Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ A New Leaf ❯ Jobs from hell ( Chapter 6 )
Surge walked across the greasy floor of Mobotropolis Wendy’s for her second day on the job, hoping her work shoes would really prevent her from slipping. She cringed as she noticed the roof leaking water onto the salads. “I’ll never eat here again.” She thought. She took her place at the window.
A customer pulled up.
Surge fake smiled. “Welcome to Wendy’s. May I take your order?”
“Let me get a whopper and fries with a coke.” The male said.
“Sir, this is a Wendy’s.” Surge replied.
“So?” The male asked. “Just get me my order.”
Surge heard him making filthy remarks about her, then nodded. “Alright, sir. That’ll be eight, fifty.” She replied. “Please pull around.”
The car pulled away.
“Enjoy your rain water burger and fries.” Surge muttered.
*
Manic, Sonia, and Sonic drove through Mobotropolis.
“Hey, let’s stop in at Wendy’s and see Surge.” Manic said.
“I don’t eat fried foods, Manic.” Sonia protested. “You know it makes me sick.”
“They have baked potatoes and salads, sis.” Manic said.
“Fine, I’ll take a salad.” Sonia replied.
Manic pulled the car into the Wendy’s parking lot. He pulled through the drive thru and waited at the speaker.
“Not another one.” Surge groaned. “Ugh, my boyfriend better get rich and famous soon.”
“Hey, I thought you weren’t a gold digger.” Manic said, smirking.
“…Manic?” Surge asked. “Look, I don’t care if we live in a box as long as I don’t have to do this again.”
“I’ll make sure you have a nice box.” Manic said, trying not to laugh.
“So are you here to order or to rescue me?” Surge asked.
Manic shrugged. “Here to order, but if you need to be rescued….”
“Guess I gotta finish my shift though.” Surge muttered. “Anyway?”
“One small chili and fries.” Manic said.
“Okay.” Surge replied.
“One burger with fries; a salad.” Manic said.
“Don’t get a salad.” Surge replied. “They’re nasty.”
“Uh, what about a baked potato with sour cream?” Manic asked.
“Yeah, that’s fine.” Surge replied. “Any drinks?”
“Three small teas.” Manic said.
“Okay, that’s twenty-eight even.” Surge replied. “Please pull around.”
“We’re not eating here again.” Sonia and Sonic said as Manic pulled the car around.
Surge was at the window quietly making the drinks.
“You are so cute in your uniform.” Manic said, grinning. He gave Surge the money.
Surge gave Manic his change, then handed him the drinks. “You’re sweet.”
Manic handed Sonia and Sonic their drinks.
“Don’t pull away yet.” Surge said, handing Manic the bag. She pulled off her headset. “I quit, losers!”
Surge dived into Manic’s car.
“Hey!” Sonia protested.
Manic helped Surge move to the back seat, then pulled away. “You okay?”
Surge buckled her seatbelt. “Yeah, that place is a nightmare.”
“What was wrong with the salad?” Sonia asked.
“The roof leaks right over them.” Surge replied.
“Eww!” Sonia cried.
“Ugh, is our food safe?” Sonic asked.
“Yeah, we made fresh food for you.” Surge replied.
“Even for me?” Sonic asked.
“Yeah, I called truce, didn’t I?” Surge asked.
“Better not list them for references, babe.” Manic said, glancing in the rear view mirror. “That stunt will mess up your chances at a new job.”
Surge groaned. “It’ll be easy, he said.” She ranted. “You can start over, reinvent yourself. You are full of it, Sonic. I think you’ve taken too many hits to the head when you spin dash robots.”
“I didn’t think you couldn’t handle a menial job.” Sonic protested. “My old dog Muttski could’ve run that job.”
“You know who I worked for before.” Surge replied.
“Okay, so it’s harder than I thought it’d be for you.” Sonic said. “We’ll find something for you, okay? Just… try to be more social or something.”
“I don’t understand.” Surge said, slumping in her seat. “Kit got a job easily. What’s wrong with me?”
“Kit is so timid and polite.” Manic replied. “That’s probably why.”
“He’s not so timid if you cross Surge or he’s asked to kill you.” Sonic said, opening his chili container.
Manic furrowed his brow. “Babe, are you sure you’re like brother and sister?” He asked. “Does he know that’s how you feel?”
“Yeah and he knows that.” Surge replied. “So you three don’t look out for each other at all?”
“Right, sorry about that.” Manic said. “Anyway, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you. You’re just not used to doing the interviews or dealing with Mobians.”
“Well, stupid ones anyway.” Surge replied. “I think the world’s full of idiots.”
Sonic shook his head. “I can’t even… Surge, did you want to be a villain for the rest of your life?”
“I don’t know.” Surge said, shrugging weakly. “Not really, but I don’t fit in anywhere. I can’t hold down a job, Starline should’ve just shut me down.”
Manic hit the brakes harder than he meant to when they stopped at the light. “Don’t talk like that.” He said, looking back at Surge. “It’s just a rough patch and I’ll help you through it, okay? You held down one job until I got you fired. You’re not as incapable as you feel right now.”
Sonia nodded in agreement.
“Thanks, Manic.” Surge said.
“I don’t even like you, but I don’t want you to feel like that.” Sonic said.
Surge looked at Sonic. “F’real?”
Sonic nodded. “You didn’t deserve any of what Starline put you through.” He replied. “That’s why I tried to help you.”
“Thanks.” Surge said, smiling weakly. “That… uh… that means a lot coming from you.”
Manic pulled away from the light. “Do you feel like hanging out or do you wanna go home and relax?”
“I guess I’ll go home.” Surge said, glancing at her phone. “Kit’s home and he brought dinner.”
“Okay, then.” Manic replied. “But if you need to talk or anything, I’m here.”
“I know; I appreciate it.” Surge said.
*
Surge shuffled through the door, typing on her phone.
Kit was at the table, eating a chicken sandwich he brought home. “I brought you the new jalapeño ranch club sandwich.” He said. “It’s really good. I figured you’d need it after today.”
“Sounds good.” Surge muttered. “Thanks.”
Surge got her sandwich and joined Kit at the table. “Well, I did get a new job and I’m gonna hate it.”
“What is it?” Kit asked.
“Advertising for the new chicken restaurant in the strip mall.” Surge replied.
“That sounds nice.” Kit said, smiling.
Surge nodded tersely. “Uh-huh, whatever.” She muttered. She tasted her sandwich. “It’s actually pretty good.”
Kit nodded. “It’s my favorite thing on the menu aside from the frosted coffee.” He replied. “So do you need a ride to work? When do you start?”
“I start tomorrow.” Surge said. “I don’t need a ride. I can run to work.”
Kit furrowed his brow. “Are you sure?” He asked. “It’s supposed to rain tomorrow.”
Surge groaned. “I said I didn’t need a ride.”
Kit pinned his ears back. “Okay, I’m sorry.”
“I really don’t want anyone to really know what I’m doing.” Surge thought.
*
Surge, dressed in a bright yellow and red chicken suit, stood on the side of the road with a sign advertising the restaurant.
She was surprised she made it to day two, especially after she stood in the rain for part of the day yesterday.
She was told by her new boss to be energetic and friendly, but the best she could muster was a low energy shuffle and a few halfhearted waves at passing cars. Since no other place was hiring, she had to resist the urge to flip off or curse at some of the more rude passersby.
She did a double take as Manic came by on his hoverboard.
Manic stopped, nearly falling off his hoverboard. “Babe?”
“Don’t laugh.” Surge said, rolling her eyes upward.
Manic smirked. “Actually, you’re pretty cute like this.”
Surge sighed. “Please don’t tell me you got some sort of fetish about this.” She replied. “I don’t think I can handle it today.”
Manic gave Surge a dumbfounded look. “…That is not why I said that.” He said. “I was trying to cheer you up, not make both of us feel weird.”
“I’m sorry.” Surge replied. “So why are you here?”
“Sonic’s team was assimilated into GUN.” Manic said. “So we get paid and benefits for fighting Egghead and whoever’s a serious threat.”
“Good for you, but I can’t join.” Surge said flatly.
“No, but our band is taking off too.” Manic replied. “You can handle the social media aspects with Sally. Amy’s our manager and she said she’d take Kit on as her personal assistant.”
“So I can quit?” Surge asked.
“Yeah, but I’d give the guy two weeks notice.” Manic replied.
Surge gave Manic a look.
Manic sighed. “Do what you want then, babe.”
Surge ran inside, then came back out ten minutes later dressed in an old shirt, joggers, and high top sneakers.
“Want to get some sushi to celebrate?” Manic asked.
Surge got ready to run. “Race you there.” She replied. She ran off with Manic following close behind her.
