Surge and Kit dropped their backpacks, which contained everything they owned, onto the floor of Starline’s abandoned base.

 “Okay, now that we moved out of Eggman’s base, we can start looking for new jobs.” Surge said. “Then, maybe we can get a better place than Starline’s abandoned base.”

 “That would be cool.” Kit replied. He walked around their old room. “But we could fix this place up a bit and it would be just fine. A fresh coat of paint or maybe some wallpaper.”

 Surge shuddered as memories of Starline’s abuse flashed through her mind.

 “Some new curtains and furniture.” Kit continued. “Oh! We can get some cool signs at Five Below or Hobby Lobby to hang up. I think there’s a few pop culture stores at the mall too.”

 “I don’t want to live here long term.” Surge said. She tossed her hands up. “Look at this place. We didn’t even have our own rooms.”

 Kit shrugged. “You had a changing curtain.”

 Surge sighed. “I still don’t want to share a room with you.” She replied. “You think Sonic and Tails share a room? I mean, I know they’re both guys, but still.”

 “I don’t know where they live.” Kit said. “Well, you can take Starline’s room or I can take it. We can sell his tech to Tails.”

 “No, Egghead raided the place already.” Surge replied.

 “But it’s still here, I checked while you were in the bathroom earlier.” Kit said.

 “Get our bags and let’s go.” Surge replied. “We’ll go to the homeless shelter.”

 Surge led Kit, who was carrying his and Surge’s bags, out of the base.

 Surge and Kit arrived at their new apartment at the Mobotropolis homeless shelter. 

 It was a little one bedroom, one bathroom place with a kitchenette and a futon in the living room.

 “Sweet setup.” Surge said. “Not sure we can paint the place, but we could buy some signs at Five Below. The other places are too expensive right now.”

 Kit set the bags down. “But we should get jobs and more food before we start decorating.”

 “Right.” Surge said, sitting on the couch. “What are we qualified for?”

 Kit sat down beside Surge. “Minimum wage jobs, I guess?”

 “It’s a start.” Surge said. “Okay. Let’s see what’s hiring.”

 Surge pulled her phone out and started looking for job listings. “Wow, a lot of places are hiring.”

 Kit pulled his phone out as well and started looking for job listings. “I don’t know if I want to hold up a sign on the side of the road.”

 “That’s our last ditch effort.” Surge replied.

 Kit furrowed his brow. “I thought our last ditch effort was to post weird pictures online.”

 “No.” Surge said, smacking Kit. “We are not that desperate, Drippy. I will… I dunno, wear a chicken suit and dance on the side of the road before I do that.”

 “Yeah, I agree.” Kit replied. 

 “Okay, apply for every reasonable job you see.” Surge said.

 Surge and Kit started applying for every job that was offered on the website.
