come
to her.

And, that is exactly what she did. Next thing she knew, she was in his
arms, cradled gently and congratulated for her victory.

"Great job, Vulpix! You did great!"

She gave out a soft, cooled response, and turned towards her defeated
opponent. Already, his trainer was by his side, and she was lovingly
administering a super potion to it. He quickly noticed her looking at
him, and smiled at her, nodding his head in respect. She smiled and
nodded back, and, as the two trainers began to converse, she slowly
drifted to sleep in her trainer's arms. This had been a memorable
battle for her, for more than one reason.

After her treatment at the Pokemon center, her trainer treated her to
what was one of the best groomings she had ever had. Now, they were
resting in the fancy hotel he had gotten a room in. They had ordered
room service, and were enjoying a delicious victory meal by the room's
small fireplace.

"You fought really good today, Vulpix! I'm sure that you only need a
couple more victories to evolve!"

Upon hearing this, she smiled inwardly. The sensation she felt during
the battle certainly showed her that she was close to evolving, close
enough to taste it in every part of her body. But, she did not mind
waiting a little longer if it meant experiencing that euphoric feeling
once again. Besides, the battle itself was the importan thing, not the
results, right?

It had been a big day, and they were both very tired. Although the
night was young, and he had made plans to go and enjoy the city's
nightlife, her trainer had inadvertently dozed off on his bed, shortly
after his meal. She hopped onto the bed and stared at him, smiling.
She really wished she could tell him how close she was to evolving,
and how euphoric those feelings were to her. She honestly did not
think he would be able to truly understand these feelings, as they
were things only a Pokemon could experience, much less understand. As
she thought this, she quickly realized that she was fighting back
sleep, as well. Turning off the light by the bed, she curled up beside
her sleeping trainer, and slowly fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

DISCLAMER(S)

Nintendo owns Pokemon and all related characters. I own this fic, for
lack of better term. Nobody owns the Arbok's trainer, though. Use her,
if you want! Put her in a dress and take her out to see Dean Martin!
Cover her in melted cheese and sing to her, if you want! See what I
care!

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

I honestly gave a lot of thought to the subject of what the trainer's
name should be. I wrestled around with a few names for a while, but
nothing really clicked. After a while, I decided that, if the Vulpix
was to remain without an actual name, so would the trainer. Of course,
on that level, I could've named the Vulpix, as well...

Either way, I think the story's better off with the trainer having no
name. Heck, you could imagine it to be whoever you want it to be, this
way, right? Ever wanted to see what Karl Marx or Frank Sinatra would
look like as a Pokemon trainer? Well, now you can... sort of.

One other thing: When I wrote down the words, `Blinded by the light'
at the beginning of the battle scene, the song `Blinded by the Light',
got stuck in my head. You know the song...

Blinded by the light!
Wrapped up like a deuce,

Another roller in the night!

I hate that damned song! Oh, well...
