Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Suing Starline ❯ The ad ( Chapter 1 )
Surge seethed as she listened to Tails rattle on about how one of her cyborganic parts was obsolete over the phone. “Well, can’t you find a third party replacement?”
Kit glanced at Surge.
“Unfortunately, not.” Tails said as Surge got out of her chair. “I can’t even downgrade to a lower grade part. I’ll have to completely remove the part and wipe the programming for it so you won’t keep getting error signals or waste power from your system trying to activate it or from the error messages.”
Surge started pacing across hers and Kit’s living room. “So you mean to say I’ll have to deal with pain, exhaustion, and average healing time for the rest of my life?”
“I’m very sorry, Surge.” Tails replied. “I tried everything, even trying to rebuild it from scratch by studying the part from the last time I replaced it. I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it to work at all.”
“You made a fake Chaos Emerald and you can’t make the stupid part?” Surge asked.
Tails sighed. “Yes, but I haven’t been able to replicate it in a while, even with my extensive notes.” He replied. “Chaos energy is highly unstable and, frankly, I don’t have the patience to go through that trial and error process again. Anyway, I don’t know what tech Starline had used to make that thing. I’ve studied a ton of his, Eggman’s, and other advanced tech from a variety of cultures and none of it comes close to explaining it. It’s like trying to figure out how they built the pyramids or the ancient embalming techniques from Hamarapi.”
“Thanks for nothing.” Surge sneered. She cursed as she hung up the phone.
“I know you’re frustrated, but you were pretty rude to Tails.” Kit said. “He did try to help you.”
Surge sighed as she flopped down on the couch beside Kit. “I know.” She replied. “It’s just frustrating. I’m twenty-two, yet I feel… I don’t know… fifty? Eighty? I hate wearing out easily or that my body feels weighted down. What’s gonna happen if all my parts wear out?”
“Tails said he’d just have you down to a metal endoskeleton.” Kit said. “You’re still mostly organic.”
“That’s a relief, if it’s lighter material, that is.” Surge replied. She slumped in her seat. “Still, why us? What did we do to deserve getting kidnapped by that weirdo?”
Kit shrugged.
Surge’s phone rang.
Surge answered it without seeing who was calling. “Hello?”
“Babe, you didn’t have to go off on Tails like that.” Manic scolded. “I don’t even think he’s heard that word before.”
“I’m fifteen, Manic.” Tails said in the background. “Besides, I don’t live in a cave.”
“…Wow, you grew up fast.” Manic replied. “Anyway-”
“I’m sorry, I’m not mad at you, Tails.” Surge said. “Just the situation.”
“It’s okay, I can’t imagine how frustrated you are.” Tails replied.
“We ought to make Starline fix my parts.” Surge said. “Something needs to be done.”
“I agree, Babe.” Manic replied. “I-”
“Are you suffering from cyborganic related complications?” The tv announcer said. “Breezie can help.”
“Let me call you back.” Surge said.
“See you later, babe.” Manic replied. “Love ya.”
“Love ya too.” Surge said distractedly. She hung up.
“Call the number on your screen now.” The announcer continued. “It’s….”
“What are you doing, Surge?” Kit asked.
Surge dialed the number. “Calling them, maybe we can get paid for this.”
“You sure?” Kit asked. “I thought these ads were scams.”
“Hush, it’s ringing.” Surge replied. She got up and walked out of the room.
Kit sighed. “Why do I bother trying to help her?”
