My Master
From Sanzo to Koumyou

Koumyou Sanzo
That is what you were called
Called and known by
My dear master
You found me in a river
You found “Kouryuu”
Or as the other monks called me
“The river urchin”
How I hated that name
I was grateful for my new name
“Genjo Sanzo”
There was only one opinion that I valued
And that was yours
To me, you were so easy to respect
Every time you spoke I listened
Your words always held meaning to me
Life is funny in a way
When you found me
No one said you had to keep me
According to you, it felt like I was calling you
After you found me, I stopped calling
As if I had found “home”
Home was there
Home was with you my master
And you...my father
You were my father figure
My one and only
You were so brave and strong
Especially on that night
When they attacked
You threw yourself in front of me
To shield me and keep me safe
Even at the cost of your own life
They stole one sutra
Only one
For I had made out with the other one, and a title too
The title you gave me
“Genjyo Sanzo”
I will never forget you master
True, you were a bit odd
But so am I
All of those bald-headed geezers say I resembled you
In stature and appearance of course
Our manner of speech is quite different
You were gentle and polite
While I am rough and rude
After that night, I chose to not let anyone or anything come close to me
I didn’t want to relieve that
But now, that’s starting to change
All because of one stupid monkey
Who couldn’t stop calling me
Who couldn’t shut the hell up
Yet all I can say now is...
Koumyou Sanzo

I shall never forget you
Nor will I ever try to be you
