Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Brothers, then Enemies ❯ Runaway and Adoption ( Chapter 1 )
Sonic and Manic finished their chores at the orphanage they have called home since they were born.
“It’s not fair.” Sonic said. “The human kids never do any chores. We get worn out clothes and cold food.”
“I know.” Manic replied. “I hate it too.”
The brothers made it to their room.
Their little bed (which was just a worn out mattress on the floor) was soaking wet thanks to a leak in the roof directly over their beds.
Sonic looked at Manic. “We’re not staying here another day.”
“But where would we go, Sonic?” Manic asked.
“Anywhere but here.” Sonic replied.
“I dunno.” Manic said, shrugging. “We can’t take care of ourselves.”
Sonic scoffed. “Then stay here until you’re adopted or something.” He snapped. “I’m leaving tonight, after bedtime.”
Manic whimpered. “But-”
“It’s up to you, bro.” Sonic said. “I’m going with or without you.”
Manic nodded. “Alright, but I still think it’s a bad idea.”
Sonic huffed. “You’re such a chicken.”
Manic sighed. “I’m afraid we’ll be in a worse place than this.”
Sonic pointed to their bed. “How could anything be worse than this?”
“You got me there.” Manic replied.
That night, Sonic got up and nudged Manic’s shoulder.
Manic grunted, then sat up.
Sonic walked over to the window and opened it.
Manic got up and followed Sonic.
Sonic scurried out the window and ran off toward the woods.
Manic’s jaw dropped. “Wow, he’s fast.” He said under his breath.
Rosie, one of the caretakers, came in and picked up Manic. “What are you doing?”
Manic pointed out the window. “My bro ran away, Miss Rosie.”
Rosie sighed. “I’ll file a report, but you know how it is by now.” She said, picking up Manic. She carried Manic back to his little bed, tucked him in, then left the room.
Manic curled up, pulling his knees to his chest as he cried softly. “How could he leave me?”
Manic slowly got out of bed and shook out his messy spines. He looked over at Sonic’s empty bed and sighed. “I know you’ll be okay, bro.”
Rosie opened the door. “Manic, come along.” She said, smiling. “You’re being adopted.”
Manic grabbed his backpack, filled with all of his belongings, and raced out the door. “Maybe they’ll help me find Sonic.” He thought. He ran into the lobby where Rosie and an egg shaped man were.
“This is Dr. Gerald Robotnik.” Rosie said.
Manic smiled. “Hello.”
“Are you ready to go home, Manic?” Gerald asked. “Your new siblings are waiting for you.”
“Yeah.” Manic said, bouncing slightly.
Manic held onto the hem of Gerald’s coat as followed him into the kitchen of the little cottage.
A blonde girl turned off the sink and smiled as she turned to face Gerald and Manic.
Gerald nudged Manic forward. “Manic, this is Maria, your adopted sister.” He said. “Maria, this is Manic.”
Maria knelt down. “Hey, Manic, it’s so nice to meet you.”
Manic smiled back and hugged Maria. “Nice to meet you.”
Maria laughed. “Okay, I’m making lunch.” She replied. “Why don’t you meet our brother Shadow? I’ll call you when it’s ready.”
Manic let Maria go. “Okay.”
Gerald walked Manic to the living room.
A black and red hedgehog was sitting on the floor and reading a book.
“Go talk to Shadow, I’ll be back in a minute or two.” Gerald said. He left the room.
Manic sat down across from his new sibling. “Shadow?”
Shadow looked at Manic and huffed. He quietly read his book.
Manic rubbed the back of his head. “Uh… I’m Manic.” He said. He looked at the books next to Shadow’s feet, seeing a few history books in the stack. “So you like reading? Do you ever watch tv?”
“A little.” Shadow muttered. “Why? Do you want to watch Terminator?”
Manic’s eyes widened. “You’re allowed to watch it?” He asked. “The orphanage wouldn’t let me watch Animaniacs much.”
“What’s that?” Shadow asked.
Manic picked up the remote off of the coffee table. “Let’s see if it’s on.”
Gerald walked in. “Boys, it’s time for lunch and then we’ll test out Shadow’s air shoes at the park.”
“Air shoes?” Manic asked.
“You’ll see.” Gerald replied. “If you like them, I’ll make some for you.”
Manic grinned. “Okay.”
Gerald patted Manic on the head. “You and Shadow can go clean up and head to the kitchen.”
Shadow got up and headed to the kitchen.
“Can I ask you something?” Manic asked. “Can you help me find my big brother?”
“You have a brother?” Gerald asked.
Manic nodded. “Yeah, he’s blue with green eyes and he’s really fast.” He replied. He pulled a drawing he had done of Sonic out of his backpack. “See?”
Gerald took the picture and nodded. “We’ll get you a frame for this.” He said. “We’ll try to find him, okay?”
“Okay.” Manic replied.
