Witch Hunter Robin Fan Fiction ❯ Hymn Of A Broken Heart ❯ An Unforgivable Sin ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]
An Unforgivable Sin

She ran as far as she could--before giving up. It had been less than a year since it happened, since she
killed him. She was always on the run from fugitive hunters, escaping by only a thin margin in
some cases. She wore all black to help conceal herself in shadow--it also helped that her hair was black,
though her eyes were such a cold shade of blue, you could see them for miles. The very tips of her hair
were dyed a pale gray, with a slight outline of white. She wore a heavy black coat, her dressings beneath
completely shielded by it.

She ran as far as she could--before giving up...

The STN-J was awfully quiet lately--Michael at his computer, Doujima eyeing him harmlessly. Robin
was in the meeting room, scanning through the files to look over old cases. Her glasses were tucked
neatly in her pocket, though she was having a hard time seeing without them. Sakaki wandered around
aimlessly, randomly checking on Doujima every once in a while. Amon and Karasuma were gone,
finishing off a case started at the beginning of the week.

“ Well would you look at this...” Michael said, a hint of excitement in his voice. Doujima leaned forward
in her chair, and Sakaki hovered over Michael’s shoulder, wondering what he had found.

“ She’s pretty...” Sakaki laughed--referring to the girl on the screen. “ Who is she?”

“ Koe Mayuki--wanted for murdering her boyfriend less than a year ago. It seems the cops just gave up on
looking for her, so they just recently shut the case...”

“ Huh--killing her boyfriend, huh? Guess he wasn’t enough to please her.” Doujima cracked.

“ That’s not it at all--the file says she claimed sexual abuse and assault when she confessed to the
crime...”

“ Well if she confessed--then why was she running?” Sakaki wondered, scratching his head in confusion.

“ Beats me--but the file says her boyfriend died of severe internal hemorrhages, seemingly caused by
beating--yet there were no bruises on his body at all...”

“ That’s a little weird, doncha think?” Doujima stated, looking over to Michael.

“ Do you think she’s a---” Sakaki began.

“ A witch.” Michael cheered, applauding himself for figuring it out. Sakaki gave a frustrated grunt,
hearing Doujima laugh quietly--after Michael took credit for what he was about to say. He hated looking
stupid in front of Doujima, because she always laughed. He was deeply embarassed--more deeply than
anyone could imagine. Again his eyes scanned over that picture of Koe, noting that sad look on her face.
He wondered, did she always look that sad? Then he closed his question, deciding he didn’t really care.
She was a murderer, and he had no respect for someone like that.

“ So--do you want us to find her then?” Sakaki suggested, tugging at his orbos necklace. Michael picked
up a donut from the box to his right, and quickly devoured it as he struck the keyboard.

“ Well--it says she recently rented a storehouse, under-the-table...” Michael murmured. “ I guess you
could check there...”

“ Shouldn’t you wait for Amon and Karasuma to come back? Or are you in that much of a rush to
meet a pretty girl, Sakaki?” Doujima murmured, her eyes narrowing as they fell upon him. He gave a
rather gruff sigh, and looked to Robin--who recently left the meeting room.

“ I don’t need Amon or Karasuma to help me--I’ll bring Robin along.”

“ Amon’s not going to be too happy about that--she is his partner afterall...” Doujima sighed,
twirling her hair along her index finger.

“ I don’t care what Amon thinks--that Koe Mayuki is a murdering witch, and we need to catch her.”

“ Since when have you ever been so--determined?” Doujima questioned, rather suspiscious of Sakaki’s
intentions. Sakaki ignored the question, and walked along--giving Robin a hand gesture, which led her to
follow.

“ Huh--what a jerk...” Doujima grumbled.

“ I thought you liked Sakaki?” Michael laughed, typing away on his keyboard again.

“ I do--it’s just, he can be such a pain...”

.....

Koe sat in the dark storehouse--crying. She had no reason to live, and she was trying to kill herself.
However, it wasn’t working. She didn’t want to be here--life meant nothing to her. She dropped the
bloody knife, and soon felt the presence of others. Her eyes lifted, stale blue--with a black outline. She
watched as the large door to the storehouse lifted, and standing there was Sakaki with Robin at his side...

....Back At The STN-J...

“ Doujima--Michael, where are Haruto and Robin?” Amon questioned, bluntly. Karasuma stood next to
him, her eyes drifting across the room.

“ They went to go re-open a closed police case down at the docks...” Michael muttered, anxiously typing
away.

“ The storehouse district?” Karasuma assumed. Amon growled slightly under his breath, turning to
Karasuma.

“ The rookie can’t handle himself--let’s go...”

.....

“ So--you’re Koe Mayuki, then..” Sakaki stated, slowly retrieving his gun. Koe looked up, her tear
stained face completely catching him off guard. Her skin was pale, her black hair causing her face to
stand out more. The one truly magnificent feature about her, were her eyes. They were ice-blue, dramatic
and filled with pain. She held out both wrists to the witch hunters, letting their eyes fall upon her torn
skin.

“ I tried to die--death will not yet have me.”

Sakaki’s eyes began to tremble as he aimed the barrel of the gun at her--he wasn’t so sure he had the heart
to hurt her. She sat there, so delicate and yet so tormented. Robin placed her glasses neatly upon the
bridge of her nose, and looked at him--watching sweat trickle down his temples.

“ Haruto--why do you hesitate?” Robin asked, quietly. His trigger finger was shaky--he couldn’t believe
how hard it was just to aim.

“ Before I am taken--I did not kill him out of my own will...”

“ I suppose you expect us to believe that?” Amon called--walking up from behind Sakaki. Sakaki turned
slightly, his teeth clenched tighter now. He wanted this to be his case--he wanted to end one for
once. It was always Amon or Robin who closed cases, and for once--he wished he could have that
spotlight.

As Amon slowly began to pick at Koe’s pain, Sakaki could sense something strange about her. He could
sense her inability to control her own powers--just by looking at her eyes. She jumped down from the
large crate she sat upon, her black trench coat gently swirling around her. Her black hair flirted with a
gentle breeze, her eyes settled upon the witch hunters.

“ You can take me in.”

“ Thanks for your consent--but we would even without it.” Amon growled, pointing the barrel of his gun
at Koe. She gave a brief nod to Sakaki, which he didn’t quite understand. Maybe it was hesitance to
capture her? He was unsure...

.....

Koe had been locked up, seated in a small cell--her eyes wandering across it. The walls were painted with
graffiti, and there was blood spatter across the floor. She was unsure of what they would do to her, but she
didn’t care. If it was death, she would applaud them. She knew she wouldn’t be given her freedom, so
she didn’t worry about rejecting it. She smiled vaguely as a door opened, and gently closed. Her eyes
turned to the side--expecting to see Amon.

Luckily for her, it was Sakaki. Remorse filled his eyes as he looked to her. She became a little annoyed
with him, her eyes reflecting it clearly.

“ What brings you down here?” She grumbled, tapping her fingers against the concrete wall. Sakaki
shook a chain, with the key to her cell attached to it. Her eyes widened--her lips parting slightly as he
worked the key into the cell door. “ Why are you freeing me?”

“ I’m not really sure--but my conscience says I should.”

“ Hm. You follow your conscience--I’ve never met anyone who did.”

“ Huh?” Sakaki was caught off guard, slowly opening to cell door--letting Koe approach him warily.

“ Most people, block what it says. I just happen to be one of those people. I don’t force myself to listen to
the inner-workings of my mind, I do what I feel like. A conscience is a worthless attribute of any
creature.” She flipped her black hair back, smiling tenderly at Sakaki.

“ You believe what you want to--and I’ll stick with what I believe in, okay?” He responded, rather
harshly. Koe gave a shrug, and as she was walking away--she felt him tug on her shoulder. “ Where will
you go?”

“ Wherever I feel like.” She muttered, winking at him. She swiftly walked from the room, leaving him
with thoughts of her. She had a strong sense of denial in herself--self-doubt. She didn’t believe in a
conscience, and she only helped herself--that was obvious. Somehow, he found her way of dealing with
things reasonable. He looked down at his watch, catching a brief glimpse of the time under the shadow of
the moon...

“ Damn--I need to take Doujima home!” He quickly dropped the keys, forgetting all about them. He ran
furiously, wanting to keep his promise to her...
