“Red! Duck!”

Red ducked, as something whizzed over his head, causing the Nidoking that had been about to attack him to roar in pain, clutching at it's head. Red hurriedly took advantage of this distraction to run a few feet away, before releasing his Lapras with an order for Ice Beam. The pokémon obligingly froze the Nidoking solid in a block of ice.

Red breathed out a sigh of relief. “What is a wild Nidoking doing here?”

“Beats me.” Lance said dryly. “Good thing you ducked in time. Are you going to catch it?”

“Sure.” Red fished a poke ball out of his jacket and tapped the frozen pokémon. It was sucked in, and something small and metallic fell to the floor.

Red frowned as he picked it up, gaping. It was… a throwing knife?

“Lance?”

“Yes?” The Dragon Master asked calmly. “You're wondering about that, aren't you?” He took the knife back from Red, slipping it up his jacket sleeve as Red stared at him. “I do carry means of protection other than pokémon. You never know when unpleasant circumstances may arise.”

“I see…” Red breathed.

Lance gave him a quick hug, and they continued exploring Cinnabar's coastline.
