Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Road trip ❯ On the way home ( Chapter 4 )
Manic and Shadow walked toward the gas station somewhere in East Mobius.
“It’s March.” Manic said. “Why do they have merry Christmas signs still up?”
“Judging by the overwhelmingly strong scent of pot, I’m guessing the employees got high and forgot to clean the sign off.” Shadow replied. He opened the door and walked in with Manic.
Manic did a double take and motioned to a rack. “They sell lingerie in gas stations here?” He whispered.
Shadow shrugged.
Manic blushed as Shadow paid for the gas with his credit card.
Shadow glanced at Manic. “Get your mind out of the gutter, Manic.”
Manic shook his head. “Sorry.”
Shadow looked out the window, then grabbed Manic’s arm and dragged him out of the store.
“Dude, what’s your deal?” Manic asked.
“A car that passed by had a swastika painted on it.” Shadow whispered.
Manic’s eyes widened.
Manic and Shadow climbed into the van.
“We need to get out of this sketchy town as soon as possible.” Shadow said, buckling his seatbelt.
Sonic started the van. “Oh, because of the Nazi car?”
“That too.” Manic replied.
Sonic pulled the car onto the freeway.
“What happened in the store?” Sonia asked.
“I have never seen a gas station that sells lingerie.” Shadow replied.
Sally, Sonic, and Sonia laughed.
“Who would buy that in a gas station?” Sonic asked.
Manic started laughing hysterically.
“What’s so funny, bro?” Sonic asked.
Shadow glanced at Manic. “Are you high?”
Sonic groaned. “Manic, you swore you didn’t do that.”
“No, the whole store reeked of pot.” Shadow said. “So, if he is, it’s not his fault.”
Manic doubled over laughing.
Sonia sighed. “At least he’s not sick or paranoid.”
A few hours later, Sonic slowed the van to a stop behind a line of cars and trucks.
“What are we stopping for?” Shadow asked.
“Maybe there was an accident ahead.” Sonic said, unbuckling his seatbelt. “I’ll check it out.”
Sonic got out and raced off.
The others used that opportunity to get out and stretch.
Manic leaned on the guard wall and motioned to a little church nestled in the side of a mountain. “Dude, you’d have to be extremely devout to climb that mountain to go to church every week.”
“You do realize that your surfer… valley… or whatever accent is why people think you’re a stoner.” Shadow replied.
“Really?” Manic asked.
Sally and Sonia nodded.
“Huh.” Manic replied.
Sonic caught up to them again.
“So what happened?” Sonia asked.
“I saw a cop car, but nothing else.” Sonic replied.
“Huh.” Shadow muttered. “That’s weird.”
Sonic smacked the steering wheel. “We’ve been stuck here for two hours.”
“Let’s switch seats while we wait.” Shadow said.
Sonic and Shadow got out and switched seats.
“They’re moving, bro.” Manic said, turning off his phone.
Shadow started the van and slowly drove it down the road.
Manic took his earbuds out and put them back in his backpack. “I don’t see any signs of a wreck or road repairs, do you?”
“Not at all.” Sonic replied.
“I don’t either.” Shadow said. He sighed. “They may as well be stopped if they’re just gonna drag themselves down the road.”
“Don’t jinx it.” Manic groaned. “I’ve been sitting here so long, I literally can’t feel my butt.”
Sonic burst out laughing.
Manic laughed and playfully smacked Sonic. “It’s not funny, bro.”
Sonia stretched her arms. “We have two of the fastest beings alive in the van and we’re stuck in traffic.”
“We can’t leave the van.” Sonic replied. “The traffic is moving, maybe they’ll speed up soon.”
“Move!” Shadow yelled. He gripped the steering wheel hard enough to bend it. “Where did they learn to drive?”
“They’re gawking at the construction work.” Sally replied.
Manic scoffed. “Like that’s anything interesting to look at.”
“Now I understand why anyone gets road rage.” Shadow muttered.
Manic’s eyes widened. “You mean you didn’t have road rage before?”
Sonia giggled.
“I kept thinking you were gonna go all John Wick on them.” Sonic said, grinning.
Manic laughed.
“I can see the headlines.” Sonic said, trying not to laugh. “Hedgehog snaps in a fit of road rage; kills eight with a street sign he ripped out of the ground.”
Everyone except Shadow laughed.
Shadow huffed. “If you keep on, the headlines will say two hedgehogs died after annoying their brother-in-law.”
Sonic and Manic flinched.
“Sorry,” They said.
Sonic leaned against the door. “I understand, Shadow. I felt like spin dashing the cars while we were stopped.”
Shadow pulled the van into his and Sonia’s driveway and parked it.
“Oh, it’s so great to be home.” Sonia said, smiling.
Everyone got out and stretched.
Sonic got his and Sally’s bag out of the van. “We still have to drive to our homes.”
Manic sighed. “Great. More time in the car.” He said flatly.
“You can give me the key and I’ll drive it home tomorrow.” Sonic replied. “I’ll take you home on foot after I take Sally and our bags home.”
Manic fist bumped Sonic. “Thanks, bro.”
Sonic turned around. “Shadow and Sonia went inside already?”
Sally shrugged. “I thought I heard them say goodbye.”
“Can’t blame them for wanting to hurry up and go inside.” Sonic said.
