Nine Whole Minutes

One night out at the bar. Three couples, six people.

Couple #1

Kizo + Shojiro

7:00 p.m.

“Something wrong?” Kizo asked. Shojiro shook his head.

“Not really,” he said. The boy swirled his glass around. His girlfriend eyes him.

“Baby?” she asked.

“Just thinking,” he said.

“About…?” Kizo asked. Shojiro pressed his lips together. How was he going to ask this? He might as well do it.

“What do you think of watersports?” Shojiro asked.

“What?” Kizo asked. Her boyfriend played with his glass. He shrugged in thought.

“I don't know,” he said. “Just heard some guys talking about it this morning.” Kizo wrinkled her nose.

“Can't say I'm a fan,” she said. “Do you even know what those are?” Sojiro frowned.

“No…” he said. Kizo was now the one frowning. She wasn't sure if she should say anything or not. Shojiro cocked his head to the side.

“Kizo-chan?” he asked. She set down her glass.

“Pee,” the sophomore said.

“Huh?” her boyfriend asked.

“Watersports is peeing on someone sexually,” she explained. Shojiro gave her a blank look.

“Oh…” was all he could say. That got more awkward than the thought.

Couple #2

Gwen + Jim

7:00 p.m.

It's still awkward between them. Jim cursed himself for still wanting her. Gwen acted just as cold as usual. He followed her into the bar. Funny thing was, she didn't try to stop him. Was she trying to ignore him?

Gwen downed her drink. Jim pressed his lips together. He said something more to himself. She looked out of the corner of her eyes.

“What did you say?” she asked. Jim froze. His body tensed for a second. It just came out in a quick yelp.

“I missed you!” he blurted out. There came a pause. Gwen raised an eyebrow.

“Do you now?” she asked. The boy slowly nodded. Gwen frowned at him, unimpressed.

“Uh-huh,” she said. Jim felt a piece of him die inside. He shouldn't have been surprised. But still…

He lowered his head. “What do I have to do to get you back?” Probably not a good idea to ask her that question. He braced himself for rejection. Gwen picked up her glass and took a drink.

“And why should I do that?” she asked. Jim stared at her, but no words came to his mouth. She didn't take her eyes off him as she set down her glass.

In truth, Gwen missed him too. But she wasn't going to admit that out loud.

Couple #3

Yori + Guy Friend

Sojiro still held her heart and he wasn't coming back. What else could she do? Yori still wasn't over it. Sojiro would forever be her first love. How could anyone top that?

She turned to her current date.

“Um…” Yori said. The handsome junior turned his head.

“Hm?” he asked. She looked him straight in the eye.

“Can you pee on me later?” the girl asked. The boy gave her a weird look.

“What?” he asked. Yori didn't know why she said that. Her date narrowed his eyes.

“Why would you do that?” he asked. Yori bit on her lower lip. There was no answer. She grabbed her glass and downed her drink. Neither one wanted to be there anymore. Yori couldn't let the idea go anymore.

“Although…” she mumbled more to herself.

“No!” he said quickly.

“Okay…” she mumbled. The girl turned her head away. Would it be so bad to get up and leave now? She couldn't help but wonder…
