Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Road trip ❯ The beginning ( Chapter 1 )
Manic sat in the van outside of Sonia and Shadow’s house, bright and early that morning. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel as he waited for them to come out.
Manic’s phone rang.
Manic sighed and answered the phone. “Yeah, Knux, I know we need to get on the road.” He said. “They’re taking forever to get ready.”
“Well, we’re already halfway there, so we'll check in.” Knuckles replied. “Tails is a little worried that you all won’t be here in time for the science awards ceremony.”
“We’ll get there.” Manic said. “I’ll hurry them up. It’s not like we really have to stop for a hotel anyway.”
“Alright, see you.” Knuckles replied. He hung up.
Manic blew the horn.
Sonic and Shadow came out with their bags.
Sonic ran over to the van.
Shadow stopped and stuck his head back in the door. “Sonia, your-”
Manic blew the horn again. “C’mon, I’m-”
“Don’t say it.” Sonic said, stuffing his and Sally’s bag into the van.
“Same goes for you, Sonic.” Shadow said, walking over to the van. “Both of you are getting on my nerves this morning.”
Sonic rolled his eyes.
Sonia, who was carrying an extra bag, and Sally walked out of the house.
“Knock it off, Manic.” Sonia said. “We’re coming.”
“Why do you need three bags, including your purse, sis?” Sonic asked.
“The second bag is for Shadow’s skin care routine.” Sonia replied.
“I… I had a hundred jokes for that, but my brain froze and I can’t remember them.” Sonic said. He dusted off his hands. “Alright, let’s get moving.”
Manic stuck his head out the window. “Finally!”
Sonia set her bags in the back of the van. “Why is Manic driving?”
“He’s not the worst driver ever.” Sonic replied. “Besides, it’s not like he’s driving in the big cities.”
“Come on.” Manic said. “Knuckles already called saying that Tails is worried we’ll miss his award ceremony.”
Manic winced as he looked at the fuel tank gauge. “I hate to say this, but we need to stop for gas.”
“We’ll still get there in time since we’re not stopping at a hotel.” Sonic replied. “I need to stretch my legs and I think we’re all hungry. Sonia’s stomach has been growling for the past thirty miles.”
Sonia elbowed Sonic in his ribs.
Sonic hissed and rubbed his side.
“I was thinking we could try new places instead of going to some fast food places we can go to anywhere.” Sally said. She glanced at Sonic. “Try to eat something besides chili dogs, Sonic.”
“Fine.” Sonic muttered.
Manic pulled the van into the parking lot of a gas station and diner. “Here, this is perfect.”
Manic flipped through the menu. “Ooh, the pizza burger sounds good.”
“Ugh.” Sonia muttered.
“Ooh, chili dogs.” Sonic said.
“Sonic.” Sally scolded.
“Okay, I’ll get a salsa dog.” Sonic replied. “You didn’t say I couldn’t get any other kind of dog.”
Sally rolled her eyes. “You’re the master of finding loopholes, I’ll give you that.”
“I’m thinking of getting the turkey sausage omelet.” Sonia said, closing the menu. “What are you getting, Shadow?”
“Strawberry pancakes.” Shadow replied.
Sonic angled himself to face Sally. “Okay. You complain about me and my chili dogs, but you never say anything to Manic and he always makes questionable food choices. We have to ride with him.”
Sally sighed. “He’s my brother-in-law. I can’t tell him what to do.” She replied. “You either for that matter. You do what you want without even considering anything that I say.”
Shadow got in the driver’s seat and buckled in. He looked at the maps app on Manic’s phone. “Manic, how do you work this thing?”
“I’ll handle it.” Sonia said.
“Okay… we’ve got four hours to get there.” Shadow said, starting the van. “We can’t make any more stops.”
Sonic put his phone back into his hoodie’s pocket. “Yeah, Tails is going nuts about us being there.”
“Tell him we’re on our way.” Shadow said, pulling the car back onto the street.
“I did.” Sonic replied.
After an hour, Shadow glanced at Sonia, who was rubbing her temples.
“What’s wrong?” Shadow asked.
“I have a bad headache.” Sonia muttered. “I think there was too much salt in the turkey sausage. Sonic, can you handle the phone?”
“Sure, sis.” Sonic replied. He reset the app. “There. It had to recalculate its route.”
Sally handed Sonia a couple of aspirin. “Here you go, Sonia.”
Sonia took the pills. “Thanks, Sally.”
“Can we please stop for a minute?” Manic asked. “Just pull over on the side of the road. l-”
“No, we have to be at the air bnb.” Shadow replied.
“But I have to pee.” Manic replied. “Just stop for two minutes, I’m begging you.”
“Then use a bottle.” Shadow said, glancing in the rear view mirror.
“I’m not peeing in a bottle in front of Sally and Sonia.” Manic protested.
“Trust me, we’re not looking.” Sonia said.
Sally nodded.
“Excuse me?” Sonic asked.
“What?” Manic asked.
Sonic shook his head. “I don’t want you peeing in front of me either.”
“I don’t either.” Manic replied. “Just… I don’t know. Please, Shadow. I have to-”
“I am not stopping, Manic.” Shadow said, raising his voice. “You either pee in a bottle or you’ll need a catheter when I’m done with you.”
Sonic handed Manic an empty soda bottle with a lid on it. “Make sure you put the cap on really well.”
Manic sighed as he took the bottle.
