Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ A New Leaf ❯ Two weeks later ( Chapter 5 )
Manic huffed as he shuffled into the house.
“What’s wrong?” Sonia asked.
“Got fired.” Manic muttered. He flopped down on the couch between his siblings. “The owner somehow found out I was dating an employee. Surge chewed out our boss because she didn’t think it was fair since she didn’t think it was inappropriate if we mutually agreed to date of our own free will.”
“You were probably obvious about it at work.” Sonic said. “You may as well be floating around with hearts in your eyes like in a cartoon anytime you’re near her.”
Manic rolled his eyes. “I’m a professional at work, bro.”
“Oh, you are?” Sonic asked. “I had Shadow and Kit go in there with body cams and-”
Manic sat up. “It was you.” He snapped. “You got me fired.”
Sonic shook his head. “No, I was just doing that to try to talk sense into your thick skull to keep you from being fired.”
“To be fair, the store probably has cameras, Manic.” Sonia said.
Manic smacked his hand over his face. “Oh, man, how did I forget that?” He asked. “I set the cameras up.”
“How do you not realize flirting with her, playing with her spines, and hugging her on the clock wasn’t professional?” Sonic asked.
Manic slumped in his seat. “Well, it wasn’t like it went further than that.”
Sonia covered her face with her hand as she shook her head. “Still….”
“This is the first time in my life that I’m questioning whether you’re really my brother or my real brother was switched with you at the hospital.” Sonic said.
“We weren’t born in a hospital.” Manic replied. “We were born at Ma’s house because of that snowstorm.”
“No, we weren’t.” Sonic said.
“Yes, we were; Ask Mother.” Sonia replied.
Sonic pulled his phone out of his pocket. “I’m calling Mom.” He said. He called Aleena and put the phone on speaker.
“Don’t tell her I got fired.” Manic replied.
“Relax.” Sonic said.
“Hello?” Aleena asked.
“Hey, Mom.” Sonic replied. “Are you busy?”
“No, I’m just trying to learn how to knit and I need a break.” Aleena said. “Are you all okay?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to ask you something.” Sonic said. “Manic and Sonia said we were born at your house and not at the hospital. There’s no way that happened, right?”
“Unfortunately, yes, it did.” Aleena replied. “We usually don’t get snow in March here, especially that much. So no one thought it would be as bad and that the snow and ice would melt quickly. It didn’t. They said it was the worst snowstorm in fifty years. I hadn’t seen one that bad since then.”
Manic and Sonia gave Sonic smug looks.
“So the phones went out during the afternoon before you all were born, I figured they’d have it fixed by the morning and went to bed.” Aleena continued. “Went into labor at two in the morning and the phones were still out. Thankfully, the fire I built kept going, so I didn’t have to worry… well, I wasn’t worried about it until after all three of you got here, but you understand.”
Sonic winced. “Oh, man, I’m so sorry.”
“That’s not your fault.” Aleena said. “So is that all you needed?”
“Oh, Manic lost his job because he was dating an employee.” Sonic said, putting the phone on speaker. “I figured you’d like to scold him. You’re on speaker.”
Manic punched Sonic’s arm.
Sonic hissed and rubbed his arm. “And he punched me.”
“Snitch.” Manic muttered.
Aleena groaned. “Manic.”
“I’m too old to be scolded about this, Ma.” Manic said.
“I thought you had better sense than to do that, but I guess we were both wrong.” Aleena replied. “What were you thinking?”
“That she was insanely cute.” Manic said.
Aleena sighed.
“I couldn’t turn her down for the job, then ask her out.” Manic said.
“You blurted out almost immediately that you liked her.” Sonia said.
“She better be awfully special for you to do something this stupid, Manic.” Aleena said.
“Oh, she’s certainly special.” Sonic replied. “Remember that girl who tried to electrocute me? It’s the same girl Manic is being stupid for.”
“She was forced into that.” Manic protested. “Give her a break; she’s trying to reform and she’s called a truce with him.”
“Well… I guess it’s not any different than him befriending Knuckles and Sonia dating Shadow.” Aleena said.
Sonic groaned.
“Anyway, my neighbor has a locksmithing business and is looking for a new guy.” Aleena said. “I’ll put in a good word for you.”
“Thanks, Ma.” Manic replied. He checked his watch. “I’ll talk to you later, I gotta help Surge find a job.”
“Okay, I’ll see you later.” Aleena said.
Sonic hung up.
“See you, I gotta help Surge.” Manic said, getting up.
“Have fun.” Sonic and Sonia replied.

~meanwhile~
Surge slumped on the bar across from Kit.
“You got fired or Manic dumped you?” Kit asked.
“I got fired because I yelled at the boss for firing Manic.” Surge replied.
“I knew that would happen.” Kit said, pinning his ears back.
“So why didn’t you say anything?” Surge asked.
“I… I was going to, but… you seem so happy with Manic.” Kit replied. “You two are so cute together.”
“I don’t get it.” Surge said. “It’s not like I was coerced. I even told the boss that.”
“Yeah, but… at times, you two were a few steps away from needing to get a room.” Kit replied.
Surge sighed.
“Do you want to go to the grocery store with me?” Kit asked. “We can get ice cream.”
“Pass, but you could bring me home one of those pepperoni calzones I like and some mango strawberry gelato.” Surge said.
Kit got up. “Sure.” He replied. “We can have a movie night.”
“Get a little extra then.” Surge said. “Manic’s coming by to help me with the job search. Maybe he’ll want to stay for the movie.”
“Okay, see you later.” Kit replied. He got up, grabbed his keys off the mail rack, and left.
Surge got up to change into an old shirt and joggers.

Manic and Surge sat at the bar, looking at job listings on Manic’s laptop.
“Uh… Taco Bell is hiring.” Manic said.
“Pass.” Surge replied. “The smell of that place is nauseating.”
“Alright, the movie theater?” Manic asked. “You can run the projector.”
“Eh… what if I have to run it for a Final Destination movie?” Surge asked.
“You hate those movies too?” Manic asked.
Surge nodded.
“Can’t blame you.” Manic said. “Uh, the donut shop.”
“I have a thing about them.” Surge replied. “You’ll think it’s stupid.”
Manic sighed. “What’s wrong with donut shops?”
“I had a nightmare about one.” Surge said. “You ever seen ‘attack of the killer donuts’?”
Manic furrowed his brow. “That? It looked so fake and the scene where the zombie guy dies was gross.”
Kit walked in.
“I was a little kid and it scared me.” Surge snapped.
“The donut movie?” Kit asked. He shook his head. “That was a disgusting movie.”
Manic glanced at Kit. “Okay, where can she work?”
“The Wendy’s across the street from the mall is hiring.” Kit said.
Surge sighed. “It’ll do.”
Manic rubbed Surge’s shoulder. “Maybe something better will come along soon.”
Surge half smiled. “I hope so.”
