Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Suing Starline ❯ The trial ( Chapter 3 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Surge and Kit met at Amy’s house before the trial.

“Okay, let’s go over some rules before I give you your clothes.” Amy said. “Let me do the talking. No smart aleck remarks out loud or under your breath. No outbursts no matter what Starline and his lawyers say or if the jury doesn’t decide in your favor. When you take the stand, answer the questions without being a smart aleck or losing your tempers. Are we clear?”

 “Yeah.” Surge replied.

 “Yes, Miss.” Kit said.

“Try to imitate Kit’s manners in the courtroom, Surge.” Amy said. “Okay, now let’s get you your clothes.”

Amy handed Kit a black button up, jeans, and tie along with a pair of simple black boots. “Wear these and leave your wristbands here.” She said, handing Surge a pile of clothes.

Surge looked at her outfit as Kit went to change clothes in Amy’s bathroom.

Surge’s outfit consisted of a simple black dress, heeled ankle boots, and tights along with a black blazer and cloth headband.

“You need to look dignified, not like you’re going to a metal concert.” Amy said. “Wear your spines down too.”

 “Right.” Surge muttered,

“Go change in my bedroom.” Amy said, motioning to the hallway.

 Surge headed to Amy’s bedroom.

*

Surge, in her new clothes, stepped out of Amy’s bedroom and met up with Amy, Kit, and Manic in the living room.

Manic stared wide eyed at Surge. “Wow, you look so pretty.”

“Settle down, Cute stuff.” Surge said, rolling her eyes.

 “Just saying.” Manic replied.

“Okay, is everyone ready to go?” Amy asked.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” Surge replied.

 Kit nodded in agreement.

Manic pulled a ring out of his pocket and tossed it into the air.

They all stepped through the ring portal.

*

Surge and Kit took their seats at the plaintiff’s table with Amy.

Manic sat behind Surge in the courtroom gallery.

 Surge glanced back at Manic.

“It’s gonna be okay, babe.” Manic whispered.

“Thanks, Cute stuff.” Surge whispered back.

 Surge glanced at the gallery.

Starline was sitting there without a lawyer.

“He had the same idea.” Surge thought. She noticed the robot judge and sighed. “No wonder these cases are hard to win.”

*

“So you see, my client deserves recompense for her pain and suffering.” Amy said. “I rest my case.”

 Amy sat down.

Surge slightly flinched as Amy sat down. “My mind wandered through the whole thing?” She thought. “That’s getting worse lately. Maybe I should’ve added that as our evidence.”

Surge glanced at the jury, who were wiping their eyes. “Okay, I have a chance of winning.” She thought.

Starline got up and cleared his throat. “Your honor, the case the plaintiffs have made is completely unfounded.” He said. “I never gave anyone cyborganics against their will.”

Amy looked at Surge and Kit, who were wide eyed.

Starline handed a couple of files to the judge. “The plaintiffs signed the documents.”

“Objection, your honor.” Amy said. “The defendant has a hypnotic glove he created that he most likely used to make his clients agree.”

“Do you have any proof?” The judge asked.

“I’m sure we can search their memories.” Amy replied.

Starline scoffed and shook his head.

 Surge and Kit exchanged glances.

Surge glanced back as Manic softly seethed.

*

Tails plugged his tablet into Surge’s usb port and projected the files onto a screen set up in the courtroom. He scrolled until he found the file, then played the video.

The video started with Starline holding his glove in front of Surge.

Everyone looked away, shaking their heads as Tails paused the feed and snapped them out of it.

 Tails replayed the video.

“Okay, tenrec, sign on the dotted line.” Starline said.

“…Yes… sir.” Surge muttered. She signed the papers in a barely coordinated way.

The courtroom collectively gasped while Starline slapped his hand over his face. “I thought I deleted that….” He muttered under his breath.

Tails unplugged Surge. “Okay, I’m ready to plug Kit in.”

“Objection, your honor.” Starline said. “Their tech expert is biased. He’s friends with their lawyer.”

 Amy sighed.

 Tails pinned his ears back.

“We’ll have a court appointed technician go through their memories.” The judge said as a drone flew in. “Proceed with the examination.”

The drone flew over to Surge and plugged itself into her usb port. It managed to find and play the same memory.

Once the drone finished scanning Surge’s memories, it repeated the process with Kit and found similar memories.

Amy passed a note to Kit and Surge as the judge got ready to send the jury out for deliberations.

“I think we won the case, but don’t get your hopes up.” The note read.

 Surge and Kit nodded.

*

Surge held Kit’s hand as they waited for the jury to come back in.

It had only been about fifteen minutes since they were sent back to deliberate, but it felt like five hours.

Finally, the jury came back in.

“Has the jury reached a verdict?” The judge asked.

“Yes, your honor.” A Mobian opossum said. “We find the defendant guilty.”

Kit hugged Surge as he happily yipped while Amy squealed.

Manic hugged Surge as best as he could.

Surge sat there in stunned shock. “We actually won?” She thought.

*

Manic held Surge’s hand as he walked with her, Kit, and Amy down the courthouse steps. “I knew you’d win, babe.” He said. “I’m so proud of you.”

“I was the lawyer.” Amy replied.

“Thanks, Ames.” Manic said. “I appreciate it.”

 “You’re welcome.” Amy replied.

“Okay, I’ll buy lunch to celebrate. My treat.” Manic said. “There’s a pizza place nearby.”

“Sounds good.” Amy replied. “Besides, we need to discuss what to do with your settlements.”

 “What?” Surge asked.

“Yeah, you don’t want to spend all your money in one fell swoop and wind up in debt.” Manic said, leading them to a nearby pizza place.

Surge rolled her eyes. “That doesn’t sound like fun.”

“What, you mean potentially losing everything over debt and living in a van down by the river?” Manic asked. “If you don’t lose the van, that is.”

“For real, he’s got a point.” Amy said, opening the door to the pizza place.

 Everyone walked inside the place.

“Fine, we’ll do it your way.” Surge replied.

“You’ll thank us later, babe.” Manic said, putting his arm around Surge’s shoulder.

 Surge half smiled.
