Chapter One
Divide
`I look utterly ridiculous,' was the Ami's first thought as she nervously ran her hand through her short blue-black locks. Looking at herself in the mirror the Mercury native found that her overall appearance would make it hard for anyone to believe that she was a young man applying to join the military. Her body frame was too short and skinny, plus her face looked kind of soft and babyish, and let's not forget the wide blue doe-like eyes. Turning on her heel she looked at the other `new recruits'. Makoto seemed more adapt to the part they had to play, she was tall and athletic…but in trade off she had to cut off her beautiful ponytail and leave her signature rose earrings at home. Seated on a stool was Minako, who was cringing as Rei began to cut off long strands of her golden hair. The Venusan looked actually pained by the fact she was losing most of her luscious locks. Rei herself had to cut a good portion of her raven hair, she however didn't seemed as bothered by it as Minako was.
“Just don't cut too much off okay Rei?” Minako pleaded as she squirmed in her seat. This caused Rei to prod her into sitting still.
“If you don't stop fidgeting I'll be cutting a bit more off than your hair. Now be still Minako, I am almost done.”
For a moment Ami couldn't help but wonder if this was really worth it? If they got caught not only would they be in trouble since Earthen Code didn't allow women to join in it's military ranks, but also with their Queen because their cover would be blown and would more than likely enter a battle against Earth blind.
Makoto seemed to be thinking along the same lines…or she was thinking about something at least.
At that moment Rei finished cutting Minako's hair. Finally released Minako hoped down from the stool only to gasp as she saw herself in the mirror.
“Rei-chan!” Minako pouted as she ran her right hand over her very short haircut, “You…you butchered it!” the blonde whined.
“I didn't `butcher' it Mina! We all have to have short hair, otherwise we'll give ourselves away. Quit sulking we've got to report to the courtyard for our first briefing.”
With that they lined headed out the door, Makoto in the lead, followed by Rei, a still unhappy Minako, with Ami bringing up the rear. As they walked Ami noticed just how…primitive everything appeared. Being from a planet which prided itself on technological advances it was a bit more than cultural shock to find that the lunar race relied more on magic than technology, and Earth was even more so.
`Well at least they have electricity and running water,' Ami mused as she lagged behind to look at a particularly interesting tapestry hanging on the stone wall. Reaching up Ami gently touched the frayed edges of the piece of cloth. The scene it depicted was positively Midlevel. A towering castle built of stone, being protected from a vicious looking dragon by a group of knights, four of them to be exact. Pulling her gaze away from the tapestry Ami looked at the stone walls and floor to realize that apparently not much has changed for Earth since those days. Even with what little advancements they had accomplished with both technology and magic not much had seemed to be affected, nothing had been forced to change.
Suddenly she looked up to see that the other girls had left her behind.
`Oh god, am I going to get an earful from Rei,' Ami thought as she scrambled down the hallway, trying to find a way to the courtyard. Skidding to a halt Ami accidentally stumbled across the courtyard. Standing in neat rows were young men ranging from mid teens to late twenties. All of them standing at attention and waiting for instruction. It took her a few moments to find the others since they were lined up in the second to the last row. Quickly Ami walked out into the courtyard and managed to squeeze in between Minako and Makoto. Rei was still looking ahead as she whispered.
“Where were you?” she hissed between her teeth.
“I am sorry,” Ami whispered in reply.
“We're supposed to stay together as a group…”
“I know but I got distracted.”
“That's no excuse!” Rei growled.
“Rei, lay off of her. We're all a bit tense but that doesn't mean you get to chew her out.” Makoto replied with equal venom.
Ami rolled her eyes wondering just how Queen Serenity expected them to accomplish anything as a `team' if all four of them had met less than a day before they were shipped off to Earth.
`This is going to be a looonnng six months,' Ami mused.
The entire courtyard went silent as four men walked in. Each of them wore gray uniforms with capes of varying colors, each of them looked to be in their mid-twenties.
The four of them stood in front of the lines of new recruits. At the end of their group Minako hissed.
“Look at that! At least three of them have long hair! Rei why couldn't you have left my hair just a little bit longer? Shoulder length would have been nice.”
“Shhh”Rei hissed at Minako.
Ami had to agree with Minako that three of the four generals had long hair. The one wearing the dark blue cape had deep brown hair which went a little bit over shoulder length. The one standing next to him wearing a green cape had long strawberry hair tied back in a ponytail similar to Makoto's. And the last one to enter wearing a gray cape had shoulder length platinum blonde hair.
`Better stay away from him,' Ami mentally noted as she stared at the stern looking general. It was blatantly obvious that he was the ring leader. He looked at the recruits with a calculating gaze which made her feel that to this man, they were nothing more than cattle. Fresh meat to be tossed out into the fray of battle.
He turned and subtlety nodded to the other three. Each of them took a row of recruits, looking them over, pausing to ask questions of a few others.
“All I am saying Rei is that you could have been a bit more lenient with my hair. I look like a misfit with my hair this short!”
“Will you stop whining for five minutes? Our row is up next for examination…”
Suddenly someone to the right cleared their throat. All four of them turned their heads to look to see the stern white-haired general glaring down at them. Ami shrank slightly and leaned closer to Makoto than she had intended and almost knocked the taller girl over.
“If the two of you have finished your conversation then maybe you would like to hear your assignments…if not I am sure that we can always send you home so that you may finish your banter.”
Rei, who had appointed herself as our unofficial spokesperson cleared her throat, forcing herself to sound more masculine and said, “No sir. We're sorry sir, it won't happen again.”
His cold gaze lingered on them, almost as if he knew that something wasn't right. For a split second Ami worried that he might figure out that they were not guys and would expose them for it. Instead he merely looked bored and uninterested as he rattled off who their commanders would be and their duties for the next few weeks.
“You,” he pointed at Minako, “will be in my division. Training starts this afternoon. Don't be late.”
Minako swallowed a large lump in her throat and suddenly looked very pale.
The general pointed at Rei next, “You will be in Jadeite's division. Report to him as to what time your training sessions will be.”
Rei silently nodded and broke rank, heading to the young man with short curly blonde hair.
Makoto was next, her assignment was to General Nephrite and as with Rei she would have to report to him as to what would be expected of her.
This left Ami.
He gave her a hard glance. She couldn't help but fidget her feet, still her eyes never left his gaze. She had to look confident, she had to look composed even if she was scared to death of being found out.
“You look rather puny to be a solider” he commented
Ami forced herself to bite her tongue on the matter, otherwise she would end up speaking up and find herself in trouble.
Glancing over a sheet of paper that had the four divisions he thoughtfully glanced up at Ami and back to the page.
“You'll be placed in Zoicite's division. Report to him for your assignment.”
Not trusting herself to conjure up a convincing masculine voice as Rei did she merely nodded and scurried away to find General Zoicite.
`I'll say it again, this is going to be a long six months.' Ami said to herself as she walked across the courtyard.
Notes: I know it's not very funny or exciting now but if you'll stick with it for a few more chapters I promise you that you won't be disappointed. Ja ne!
