Yes, poor Lance. Red really doesn't get it, does he?

Chapter 5

“I give up!”
Lance gave Red a sympathetic smile as the Pallet trainer collapsed against his bed, throwing his hands up in exasperation.
“There is obviously no girl out there who I can date. I've already asked every female gym leader I can think of, and I even tried going out with my fangirls but that was just a flop.”
“What about online dating?” Lance suggested.
“Been there, done that. I might as well resign myself to being single the rest of my life!” Red fumed.
“Maybe you're just too young to think about this.”
“Maybe.” Red did not sound convinced. “Sorry, Lance. I know you've been working really hard trying to find me prospective dates. I do appreciate it.”
“But your standards… aren't they a bit high?”
Red blinked. “Not really. I got rid of a lot of them.”
“I see.”

As Red fumed silently, he watched Lance, feeling guilty. Lance had really worked hard, and now, well….
Now there was nothing to show for his earnest efforts?
That wasn't fair!

Lance turned around then, and Red flushed. Yes, Lance was pretty, pretty enough to be a girl, with pretty eyes and long hair, and he looked good in his beautiful silks, but seriously….
He was not thinking about dating Lance, was he?
But why should he not? They were already friends, so he could skip that step in the dating manual, and … and…
And Lance was hot.

Plus, now that he thought of it, Lance filled a lot of qualifications. He was rich from battling. He was a good trainer - he was Leader of the Elite Four! Lance was also a great cook, and knew how to clean and do laundry, why…
As Red mentally tallied the list he had made, he was shocked.
Lance qualified for almost all of the criteria, more than any girl had!
How strange!

“Lance?”
“Yes, Red?”
Red steeled himself, taking a deep breath. “Will you go out with me?”
“I've been waiting for you to ask that.” Lance said, as he walked over to the bed and pulled Red into a kiss.
Red was startled, but he quickly responded, as he sighed into the kiss, because it really felt nice.
Why had he wasted so much time looking when the person he really liked had been right in front of him all this time?
He didn't know, but he felt pretty foolish.

Lance chuckled, as they broke apart. “So now you know.”
“You like me. You really like me.” Red murmured, before tipping his head up for another kiss.
“Yes.”
“I like you too, Lance. I think I could learn to love you. It's not hard to do.”
“Ahh…”
“And besides,” Red winked, “You're the person who really fits my list!”
Lance coughed, staring, and Red nodded.
“So the person I was destined for was next to me the whole time. Who knew?”
“Fate does work in mysterious ways,” Lance agreed with a secret smile.
And that was that.
