Yohji frowned, glancing down quickly at this watch. It was already ten o'clock… Omi should've cut the power by then. As if in apology to his thoughts, the young man's voice entered his earpiece.
"I've run into some… Erk! …trouble! It's nothing I can't handle, but you're going to have to finish with the lights still…Gah!" Yohji opened his mouth to reply, then paused. The transmission had been cut. He gritted his teeth, pushing back all thoughts concerning Omi's well-being. The boy didn't sound hurt, just…flustered.
"Stick with the mission," murmured Aya into his earpiece, sounding irritated. Oh yeah, the mission.
Their mission was to destroy some computer nerd that had hacked into Kritiker's system. From all available information, the man was working independently…he'd just sort of "stumbled" onto the mainframe. After pulling out some very valuable information (Weiss hadn't been told what it was), the man had placed an offer under Kritiker's noses. Their money for his silence. To say the least, Kritiker wasn't pleased. After they refused, the man had gone ballistic, claiming he'd be auctioning off the info at the next Microsoft convention.
Yohji scowled deeply, looking across the many heads present at this gathering. He was searching for a shrimpy-looking man with thick-rimmed glasses and a suit. After several hours of walking past over two-dozen of the type, Balinese was seriously considering just bringing down the building.
A flash of orange caught his eye. As if the night couldn't possibly have gotten worse…
"We have Schwarz…Schuldich is here…" Yohji whispered.
"What?! But…I thought they died in the water and building falling incident!" Ken yelled into his ear. Balinese winced, biting his tongue against the noise.
"Apparently not," he snapped, after the ringing in his ears had subsided. A few people looked over at him, blinking slightly at his outburst, then went back to what they were doing. Okay, so it wasn't uncommon to yell at yourself in a place like this…
"Just watch him for a while. Maybe he'll leave," Aya said, his voice unchanging.
Yeah right…
Yohji backed up against the wall, parallel to the telepath. The other man's arms were crossed, and his eyes were half-closed and unfocused.
How can he look so peaceful in a place like this?!
Yohji growled spitefully, scanning the crowd again. There was a corner on the far side of the room, and its only inhabitant was a short man in a suit. Balinese squinted, pulling out the picture of their target. He smiled with self-satisfaction. Yup, that was their nerd.
He moved off the wall and pushed past a few people, forgetting about the telepath in favor of the newest circumstance. When he was only a small distance away, Yohji stopped. The man looked strange, almost…lost within himself. Was that possible? His face darkened. That damn telepath must've had something do to with it.
The room was clearing out slowly, some new exhibit opening elsewhere. Balinese could see Schuldich semi-clearly through the diminishing mass of people. He turned back to his assigned target, waving a hand in front of the man's face.
"Helloooo… You alive in there?" He jumped slightly as the guy twitched…his first visible movement since Yohji first noticed him, "Hey, you OK?"
A piercing scream echoed through the room. Balinese clamped both hands to his ears, shutting his eyes tightly. The scream vibrated around inside of him, rattling around in his brain and seeming to repeat itself there. There was a thump as the man standing in front of him collapsed. Whatever had been allowing him to stand before was gone.
"Balinese…Balinese!? Are you OK in there? I thought I heard somebody-" Yohji pulled the small gadget from his ear, effectively cutting off Ken's ramblings. He didn't want to listen…couldn't hear…
