Shadow and the rest of the group met up with Team Sonic at the gate of Robotnik’s fortress.
“What’s this about?” Amy asked. “Why are we fighting GUN when we work for them?”
“Robotnik supplies GUN with robots and drones, while they let Sonic deal with it.” Tails said, looking at his communicator. “Sonic was specifically chosen for the Robotnik assignments because he could effectively fight him and because of his unwillingness to kill him.”
“I told you.” Surge snapped. “I told you not to let him keep getting away with it. Just like you piddled around with Starline.”
“What even happened to Starline?” Sonic asked.
Surge eased behind Manic.
“Oh, why am I not surprised.” Sonic muttered.
A few drones flew out.
“Take those out.” Shadow said. “Surge, Manic, come with me.”
Manic unlocked the door. “Let’s go.”

Shadow, Manic, and Surge made their way through the corridors of Robotnik’s fortress.
“Man, this place is huge.” Manic said. “How does he keep from getting lost?”
A door slammed ahead.
“Coward.” Shadow muttered. “Manic?”
Manic touched the door lock.
Electricity surged through the lock, knocking Manic backward.
Manic landed on the floor.
“Manic!” Surge yelled as she ran over to Manic.
Manic slowly sat up. “‘M fine. I saw my dad and a bright light, but I’m fine.”
Surge helped Manic up.
“I got this.” Shadow replied. “Get him out.”
Surge walked Manic out.
Shadow pulled his gun out of his shoulder holster and shot the lock.
The door flew open, revealing a wide eyed Robotnik sitting at his desk.
“That company said the lock was bulletproof.” Robotnik bellowed.
“Too bad, you’re not dealing with Sonic.” Shadow said. “Erase those orders. Now.”
Robotnik got on his computer and erased the orders. “There. Now leave.”
Shadow aimed his gun at Robotnik.
Robotnik scoffed. “You know that will just undo what I did, right?”
A grenade flew into the room.
Shadow ran off as it was about to explode. He glanced back at the room. “Gotta be Surge.” He muttered.

Shadow met the rest of the team outside the house. “What was that about Surge?”
“What are you talking about?” Surge asked. “I’ve been with Manic while Tails checked him out.”
“I did it.” Knuckles said. “The roboticizer is in there. Rouge is blowing up the rest of the place since you’re out.”
The house blew up as Rouge flew over.
“Our work here is done.” Surge said, dusting her hands off.
“Have some respect for the dead, Surge.” Sonic replied. “Don’t be like Egghead.”
“That was respect.” Surge said, crossing her arms.
Manic nodded.
Sonic sighed. “Alright, let’s go.”

Shadow and Sonia arrived at Aleena’s house.
Maria and Muttski were asleep on the couch while Uncle Chuck was asleep in the recliner.
“Hey, I saw the news.” Aleena said, getting off the couch. “Where are your brothers, Sally, and Surge?”
“Back at the air bnb.” Sonia replied. “The rest of the team went home.”
Shadow and Sonia sat down on the loveseat.
Sonia leaned against Shadow. “What about Maria?”
“I promised Gerald I’d look after her if anything happened to him.” Shadow said, stroking Sonia’s spines.
Sonia nodded. “You can help her fix up the guest room.” She replied. “It’s your turn to babysit Muttski anyway.”
“You two can head out tomorrow.” Aleena said. “You can stay in your old room, Princess. Maria and Muttski will take Sonic’s room.”
Sonia yawned. “Thanks, Mother.”
Shadow glanced at Sonia, then got up. “I guess we’ll go to sleep.” He said, picking up Sonia.
“Good night.” Aleena replied.
Shadow carried Sonia to her old room and laid her in the bed. He stepped over to close the door, then laid down beside Sonia.
Sonia snuggled against Shadow as he put his arm around her.
Shadow stroked Sonia’s spines until she fell asleep.
