“Why do you have to leave? Why?”
“It is my duty, Red. You know that.” Lance said softly. “I cannot shirk it.”
“But what if you don't come back, Lance?”
“I will.” The Champion whispered. “I promise…” He kissed Red good-bye, before he released Aerodactyl and flew off.
Red watched until Lance was no longer in sight, before he nodded grimly and returned to the Plateau. He had a bone to pick with Goodman…

“Kairyuu! Hakai Beam!”
The energy smashed through the enemy ranks, as Lance's dragons exploded from the ground, Fire Blast scorching the sky. The Dragon Master's eyes were cold, as he ordered the next wave to strike.
The soldiers screamed, but he heard none of it, wrapped securely in the embrace of war, siren song humming in his ears. From behind him, he felt the rush of wind as his dragons charged, bullets ricocheting off armored plates as he smirked.
Fools.
Did they think they would harm him?
A flicker in the corner of his eye, and he nodded. He had expected their ice guns, but it would do no good, no good at all…
He flicked his fingers, as Charizard's Flamethrower melted the first machine into melted slag, than the second, hearing their horrified screams.
Those caught in the blast were reduced to ashes.
He waited, and that night, while the survivors huddled in foxholes in blood-soaked earth, he crooned lullabies to his dragons and healed them, for tomorrow would be another day.

“There is no way to win.” Sidney cursed. “Drake, you were supposed to get rid of his dragon force! You promised you would!”
The Houen Dragon Master flinched, but gave no excuse. What was he to say?
Lance's pokémon were wreaking havoc on their troops, and they were running out of manpower fast.
If only Glacia hadn't gone missing. Her ice pokémon would have been useful.

When Lance returned to his tent the next night, he was quite surprised to find a visitor waiting.
“What are you doing here, Red?”
“I came to see you.” Red grinned. “Do you mind? I couldn't wait.”
“Not at all.” The Dragon Master smirked. The League Chanseys would do their work well, and in any case, the war was almost over.
Red hugged him tightly, feeling Lance tense. “I'm glad it's ending, Lance. I wish you didn't have to come…”
“It's all right, love. Tomorrow, everything will be over.”
“Really?”
“Really.” Lance promised, and something in his eyes warned Red that it would be dangerous.
At the moment, Red didn't care, when Lance sank down upon him and kissed him, feeling his heartbeat pulse.
Lovely.

The next morning, Red realized why Lance was so confident. He was ending it with a flourish, and so, he had called in Kanto and Johto's legendary pokémon. But that was not all.

“How the hell did they get Rayquaza?” Phoebe hissed.
Drake gave her a helpless look. Steven cursed underneath his breath, watching as Registeel collapsed underneath Moltres's Heat Beam and Zapdos's Thunderwave crackled over the assembled men and pokémon.
It was too late.

That afternoon, Houen surrendered, and that night, Lance and Red went home, hailed as heroes, and in the surge of euphoria, no one even cared that they were together.
